Rutgers Dental School Interview: DMD Guide 2026-27

Rutgers DMD interview guide from Rutgers' own pages: invitation only, DAT first, offers from December 15, entering-class GPA and DAT, and how to prepare.

Rutgers accepts no one without an interview and grants none before your DAT scores arrive. Here is what Rutgers publishes about its interview, what applicants report, and how to prepare. return ( <> Rutgers DMD Requirements and Class Profile Rutgers School of Dental Medicine (RSDM) admits US applicants to its DMD program through AADSAS. It calls admission "highly selective and competitive", sets no minimum GPA or DAT, and publishes the averages of the class that entered in 2024. Metric. Rutgers' published figure. Note. Average science GPA. 3.7. Class entering in 2024 (Class of 2028). Average overall GPA. 3.7. Class entering in 2024. Average DAT Academic Average. 22. Old 1–30 scale. Average DAT Total Science. 22. Old 1–30 scale. Minimum GPA or DAT. None. A "holistic file" review. Oldest DAT accepted. 3 years before the cycle. Rutgers' FAQ. Residency. In- and out-of-state applicants welcome. Rutgers' own words. Which DAT scale are those

22s on?. The old one. The class that entered in 2024 took the DAT before 1 March 2025, when scoring moved to a 200–600 scale. Rutgers publishes no new-scale figure, so if you hold a new-scale score, don't compare it with a bare 22. Why this guide gives no class size or acceptance rate. Rutgers' predoctoral pages give the class averages, not the size of the class or the number of offers it makes, so no honest acceptance rate can be worked out from them. Prerequisite coursework Rutgers lists "the minimum predental courses required at time of application": Course. Credits. Lab. Biology. 8 credits. Yes. General chemistry. 8 credits. Yes. Organic chemistry. 8 credits. Yes. Physics. 8 credits. Yes. English. 6 credits. No. Advanced placement courses don't count toward the requirements. Letters: one pre-health advisors committee letter, which Rutgers prefers, or three letters: two from science faculty and a third from anyone else, such as an

employer. No supplemental application , but a $125 application fee, sent to the school when the Admissions Office contacts you. An offer is not final, and you cannot enroll, until your enrollment certification and criminal background check come back favorable. Rutgers also requires a disciplinary-action disclosure form. The Rutgers Interview: What Rutgers Says Rutgers' admissions pages say little about the interview itself, but four things are clear: It is required. In Rutgers' words, "No candidate will be accepted without an interview." It is by invitation only. "An interview will not be granted at the request of the applicant." The committee chooses whom to invite after "an individualized file review", based on "a number of criteria, including academic performance, DAT scores, leadership qualities, demonstrated compassion for others, and broad extracurricular activities." Your DAT comes first. "Interviews cannot be granted until your

DAT scores are received", and most pre-dental requirements should be complete before you are considered for one. Rutgers encourages taking the DAT no later than the fall of the year before you plan to start. Invitations arrive electronically , and every candidate is expected to confirm attendance. What applicants report Rutgers' FAQ lists six hotels near the school for applicants who are invited to interview, which points to a visit to the Newark campus. Applicants in the 2025–26 cycle reported the same. These are their posts on a public applicant forum, not Rutgers' words: An in-state applicant posted on 14 August 2025 that an invitation had arrived by email that day, for an in-person interview on 5 September. On 10 November, an applicant asked who had been invited for 5 December, a sign that interview days were still being scheduled into December. An applicant reported an acceptance by email at 12:05 am on 15 December, Rutgers' own

first date for acceptances. What Rutgers doesn't publish. The interview's format (one-on-one, a panel or MMI stations), how long it lasts, who interviews you, and whether this cycle's interviews are in person or virtual. Its predoctoral pages mention no CASPer, Kira or other assessment for the traditional DMD. Prepare for a conversation that may draw on your application, and confirm the details in your invitation. What Rutgers says. When you apply. It can take several weeks for an AADSAS application to reach the school, so "early application is

advisable". By the fall before you start. Rutgers encourages taking the DAT by then; there is no interview until your scores are received. Once your file is complete. The admissions committee reviews it, and invitations arrive electronically. From December 15. Acceptance notices go out, electronically via AADSAS. After January 1. Admission is on a rolling basis. What Rutgers Looks For Rutgers selects students "on the basis of scholastic achievement, fitness and aptitude for the study of dentistry, and other personal qualifications." Beyond grades, it says its committee "gives consideration to the use of language, special aptitudes, manual dexterity, and motivation", and it also considers "motivation and perseverance". Each can shape an interview answer: Use of language. How you explain things is part of what Rutgers weighs. Practice out loud until your main stories run clearly in two minutes or less. Manual dexterity and special

aptitudes. Rutgers says the committee considers them, not how. Have one concrete example of skilled work with your hands ready, such as lab technique, an instrument, art or repairs, in case it comes up. Motivation and perseverance. Prepare a setback story: what went wrong, what you did next, and what it taught you about sticking with something hard. Leadership and compassion. Both are among the criteria Rutgers uses to choose whom to interview, so have one example of each that you can discuss in depth. The best Why Rutgers material is in its clinic. Rutgers says its students gain "meaningful patient care experience from the earliest stages of their education": in the first and second years they begin building clinical skills by assisting in patient care. It describes dedicated treatment chairs, daily clinical responsibilities, opportunities to work alongside residents in specialty clinics, and elective coursework that includes

discipline-specific honors programs. Connect one of these to how you want to learn. The practice questions below are ours, built on these criteria. Rutgers does not publish its interview questions. Rutgers does not publish its interview questions; these are practice questions built on what it says it weighs. It does not say whether the interview draws on your application either so build a 90-second arc that works both ways covering who you are the two or three experiences that led you to dentistry and why Rutgers is the next step. Rutgers names your “use of language” among what it considers so practice it out loud until it sounds natural rather than memorized. Why dentistry? Rutgers mentions motivation twice in describing

what its committee considers. Trace yours to a specific moment then show how you tested it through shadowing clinical work or service. Why Rutgers? Use what Rutgers says about its program such as clinical skills from the first and second years by assisting in patient care dedicated treatment chairs daily clinical responsibilities and work alongside residents in specialty clinics. Connect one of them to how you want to learn; praise for the name is not a reason. Where do you see yourself in ten years? Rutgers describes work alongside residents in specialty clinics and elective coursework that includes discipline-specific honors programs. If a field draws you name it and say why; if you plan general practice describe the patients you want to serve. Behavioral Tell me about a setback. What did you do next? Rutgers says its committee considers “motivation and perseverance.” Choose a real setback keep the story short and spend most of the

answer on what you did next and what you would do differently. Describe a time you showed compassion for someone. “Demonstrated compassion for others” is one of the criteria Rutgers uses to choose whom to interview. Pick one person and one moment say what you noticed and what you did and skip the list of volunteer hours. Tell me about a time you led a group. Leadership qualities are on the same list. Focus on how you moved people and what changed because of it; a job or a research team works as well as a club. What have you done with your hands that prepared you for dentistry? Rutgers names manual dexterity among what its committee considers but does not say how it is judged. Lab technique an instrument art or repairs all count. Describe the skill and how you built it. Ethical / Scenario A patient needs treatment they cannot afford. What do you do? Acknowledge the patient without judgment explore legitimate options such as phased

treatment or a community clinic and never lower the standard of care. Interviewers listen for your reasoning not a single right answer. You see a classmate cheating on an exam. What do you do? Describe an escalation path from a direct conversation to the proper channels and say why integrity matters when patients trust your license. A patient refuses the treatment you recommend. How do you respond? Balance the patient s right to decide with their wellbeing. Explain clearly find out what worries them offer alternatives document the conversation and do not abandon the patient. Take the DAT early Rutgers will not interview you until your DAT scores are received and it encourages taking the exam no later than the fall of the year before you plan to start. A late DAT holds back everything after it. Submit AADSAS early Rutgers warns that it can take several weeks for an AADSAS application to reach the school and calls early application

advisable. After January 1 admission is on a rolling basis. Practice out loud not on paper Rutgers says its committee considers your use of language and your motivation. Record yourself answering listen back and tighten each story until it runs clearly in two minutes or less.
