US Citizens & Permanent Residents Only — No Temporary Visas. Both the DMD and AEGD programs are restricted to US citizens and permanent residents. UF does not accept applicants on temporary visas (F-1, J-1,

H-1B, etc.) for either international pathway. If you hold a temporary visa, UF is not an option regardless of your qualifications. This is a hard institutional policy, not a preference. Two Separate Applications Required. The DMD and AEGD programs use completely different application systems. The DMD requires a CAAPID application (deadline October 1). The AEGD requires an ADEA PASS application (also deadline October 1). You can apply to both simultaneously, but each requires its own complete application package, fees, and supporting documents. There is no combined application. Two Programs, Two Pathways: DMD vs. AEGD Understanding the Fundamental Difference Before diving into interview prep, you need to understand what each program actually is — because they lead to fundamentally different outcomes. The DMD program is a degree-granting program: you complete the full 4-year DMD curriculum alongside domestic students and graduate with a

DMD degree that qualifies you for licensure in any US state. The AEGD program is a certificate program: you complete a 2-year advanced education in general dentistry and receive a certificate that qualifies you for Florida board eligibility only. This distinction matters enormously for your career planning. If you want to practice in New York, California, or Texas after graduation, the AEGD certificate won't help — you need the DMD. If you're committed to practicing in Florida and want a shorter, more clinically focused pathway, the AEGD may be the better strategic choice. Strategic Choice Framework Choose the DMD if: you want nationwide licensure flexibility, you're willing to invest 4 years, you have a competitive DAT score, you want to integrate fully with domestic students, and you're comfortable with the extreme selectivity (2 seats). Choose the AEGD if: you're committed to practicing in Florida, you want a shorter pathway (2

years), you prefer a clinically intensive program, you want a larger class (12 seats), and you're willing to accept that the certificate limits you to Florida board eligibility. Apply to Both. If you're uncertain which pathway is right for you, apply to both. The application deadlines are the same (October 1) and the programs evaluate independently. Being rejected from one doesn't affect your candidacy for the other. Many successful applicants apply to both and make their final decision based on which program accepts them. 4-Year DMD Program: The Full Degree Pathway Program Overview UF's 4-year DMD program for international dentists is integrated with the domestic DMD curriculum. You enter as a first-year student and complete the identical coursework, clinical rotations, and requirements as domestic students. The class size for international students is extremely small — only 2 seats per year — making this one of the most selective

international dental programs in the country. Only 2 Seats Per Year. The DMD program accepts only 2 international dentists per year. This extreme selectivity means your application must be exceptional in every dimension. There is no margin for weakness in any component — DAT score, academic record, clinical experience, letters, and interview performance all must be strong. DAT Requirement — Unique Among CAAPID Programs UF is the only CAAPID program that requires the DAT (Dental Admission Test). The INBDE does not waive or substitute for the DAT requirement. You must take the DAT even if you've already passed the INBDE. This is a significant additional preparation burden that most international dentists don't face at other programs. The DAT tests perceptual ability, reading comprehension, quantitative reasoning, and natural sciences (biology, general chemistry, organic chemistry). International dentists often find the natural sciences

section most challenging because it covers foundational undergraduate content that may have been taught differently in their home country's dental curriculum. DAT Required — INBDE Does NOT Waive It. You must take the DAT to apply to UF's DMD program. Having passed the INBDE does not exempt you from the DAT requirement. Plan for 2–3 months of dedicated DAT preparation in addition to your other application requirements. A competitive DAT score is essential given the 2-seat class size. Florida Residency Priority As a public university, UF gives priority to Florida residents for the DMD program. If you're a US citizen or permanent resident living in Florida, this is a meaningful advantage. If you're applying from out of state, you're competing for seats with an additional structural disadvantage beyond the already extreme selectivity. DMD Interview Process The DMD interview takes place in person at the Gainesville campus, typically between

January and spring. After your CAAPID application is reviewed, selected candidates receive an invitation for an on-campus interview day. You'll also need to complete a supplemental application ($30 fee) specific to UF. The interview day includes a campus tour, faculty interviews, and opportunities to meet current students. Bring all original documents — dental degree, transcripts, TOEFL scores, credential evaluation, and any licensure documentation. UF may verify documents in person during the interview visit. 2-Year AEGD Program: The Florida Certificate Pathway Program Overview The AEGD (Advanced Education in General Dentistry) program operates from UF's Hialeah campus — not the main Gainesville campus. This is a 2-year clinically intensive program that accepts 12 international dentists per year. Graduates receive a certificate (not a degree) that qualifies them for Florida dental board eligibility. Only. The AEGD certificate qualifies you for Florida board eligibility only. It does not grant licensure eligibility in other states. If you plan to practice outside Florida at any point in your career, the AEGD certificate alone will not be sufficient. Understand this limitation before applying. $1,200 Admissions Workshop with Bench Test The AEGD uses an "Admissions Workshop" format instead of a traditional interview. This workshop includes a bench test component and costs $1,200 — the highest admissions-stage fee of any program in our guide. The workshop takes place in October or November at the Hialeah campus. The $1,200 fee is non-refundable and must be paid regardless of the admissions outcome.
