Boston University Dental School Interview: DMD 2026-27

BU Goldman DMD guide from BU's own pages: the structured Zoom interview (September–March), typical GPA and DAT (420 new scale, 20 old), and how to prepare.

BU interviews on Zoom, with a member of its admissions committee, using structured, calibrated interviews and a standardized scoring rubric. Here is what BU publishes, what applicants report, and how to prepare. return ( <> BU Goldman DMD Requirements and Class Profile Boston University's Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine (GSDM) enrolls about 117 students a year in its four-year DMD program, through AADSAS. It uses a holistic review, and it publishes what successful applicants typically have. Metric. BU's published figure. Note. Science GPA. Above 3.4. What successful applicants typically have. DAT Academic Average. 420 or higher. New 200–600 scale; BU gives 20 or higher on the old 1–30 scale. Class size. 117 seats. In the DMD entering class. Application deadline. December 15, 2026. Through AADSAS; BU urges applying as early as possible. GSDM application fee. $80. ADEA Fee Assistance Program participants may request a waiver.

Residency. No bearing on eligibility. BU is a private institution. Dental experience. No set number of hours. In-person experience with a general dentist expected. Which DAT scale is BU's 420 on?. The new one. Since 1 March 2025 the DAT has been scored from 200 to 600, and BU gives both figures: an Academic Average of 420 or higher, or 20 or higher on the old 1–30 scale. BU calls these typical of successful applicants, and says all aspects of an application are considered. BU's pages disagree on how old your DAT can be. Its application page accepts scores "taken within four years of application", but its FAQ says "Scores older than three years are not accepted." Plan on three years, and if your score is older, ask applydmd@bu.edu before you apply. Why this guide gives no acceptance rate. BU's pages give its class size, not how many people apply or receive offers, so no honest acceptance rate can be worked out from them. Prerequisite

coursework BU lists the courses every enrolling DMD student must have completed: Course. Courses or credit hours. Lab. Biology. 3 courses or 12–13 credit hours. Yes. General chemistry. 2 courses or 8–10 credit hours. Yes. Organic chemistry. 2 courses or 8–10 credit hours. Yes. Physics. 2 courses or 8–10 credit hours. Yes. Biochemistry. 1 course or 3–4 credit hours. Not listed. Upper-level biology, biochemistry, chemistry or physics. 2 courses, at least 6 credit hours. Not listed. Prerequisites must total at least 45 semester credit hours , all taken at an accredited US or Canadian college or university, and at least 30 of them at a four-year college or university, including at least one course each in biology, biochemistry, chemistry (general or organic) and physics. One course can't fill two requirements. Community college credit counts only if you also take a 200-level or higher course in the same subject at a four-year college or

university. No AP, IB or test-exemption credit, and no Pass/Fail grades. Every course on your transcript needs a letter grade, and science courses and labs must be taken in person. You can apply with courses in progress , but you must finish every prerequisite and a bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year US or Canadian college or university before you start. Letters: three letters of evaluation, two from faculty and one more academic or personal reference, or a pre-health committee evaluation. Graduated more than two years before you would start? BU asks you to keep up academic coursework, research or employment in the oral health field. The BU Goldman Interview: What BU Says Here is what BU says about its interview: It is on Zoom. In BU's words, "All interviews are conducted online via Zoom." Interviews are by invitation only, and BU notifies selected candidates by email. It is one interview, with a member of the admissions

committee. BU's remote interview experience adds Zoom sessions with student Admissions Ambassadors, Student Affairs, and Student Financial Services/Housing Resources. It is structured and calibrated. BU says it uses "a standardized scoring rubric and structured, calibrated interviews to promote fairness, consistency, and reduced bias", alongside "qualitative assessments of personal attributes and mission fit." It runs from September through March , though BU says it occasionally invites people for interviews outside that window. Applying early helps. BU's FAQ says applicants who submit and complete their applications in July and August "have a greater chance for an interview invitation than later applicants." Visit Day BU's admissions office can't accommodate drop-in visitors and doesn't arrange in-person meetings with applicants, and because the school is located within a healthcare facility, it can't offer tours to prospective

applicants. Instead, in BU's words, "applicants who have been interviewed and invited to interview will be invited to Visit Days." They run throughout the interview cycle, on Sundays, when no patient care is taking place, so the tour can include the patient treatment centers. BU says each one lasts about six hours and includes: breakfast, lunch and a presentation by the Dean of Admissions; a Q&A panel with the Deans of Admissions, Student Affairs, and Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Belonging, along with alumni; a current-student Q&A panel and a student organization fair; technology demonstrations in the Simulation Learning Center during the dental school tour. What applicants report These are posts by applicants in the 2025–26 cycle on a public applicant forum, not BU's words: Three out-of-state applicants posted email invitations dated 17 September, 20 October and 30 October 2025, each for a Zoom interview. An applicant invited in

October wrote on 4 December that they had been told their interviewer would contact them to set up the Zoom by the end of November, and to reach back out if not. One applicant reported an acceptance by email at 12:03 am on 15 December, BU's first decision date. Another reported an acceptance on 27 March 2026. What BU doesn't publish. How long the interview lasts, whether your interviewer has read your application, who the committee member is, and what is asked. BU's DMD pages mention no CASPer, Kira, bench test or MMI. Applicants who submit and complete their applications now have a greater chance for an interview invitation than later applicants. A few weeks after you submit. GSDM receives your application, then sends a receipt confirmation and a link to pay the $80 fee. September to March. Interviews, on Zoom, by invitation. Throughout the interview cycle. Sunday Visit Days for interviewed and invited applicants. December 15, 2026. AADSAS deadline for GSDM. From December 15 through July. Decision notifications; until you hear, your application is still under consideration. BU reviews applications on a rolling basis and re-reviews them throughout the cycle, checking for new letters of evaluation, transcript updates and DAT scores. It will not review an application until your official DAT scores arrive. What BU Goldman Looks For BU evaluates "scholastic performance

(including GPA, DAT scores, and course rigor), fitness and aptitude for dental study, and non‑cognitive attributes such as leadership, resilience, empathy, integrity, and commitment to service and diversity." Each of those attributes can anchor an interview answer: Resilience. Prepare a setback story: what went wrong, what you did next, and what changed because of it. Empathy. One person and one moment, told in detail, beats a list of volunteer hours. Integrity. Have an example of doing the right thing when it cost you something. Leadership. Show how you moved a group and what changed; a job or a research team works as well as a club. Commitment to service and diversity. Talk about service you kept up over time, and the people it served. The best Why BU material is in its curriculum. BU says its students are assigned patients within Group Practice teams that work like small dental practices, each led by a faculty Group Practice Leader.

First-year students take part in the APEX clerkship, working as interns in dental offices. The competency-based curriculum lets students progress at their own pace as they master each procedure, and the fourth year leaves room for research and elective externships, national and international. Connect one of these to how you want to learn. The practice questions below are ours, built on these criteria. BU does not publish its interview questions. BU does not publish its interview questions; these are practice questions built on what it says it weighs. It does not say whether your interviewer has read your

application either so build a 90-second arc that works both ways covering who you are the two or three experiences that led you to dentistry and why BU is the next step. Practice it on a video call so it sounds natural on Zoom rather than memorized. Why dentistry? BU expects competitive applicants to have in-person experience with a general dentist. Anchor your answer in something you saw or did there then say what it confirmed for you. Why BU? Use what BU says about its program such as Group Practice teams led by a faculty Group Practice Leader the first-year APEX clerkship in dental offices a competency-based curriculum and fourth-year elective externships national and international. Connect one of them to how you want to learn; praise for the name is not a reason. How will you contribute to the GSDM community? BU weighs “commitment to service and diversity” and assesses “mission fit.” Point to something you have kept doing over time

and say what you would bring from it to a class of 117. Behavioral Tell me about a setback. What did you do next? Resilience is one of the attributes BU names. Choose a real setback keep the story short and spend most of the answer on what you did next and what changed because of it. Describe a time you showed empathy for someone. Empathy is on the same list. Pick one person and one moment say what you noticed and what you did and skip the list of volunteer hours. Tell me about a time you did the right thing when it cost you something. BU names integrity among the attributes it evaluates. Be specific about what was at stake what you did and what you would do again. Tell me about a time you led a group. Leadership is the first attribute BU lists. Focus on how you moved people and what changed because of it; a job or a research team works as well as a club. Ethical / Scenario A patient needs treatment they cannot afford. What do you do?

Acknowledge the patient without judgment explore legitimate options such as phased treatment or a community clinic and never lower the standard of care. Show your reasoning; a question like this rarely has a single right answer. You see a classmate cheating on an exam. What do you do? Describe an escalation path from a direct conversation to the proper channels and say why integrity matters when patients trust your license. A patient refuses the treatment you recommend. How do you respond? Balance the patient s right to decide with their wellbeing. Explain clearly find out what worries them offer alternatives document the conversation and do not abandon the patient. Complete your application early BU s FAQ says applicants who submit and complete their applications in July and August have a greater chance for an interview invitation than later applicants. Your file is incomplete and won t be reviewed until your official DAT scores

arrive. Rehearse on a video call Every BU interview is on Zoom. Practice answering out loud on a video call check your camera light and sound and keep each story to about two minutes. Prepare for the attributes BU evaluates BU uses structured calibrated interviews and a standardized scoring rubric and names leadership resilience empathy integrity and commitment to service and diversity. Have a specific story ready for each. Watch your inbox after the invitation BU notifies selected candidates by email. A 2025–26 applicant reported on 4 December 2025 being told the interviewer would contact them to set up the Zoom and to reach back out if that didn t happen so follow any such instruction in your invitation. Is the BU dental interview in person or on Zoom? On Zoom. BU s FAQ says “All interviews are conducted online via Zoom.” Separately applicants who have been interviewed and invited to interview are invited to an in-person Visit Day on a Sunday which BU says lasts about six hours. When does BU interview and when do decisions come out? BU interviews from September through March and occasionally outside that window. Decision notifications are sent from December 15 through July and BU says that if you have not heard your application is still under consideration. What GPA and DAT do I need for BU dental

school? BU says successful applicants typically have a science GPA above 3.4 and a DAT Academic Average of 420 or higher on the new 200–600 scale which it gives as 20 or higher on the old 1–30 scale. It uses a holistic review so all aspects of an application are considered. How old can my DAT score be for BU? BU s pages disagree. Its application page asks for scores “taken within four years of application ” while its FAQ says “Scores older than three years are not accepted.” Plan on three years and ask applydmd@bu.edu if your score is older. Does BU require dental shadowing hours? BU sets no specific number of hours but it expects competitive applicants to have experience with a general dentist before applying. Paid or volunteer work in a dental setting counts; online or virtual experience does not. Do I need to be a Massachusetts resident for BU dental school? No. BU s FAQ says “Boston University is a private institution so state of

residence does not have a bearing on your eligibility.” Does BU require CASPer or Kira? BU s DMD admissions pages mention no CASPer Kira bench test or MMI. The test they require is the DAT (or the Canadian DAT) and invited applicants have a Zoom interview.
