Stony Brook Dental School Interview: DDS 2026-27

Stony Brook DDS guide from its own pages: a Kira assessment before interview selection, the Oct 1 deadline, preferred GPA and DAT, and class data.

Stony Brook invites applicants who have sent all their materials, paid its fees and met its preferred criteria to an online Kira Talent Assessment, which it uses with AADSAS to choose whom to interview. Here is what Stony Brook publishes, what applicants report, and how to prepare. return ( <> Stony Brook DDS Requirements and Class Profile Stony Brook University School of Dental Medicine, on Long Island in New York, dates its inception to 1968. It calls itself "distinctive for its small class size (~46), rigorous integrated biomedical education with the School of Medicine (SOM), extensive clinical experiences, and outreach programs," and its DDS is a four-year program. You apply through AADSAS by October 1, which has passed for 2026–27, and pay a $100 supplemental fee. Stony Brook's DDS FAQ sends you to the "SDM Admissions Fact Book" for admissions statistics. That link is broken, but Stony Brook University's institutional research

office, "the repository for official university statistics," publishes the dental school's figures for every class since the one that entered in fall 2012. This is what it reports for the class that started in fall 2026: Figure. Class of 2030 (entered fall 2026). Applicants. 1,401. Offers made. 102 (the fact book calls this 7.2 percent of applicants). Enrolled. 46. GPA. 3.85 total, 3.81 science. Average DAT. Academic Average 23.5, Perceptual Ability 21.5, Total Science 23.2 (old 1–30 scale). Enrollment profile. 93.5 percent New York State, 2 percent out of state (U.S.), 4.5 percent international. Which DAT scale are 23.5, 21.5 and 23.2 on?. The old 1–30 scale: no score on the 200–600 scale the DAT has used since 1 March 2025 can be 23.5. The fact book doesn't label the scale or say how it averaged scores from the new test, and we don't convert any. Of the Stony Brook pages we read, only its admissions page pairs the two scales: its

"Year 1 Class Academic Average" lists DAT AA 469/22.9, DAT PAT 450/21 and DAT TS 468/22.8, with a 3.85 total and 3.82 science GPA. It doesn't say which class that is; those GPAs and the 22.9 match the fact book's figures for the class that entered in fall 2025. Two older pages give other figures: the DDS FAQ's "In 2025" averages (the same two GPAs with their labels reversed, and DAT scores of 23, 23 and 22 on the old scale) and the Student Information page's "In 2024" ones (a DAT of 21.7, on the old scale, and a GPA of 3.8). Stony Brook's admissions page heads its GPA and DAT standards "Meet the preferred GPA and DAT Requirements" and says "Preference will be given to those that meet the following standards": GPA: a total GPA of 3.0 and a science GPA of 3.0. DAT: 17 in the Academic Average (AA), Perceptual Ability (PAT) and Total Science (TS), on the old 1–30 scale. Stony Brook gives no 200–600 equivalent and doesn't say how it applies

17 to a new-scale score. Only a DAT "obtained after June 1, 2021" counts this cycle, so yours may be on either scale; if it is on the new one, ask sdm_admissions@stonybrookmedicine.edu. Why they matter: Stony Brook's Kira invitations go to applicants who have submitted all their application materials, paid its fees and "have met the preferred criteria" (see the Kira section below). The page doesn't define that phrase; these are the standards it calls preferred. In state or out of state? Stony Brook's DDS admissions pages state no residency preference, and its FAQ says it accepts applications from international students. Most of each class is from New York, though: the fact book's enrollment profile puts 93.5 percent of the class that entered in fall 2026 in its "New York State" row, and between 82 and 93.5 percent of each class that entered from fall 2022 to fall 2026. Residency also sets tuition. Stony Brook's 2026–2027 DDS cost of

attendance lists first-year tuition of $39,130 for New York State residents and $70,840 for non-residents, and a total estimated first-year cost, including books, housing and other indirect costs, of $96,989 and $128,699. "All rates are subject to change," and these are this year's, not the rates for the class that starts in 2027. Applicants with international university or college transcripts must have them evaluated by World Education Services (WES) or Educational Credential Evaluators (ECE) and submit the evaluation with AADSAS, and applicants who aren't native or primary speakers of English must present a minimum TOEFL or IELTS score. The FAQ sends you to the admissions page for that score, which the admissions page doesn't give. Prerequisite coursework Stony Brook's admissions page says its requirements "require completion of specific courses prior to application": Course. What Stony Brook asks for. Biology. 2 semesters with labs

(8 credits). General chemistry. 2 semesters with labs (8 credits). Organic chemistry. 2 semesters with labs (8 credits). Physics. 2 semesters with labs (8 credits); non-calculus-based physics is accepted. English. 2 semesters, writing intensive (6 credits). Biochemistry. 1 semester (3 credits); no lab required. Math. Calculus I and Calculus II, or Calculus I and Statistics (6 credits); pre-calculus doesn't replace Calculus I. All of them before you apply. Stony Brook's FAQ, still written for the 2025–26 cycle, made an exception that year: candidates who applied by December 1, 2025, completed the required prerequisites and submitted a letter grade by January 2026 "may be considered for an interview during January and February 2026." No Stony Brook page offers that exception for 2026–27, so plan to have every prerequisite finished when you apply. Three years of college: "Applicants are required to have completed three years of college

before matriculation (90 credits); however, it is highly desirable that applicants possess a baccalaureate degree." Combined chemistry: a three-semester combined general and organic chemistry sequence with labs "will be considered"; ask the Director of Admissions whether yours meets the requirement. AP, IB and community college: AP credit needs a score of 4 or above, and when it replaces a prerequisite, "an additional course of an equal level or better should be taken." IB scores aren't accepted for prerequisites. Stony Brook prefers prerequisites taken at a four-year college, and "a maximum of 60 credit hours taken at a community college prior to your third year of study toward a baccalaureate degree may be accepted." Online and pass/fail courses: non-prerequisite online courses, "while not preferred, will be considered." If your school made system-wide grading changes, Stony Brook will consider pass/fail grades and online courses for

Spring 2020 to Summer 2021. Recommended: "It is strongly recommended that applicants also take classes in the social sciences and statistics, and upper-level sciences such as anatomy and physiology." The DAT: mandatory. "Only a current DAT score obtained after June 1, 2021 will be accepted for the 2026-2027 admissions cycle," and Canadian DAT scores aren't accepted. The FAQ asks you to submit your DAT with your application or, if that isn't possible, a copy of your unofficial results "within a reasonable amount of time," and says Stony Brook does not "Hold" applications while you retake the test. Dental experience: "Dental assisting and/or shadowing – minimum 50 hours." Technical standards and a background check: the technical standards in Stony Brook's student handbook say "Any person wishing to apply to the SDM must be able to possess the motor skills, intellectual skills, observational and communication skills, social and behavioral

skills, and the ability to quantitate and integrate all of the preceding in order to attain the degree." If you are offered admission, you must complete a background check at your own expense as a condition of matriculation, and start it within 15 days of receiving notice of the policy. A committee letter: encouraged or required? Stony Brook's pages disagree. The admissions page says "A pre-health committee letter or letter packet is encouraged. However, if your college or university does not provide a committee letter/packet, three recommendation letters will be considered," and recommends "science professors, research mentors, advisors, and employers" as writers. The DDS FAQ says "A pre-professional advisory letter is required," that without one "three recommendation letters from science faculty members will be accepted," and that if your college offers a committee letter, "three science faculty letters cannot be substituted." Go by

the stricter reading: send your college's committee letter if it offers one, and otherwise three letters from science faculty. Confirm with sdm_admissions@stonybrookmedicine.edu. To confirm a rule, email sdm_admissions@stonybrookmedicine.edu; the admissions page also gives the Office of Education's number, (631) 632-8871. Kira: Part of How Stony Brook Chooses Whom to Interview Stony Brook's admissions page says "Applicants who have submitted all application materials, paid required fees, and have met the preferred criteria will be invited to complete an online Kira Talent Assessment. The Kira assessment allows the applicant to provide additional information used in evaluating a potential match with our rigorous and innovative educational program. The Admissions Committee uses the Kira Talent Assessment in conjunction with the ADEA AADSAS application to select applicants for an interview." Its one-page admissions overview sets out the

order: Step. What Stony Brook says. 1. Submit application. All candidates apply through AADSAS. The deadline is October 1, and acceptances are rolling, so “applicants are urged to apply as early as possible”. 2. Pay all application fees. A $100 non-refundable supplemental application fee, paid online with your AADSAS ID. Applications aren't reviewed until your verified AADSAS application, all supporting documents and the fee have been received. 3. Kira assessment. An invitation to the online Kira Talent Assessment, for applicants who “have submitted all application materials, paid required fees, and have met the preferred criteria”. 4. Interview invitation. Interviews are “an integral part of the admissions process,” and “all applicants under serious consideration will be notified if an interview is indicated”. 5. Admissions decision. By the Admissions Committee, on a rolling basis from December, by email. Stony Brook doesn't publish

the Kira format: whether you record video, type answers or both, how many questions there are, how long you get, or how long you have to finish it. No applicant in the forum's 2025–26 Stony Brook thread described it. Our list of dental schools that use Kira explains how the platform works; your invitation is the authority on Stony Brook's version. What Kira is for at Stony Brook. Stony Brook says Kira lets you "provide additional information used in evaluating a potential match with our rigorous and innovative educational program," so know the program before you start: a small class, first-year courses shared with medical students, clinical training from the latter part of the first year and a fourth year run like a general practice (see What Stony Brook Looks For). Practice short, specific answers out loud, and if your invitation asks for video, test your camera, light and sound in the spot where you will record. CASPer or anything

else?. Stony Brook's DDS admissions page, its admissions overview, its DDS FAQ and the DDS pages of its Fall 2026 catalog don't mention CASPer, Acuity Insights or any assessment besides Kira. The Stony Brook Interview: What the School Says By invitation, after Kira. "Interviews are an integral part of the admissions process, and all applicants under serious consideration will be notified if an interview is indicated." The Admissions Committee uses Kira with your AADSAS application "to select applicants for an interview." What it counts for. Stony Brook's Fall 2026 catalog says "Selection is based on an overall appraisal of the applicant's suitability for a career in dentistry," that applicants "should demonstrate academic achievement, competence in the sciences and a general interest in the profession of dentistry," and that "These factors, as well as performance on the DAT, letters of recommendation and the personal interview, are

considered in the admissions process." What admissions assesses. The technical standards in Stony Brook's student handbook say "Compassion, integrity, concern for others, interpersonal skills, interests, and motivation are all personal qualities that will be assessed during the admissions and educational processes." When. Stony Brook's admissions pages give no interview dates for 2026–27. Its FAQ, still written for 2025–26, said candidates who finished their prerequisites late "may be considered for an interview during January and February 2026." Its 2026–27 calendar of school events lists interview days for its residency programs, not for the DDS. What Stony Brook doesn't publish. Whether the interview is in person or virtual, how many people interview you and who they are, how long it lasts, whether your interviewers have read your application, what is asked, and this cycle's dates. The forum's invite tracker (compiled by a volunteer

from applicants' reports) lists Stony Brook's interviews as in person in both recent cycles (below). Go by your invitation, and email sdm_admissions@stonybrookmedicine.edu if something is unclear. Reread your whole AADSAS application before the day. What applicants report These come from a public applicant forum and the invite tracker that a forum volunteer compiles there from applicants' reports, not from Stony Brook: This cycle (2026–27): the tracker, last updated 25 September 2026, lists Stony Brook's first invitations on 25 August and a first interview date of 4 September, in person. As of 6 October 2026, the forum's Stony Brook thread for this cycle held only its opening post, and no invitation had been reported there. Last cycle (2025–26): the tracker, last updated 22 October 2025, listed first invitations on 25 August 2025 and a first interview date of 8 September 2025, in person. On 21 September 2025, one applicant asked in the

forum's Stony Brook thread about "the writing sample in the interview": whether it was "just a random prompt" with "a timeframe to respond," and whether it was handwritten or done on a "laptop/device." No one answered in the thread, and Stony Brook's pages don't mention a writing sample. On 15 December 2025, two applicants posted that they had been accepted, and both said they were told by phone call; one said they were in state. Stony Brook's admissions page says "All committee decisions are sent via email." No post in the thread describes the interview itself: in person or virtual, how many interviewers, how long, or what was asked. None mentions an MMI or the Kira assessment. Practice Your Stony Brook Answers Out Loud. Applications opened: its admissions page says “beginning June 4 of the year prior to matriculation,” and the table on the same page says June 1. Once you have your AADSAS ID. Pay the $100 non-refundable supplemental application fee online; “You must use your AADSAS ID# to submit payment”. October 1, 2026. AADSAS deadline (passed). When your verified AADSAS application, supporting documents and fee are in. Review can begin; applicants who have also met the preferred criteria are invited to the Kira assessment. After Kira. Applicants under serious consideration “will be notified if an interview is indicated”; no 2026–27 interview dates published. December 2026. Rolling acceptances begin, sent by email; Stony Brook's pages give December 1, 13 and 15

(see below). 30 days, 15 days or at once. Your time to respond to an offer made December 1 to January 31, February 1 to May 15, or after May 15 (“may be asked for an immediate response”). When you accept. Pay the $1,250 tuition deposit on SOLAR and email your acceptance statement; seats are filled “on a rolling basis”. Within 15 days of notice. Start the background check that applicants offered admission must complete, at their own expense. April 1 (2027 for this class, if unchanged). Priority FAFSA deadline for new students; the Fall 2026 catalog says “April 1st” and gives no year. May 28, 2027. Welcome Day for the Class of 2031 (its 2026–27 events calendar). August 2, 2027. First day of the 2027–28 academic year for D1 students. December 1, 13 or 15?. Stony Brook's admissions page says students are accepted on a rolling basis "starting on December 13th of the academic year prior to matriculation," the table on the same page lists

"Acceptance Notification" from December 15, and its one-page admissions overview says "December 1st." Its response rule counts from December 1 ("30 days if accepted between 12/1 and 1/31"), so be ready from December 1. In the forum's 2025–26 thread, two applicants posted acceptances on 15 December 2025. An offer isn't a seat until you confirm it. "The offer of admission does not guarantee enrollment as a limited number of seats are available. Seats will be filled on a rolling basis upon confirmation of your completed acceptance statement and proof of tuition deposit." After you pay the $1,250 deposit on SOLAR and email your acceptance statement, Stony Brook emails you that your enrollment is confirmed or that "The class is full," in which case "An option to be added to the wait list may be offered if available." Its deposit refund page still shows the 2024–25 cycle's date, April 1, 2025, and "In general, deferrals of tuition deposits

are not granted." If you are accepted and want the seat, don't wait for your deadline. What Stony Brook Looks For Stony Brook's Fall 2026 catalog says it "selects highly qualified students who are representative of a variety of backgrounds, experiences, and interests," on "an overall appraisal of the applicant's suitability for a career in dentistry." Its technical standards name the personal qualities "that will be assessed during the admissions and educational processes." With its honor code, they make the best checklist for Kira and the interview: Compassion and concern for others: the qualities the standards name are "Compassion, integrity, concern for others, interpersonal skills, interests, and motivation." Have one specific story in which you saw what someone needed and acted on it. Communicating with patients: students must be able to "communicate effectively and sensitively with patients" and to "communicate in lay language so

that patients and their families can understand the patient's conditions." Practice explaining something technical in plain words. Calming anxious patients: students must be able to "manage apprehensive patients with a range of moods and behaviors in a tactful, congenial, personal manner so as not to alienate or antagonize them." Taking criticism: students must be able to "accept criticism and respond by appropriate modification of behavior." Have an example of feedback you acted on. The patient first: "A student must always act in the best interest of the patient and society even when there is a conflict with the student's personal self-interest." Stress and uncertainty: students must be able to "function effectively under stress" and to "display flexibility, and learn to function in the face of uncertainties inherent in the clinical problems of patients." Integrity with your peers: Stony Brook's honor code, approved in August 2024,

says that if a peer's conduct may violate it, "that individual must be privately confronted," and "Failure to do so is itself a violation of this Honor Code." A member of its Honor Court can come along as an impartial mediator. Science and hand skills: "Success in dental school is highly correlated with a student's competence in science." Students must also be able to "use high-speed or low-speed dental handpieces for tooth preparation procedures" and "comprehend three dimensional relationships." Be ready to describe something you have done with your hands that took precision. The best Why Stony Brook material is in its clinic and its classroom. Dental and medical students at Stony Brook take the same courses in anatomy, biochemistry, microbiology, pathology, pharmacology and physiology, and in the first year dental students participate in the School of Medicine's LEARN curriculum. Clinical training begins in the latter part of the

first year, and its catalog says the school "consistently ranks among the top dental schools in the nation for the amount of supervised clinic experience per student." Its Dental Care Center calls itself the largest provider of primary oral health care services in Suffolk County and "the safety net for the underserved, the pediatric and geriatric populations," patients with systemic conditions and those with special needs. In the fourth year, students run their practices in cubicles equipped as private general dental offices, caring for a panel of patients, and can spend up to 120 hours on selectives. Its outreach programs, which its pages list in South Dakota, Chile and Madagascar among other places, are open to third-year students, and to fourth-year students who didn't have the chance in their third year; students apply and are selected. Accepted students can apply for a summer research fellowship before they start, and the school

lists combined DDS/MPH, DDS/MBA, DDS/MS in Material Science Engineering and DDS/PhD programs. Connect one of these to how you want to learn and whom you want to serve. Internationally trained dentist? Stony Brook says it "is not considering applications for an advanced standing program at this time." Compare the programs that do in our CAAPID program finder . Stony Brook does not publish its interview questions; these are practice questions built on what it says it weighs. Its pages don t say whether your interviewers will have read your application so build a 90-second answer that works either who you are the experiences that led you to dentistry and why Stony Brook is the next step. Why dentistry? Stony Brook s catalog says applicants should demonstrate “a general interest in the profession of dentistry ” and its technical standards list “interests and motivation” among the qualities assessed in admissions. Anchor your answer in something specific you saw or did during

your dental assisting or shadowing hours then say what it confirmed for you. Why Stony Brook? Use what Stony Brook says about a class of about 46 first-year courses taken with medical students clinical training from the latter part of the first year a Dental Care Center that calls itself “the safety net for the underserved ” and a fourth year in which students conduct their practices in cubicles equipped as private general dental offices supervised by faculty general dentists. Connect one of these to how you want to learn or whom you want to serve; the Long Island location alone is not a reason. What did you learn from your dental assisting or shadowing? Stony Brook asks for a minimum of 50 hours of “Dental assisting and/or shadowing.” Name one moment you saw a dentist handle a patient well and what it taught you about the profession. Behavioral Tell me about a time you received criticism. What did you do with it? Stony Brook s

technical standards say “A student must be able to accept criticism and respond by appropriate modification of behavior.” Show that you listened changed something specific and what improved as a result. Describe a time you had to work under pressure or with uncertainty. Stony Brook s standards ask students to “function effectively under stress” and to “display flexibility and learn to function in the face of uncertainties inherent in the clinical problems of patients.” Pick a real situation say what you prioritized and why and what you would do differently. Tell me about a time you showed compassion for someone. Stony Brook names “Compassion integrity concern for others interpersonal skills interests and motivation” as “personal qualities that will be assessed during the admissions and educational processes.” Choose a specific moment describe what the other person needed and what you did and let the action show the compassion. What do

you do outside of school? Interests are on Stony Brook s list of qualities assessed in admissions and its catalog says it selects students “representative of a variety of backgrounds experiences and interests.” Pick one interest and talk about it in real what you do how long you have done it and what it has given you. Ethical / Scenario You see a classmate cheating on an exam. What do you do? Stony Brook s honor code says that if a peer s conduct may violate it “that individual must be privately confronted ” and “Failure to do so is itself a violation of this Honor Code”; a member of its Honor Court can come along as an impartial mediator. Show that you would speak to your classmate privately first then use the proper channel and say why integrity matters when patients trust you. A patient is anxious and upset before treatment. How do you handle it? Stony Brook s technical standards ask students to “manage apprehensive patients with a

range of moods and behaviors in a tactful congenial personal manner so as not to alienate or antagonize them.” Acknowledge the fear explain each step in plain words agree on a signal to pause and involve your supervising dentist if the patient wants to stop. What would you do if what s convenient for you conflicts with what s best for your patient? Stony Brook s standards say “A student must always act in the best interest of the patient and society even when there is a conflict with the student s personal self-interest.” Use a concrete case such as a schedule or a requirement you need to meet put the patient s care first talk it through with your supervising faculty and be honest with the patient about the options. A patient needs treatment they cannot afford. What do you do? Stony Brook says its Dental Care Center s modest fees and participation in dental insurance programs have made it “the safety net for the underserved.”

Acknowledge the patient without judgment explore legitimate options such as phased treatment and never lower the standard of care. Show your reasoning; a question like this rarely has a single right answer. Pay the $100 fee as soon as you have your AADSAS ID Stony Brook says “Applications will not be reviewed until your verified AADSAS application all supporting documents and the supplemental application fee have been received ” and its Kira invitations go to applicants who have “submitted all application materials paid required fees and have met the preferred criteria.” Acceptances are rolling so don t let a missing fee or document hold your file back. Prepare for Kira before the invitation arrives Stony Brook s Admissions Committee uses Kira “in conjunction with the ADEA AADSAS application to select applicants for an interview ” and Stony Brook doesn t publish its format. Practice short specific spoken answers about why dentistry and

why Stony Brook and if your invitation asks for video test your camera light and sound first. Send the letters Stony Brook asks for Its pages the admissions page says a pre-health committee letter “is encouraged ” while the FAQ says “A pre-professional advisory letter is required” and that if your college offers one “three science faculty letters cannot be substituted.” Send your college s committee letter if it has one otherwise three letters from science faculty and confirm with sdm_admissions@stonybrookmedicine.edu. If you are accepted confirm quickly “The offer of admission does not guarantee enrollment as a limited number of seats are available.” Seats are filled on a rolling basis as completed acceptance statements and $1 250 tuition deposits come in so respond well before your 30 days for offers made December 1 to January 31 and 15 days for offers made February 1 to May 15.
