Kentucky Dental School Interview: DMD 2026-27
University of Kentucky DMD guide from its own pages: a panel interview at the college, typically late August to early December, and 50+ shadowing hours.
Kentucky interviews in a panel format, typically from the end of August to early December, with panels drawn from Admissions Committee members, faculty, staff and students. Here is what UKCD publishes, where its pages differ, what applicants report, and how to prepare. return ( <> Kentucky DMD Requirements and Class Size The University of Kentucky College of Dentistry (UKCD) is on the UK HealthCare campus in Lexington; this guide covers its DMD, not the University of Louisville's. UKCD enrolled its first class in 1962, has graduated over 2,000 dentists, and calls itself "one of the smaller dental schools in the country, supporting a collegial atmosphere for our learners." Its DMD is a four-year program: the Class of 2030's mandatory SMILE Week ran July 27–30, 2026, before orientation on August 3. You apply through ADEA AADSAS, and once AADSAS verifies your application, UKCD emails you to request a $75 application fee (you can ask for a
fee waiver). UKCD's admissions and requirements pages print no year beside their dates; its tours page addresses "applicants to the 2026–2027 cycle." The years in this guide are ours, for a class starting in summer 2027. This is what UKCD publishes about the size of its class: Figure. What UKCD publishes. Where. Seats. “Currently, the College admits 40 Kentucky residents and 25 non-residents”. 2025–2026 Catalog. Residency mix. “typically 60 percent Kentucky residents and 40 percent non-residents”. 2025–2026 Catalog. Accepted each year. “approximately 65 students”. Fact sheet. Interview days. “12 candidates per day”. Admissions page. Class GPA and DAT averages. Not published. —. Minimum GPA or DAT. None published. —. Why this guide gives no GPA, DAT or acceptance rate. UKCD's admissions pages and its 2025–2026 Catalog publish no minimum GPA or DAT, no class averages and no counts of applicants, interviews or offers, so we give none and
compute no rate. The catalog says DAT scores "are considered along with a candidate's academic record and other criteria in the admissions decision," that results "should not be more than three years old" and that "the highest set of scores will be used." If you compare yourself with averages from other sources, check the scale: since 1 March 2025 the DAT has been scored from 200 to 600, and UKCD doesn't say how it compares scores from before and after the change. On how many it interviews, UKCD says only that "many more applicants are interviewed than there are positions in the class," at "12 candidates per day." In state or out of state? UKCD's 2025–2026 Catalog divides the class into 40 Kentucky residents and 25 non-residents (65 in all; the sum is ours, and it matches the fact sheet's "approximately 65 students" accepted each year). Residency also sets your deposit and your tuition: an accepted applicant pays a non-refundable
deposit of $250 as a Kentucky resident or $1,000 from out of state, and UKCD's estimated first-year tuition and fees for 2026–27, the year now under way, are $40,454 for Kentucky residents and $87,874 for non-residents ($84,920 and $133,350 in all, living off campus). It hasn't published 2027–28 figures. Kentucky's Council on Postsecondary Education oversees residency requirements, and the catalog refers residency questions to the University Registrar. UKCD's DMD pages we read don't address international applicants or visas. Prerequisite coursework Course. Semesters. Quarters. Biology, with laboratories. Two. Three. General chemistry, with laboratories. Two. Three. Organic chemistry, with laboratories. Two. Three. General physics, with laboratory. One. Two. English, “with emphasis on communications”. Two. Three. Microbiology. One. Two (the catalog says one semester). Biochemistry. One. Two (the catalog says one semester). Where and by
when: "All prerequisite coursework must be taken at a regionally accredited US institution and must be completed by matriculation in July." An offer "can be rescinded if prerequisite coursework has not been completed within the stated timeline." The catalog adds that prerequisites "must be taken for a grade option, not pass-fail"; the pages we read set no minimum grade. Any major: UKCD "seeks applicants who are well educated in the liberal arts and sciences," and its catalog says "students from all majors are welcome." It calls anatomy (human), biochemistry, cell biology, embryology, genetics, histology, immunology, molecular biology and physiology helpful, "but only after degree requirements have been completed," and says courses in the social sciences, history, literature, economics, philosophy and psychology will enrich your curriculum. A degree: the catalog asks admitted applicants who will enroll for "A final transcript with degree
posted" before they matriculate; last summer, the Class of 2030 had to have official final transcripts mailed by July 1. The college "is currently not accepting transfer students or transfer credits." The DAT: required of every applicant; results "should not be more than three years old and the highest set of scores will be used" (catalog). UKCD's requirements page says "We encourage applicants to submit their applications as early as possible, even without a DAT score, as this will allow a preliminary review of the application," and asks you, "When this applies," to upload your unofficial score report into AADSAS and email UKCDAdmissions@uky.edu. Three letters, through AADSAS: two from science faculty who taught you "in a classroom-based science course," in prerequisite areas such as biology, chemistry, organic chemistry, physics, microbiology or biochemistry, and a third that "must be provided from a dentist the applicant has
shadowed." A fourth is optional; research mentors and professors who haven't taught you in a classroom belong there, "as they do not fulfill the criteria of a required science letter." UKCD accepts extra letters directly "Only in exceptional circumstances," and its catalog says hardcopy letters "will not be connected to the application." Committee letters: see below. At least 50 hours of shadowing: "UKCD is continuing to require at least 50 hours of dental shadowing this year. The majority of shadowing hours should come from a general dentistry environment, supplemented by specialty practice hours." The page doesn't name the year, so confirm the number with UKCDAdmissions@uky.edu. Direct service: "applicants should demonstrate a commitment to service, more specifically direct service, and a desire to help others" (see What Kentucky Looks For). Technical standards: the catalog says "The ability to meet the following standards is a
requirement for admission," and UKCD's standards include moving "high-speed or low-speed dental drills with precision of less than one millimeter." If you have questions about them, UKCD's technical standards policy strongly encourages you to discuss them with the Admissions Committee Chair "before the interview"; its requirements page names "the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs or the Assistant Dean for Admissions and Student Affairs." Committee letters: UKCD's website and its catalog differ. UKCD's requirements page says "A committee letter from an institution, in place of individual science letters, will also satisfy the science letter requirement," and that "A third letter must be provided from a dentist the applicant has shadowed." Its 2025–2026 Catalog says "A pre-professional committee evaluation may be substituted for the three letters only if the committee includes a dental practitioner. If it does not, an additional letter
is required from a dental practitioner." The reading that satisfies both: always send a letter from a dentist you have shadowed, plus either two science-faculty letters or a committee letter. Confirm with UKCDAdmissions@uky.edu. CASPer or Kira?. UKCD's DMD admissions pages, its technical standards and its 2025–2026 Catalog don't mention CASPer, Acuity Insights, Kira, an MMI or any similar assessment, and they describe no hand-skills test. What they ask for is AADSAS with your transcripts, the DAT and your letters; at least 50 hours of shadowing; the $75 fee UKCD requests by email once AADSAS verifies your application; and, if you are invited, the interview. To confirm a rule where UKCD's pages differ, email UKCDAdmissions@uky.edu or call its Office of Admissions at 859-323-6071. Watch your email, junk folder included: UKCD says "We will communicate all updates by email," and AADSAS advises adding donotreply@webadmit.org to your safe
senders. Once the cycle begins, UKCD meets current applicants only "if and when they are scheduled for an interview," and "Current applicants may email or call for status updates only." The Kentucky Interview: What the College Says A panel, in conversation style. "UKCD conducts interviews in a panel format. This format allows each candidate to have a traditional interview in conversation style. Each interview panel will comprise members of the Admissions Committee, faculty, staff, and students." UKCD doesn't say how many people sit on a panel, how long the interview lasts, or whether the panel has read your application. By invitation, on a complete file. "Applicants are invited to interview at the request of the Admissions Committee. Only those application files that are complete will be considered for interviews." Its 2025–2026 Catalog says invitations follow "a holistic review of their materials" and that "All application materials
must be received by the Admissions Office before an interview can be scheduled." Typically from the end of August to early December. "Interview Invitations are extended via email beginning mid-July with the first interview sessions scheduled in late August." The schedule "typically runs from the end of August until early December," and "Rolling invites happen throughout the interview cycle (August–December) until all interview days are filled (12 candidates per day)." The page names no cycle. UKCD aims for at least 30 days' notice, and assigns your day. "We strive for at least a 30-day notification for the applicant to make travel arrangements. The applicant is given the next assigned day in the interview schedule with an opportunity to reschedule as needed." At the college, with a tour this cycle. The catalog invites applicants "to participate in an interview at the College of Dentistry." Once a session is full, the Student Affairs
Officer sends an interview packet about "their visit," with directions, airport and hotel information, restaurant recommendations and financial aid information, and "If there are any changes in UKCD faculty or staff participants prior to their visit, updates will be sent to the interview candidates." For 2026–27, UKCD's tours page says "Applicants who are invited to interview during this cycle will have a tour incorporated into their interview day." No UKCD page we read mentions a virtual interview. What an invitation means. "An invitation for an interview indicates that the Admissions Committee has a strong interest in you. It is important to note that many more applicants are interviewed than there are positions in the class." What it is for. "The interview is a chance for the Admissions Committee to become acquainted with candidates beyond the application." UKCD's technical standards say "Compassion, integrity, concern for others,
interpersonal skills, interests, and motivation are all personal qualities that will be assessed during the admissions and educational processes." Its Dean's Clinical Scholarship for entering students is awarded "based on prior academic qualifications, the Dental Admissions Test (DAT) scores, and personal interview." After the interview. "In the waiting period between the interview and the tell date, candidates may send in updates, letters of intent, etc." What a panel means at UKCD. UKCD's panels are drawn from members of the Admissions Committee, faculty, staff and students, and it calls the result "a traditional interview in conversation style." Expect questions from more than one person, possibly including a student; answer the person who asked, then bring the others in. UKCD doesn't say whether the panel has read your application, so be ready both to introduce yourself from the start and to discuss anything in your AADSAS
application. What applicants report These are posts on a public applicant forum, and an invite tracker that a forum volunteer compiles there from applicants' reports, not UKCD's words: This cycle (2026–27): the forum's invite tracker, which a volunteer compiles from applicants' reports (last updated 25 September 2026), lists UKCD's first invitations on 24 July and its interviews as in person, with the first interview date still "TBD." As of 7 October 2026, the forum's Kentucky thread for this cycle held only its opening post, and no invitation had been reported there. Last cycle (2025–26): that cycle's tracker listed first invitations on 25 July 2025 and first interview dates of 4–5 September 2025, in person; UKCD says its first sessions are scheduled in late August. In the forum's Kentucky thread, one out-of-state applicant whose application was verified on 9 June posted on 5 August 2025 that they had been invited by email that day,
with "Method of interview: In-Person." Another out-of-state applicant, whose application was complete on 18 July, posted on 4 September 2025 that they had been invited by email that day, also "In-person." Those are the thread's only two invitation reports. Neither applicant described the interview itself: the panel, how long it lasted, or what was asked. No one in the thread posted an acceptance or a waitlist. What UKCD doesn't publish. How long the interview lasts, how many people sit on a panel, whether the panel has read your application, what it asks, the dates of its interview days, the schedule of the day beyond the tour, and how soon decisions follow an interview. It does say no offer comes before December 15, and that decisions arrive by "an email at midnight and a phone call during the day." Reread your whole application before the day, and practice talking with several people at once. Practice Your Kentucky Answers Out Loud.

Kentucky's 2026–27 Admissions Timeline When. What UKCD says. Mid-May 2026. “The ADEA AADSAS application opens in mid-May, with submissions occurring in early June”; UKCD: “Plan to apply in May of the year prior to intended entrance”. 4–6 weeks after you submit. AADSAS verifies your transcripts: “a 4–6-week transcript verification process before an application reaches the Verified Status”. Once AADSAS verifies your application. UKCD emails you to request the $75 fee, “the first official email contact from the Admissions Office”; you can request a fee waiver. From mid-July 2026. Interview
invitations by email, “beginning mid-July”; UKCD strives for at least 30 days' notice. September 1 (2025–2026 Catalog). “UKCD has a Priority Deadline of September 1” in its 2025–2026 Catalog; its admissions pages publish no deadline for 2026–27 (if the date still applies, September 1, 2026 has passed). End of August to early December 2026. Interviews, typically; invitations roll “until all interview days are filled”. Not before December 15, 2026. First offers: “provisional or final acceptances will not be offered before December 15”; the catalog says “on or around December 15”; decisions come by “an email at midnight and a phone call during the day”. After December 15. The Admissions Committee “continues to offer admission to applicants until the class is filled” (catalog); waitlisted candidates “may submit updates and letters of intent”. Early February 2027. The entering class is usually confirmed “by early February” (catalog). After
the spring semester begins (2027). “Guidance is offered to those declined”; reapplicant counseling sessions ran March 1–May 12 in 2026. By matriculation in July 2027. Every prerequisite complete; a final transcript “with degree posted” (the Class of 2030 had to have final transcripts mailed by July 1, 2026). Summer 2027. You start; UKCD hasn't posted 2027 dates. The Class of 2030's mandatory SMILE Week ran July 27–30, 2026, before orientation on August 3, and UKCD's admissions page speaks of “the class to enroll in August”. UKCD prints no years beside these dates; the years are ours. Once you accept an offer, you pay a non-refundable deposit of $250 as a Kentucky resident or $1,000 from out of state, applied to your tuition at the beginning of the fall term. The catalog says "Candidates who apply early in the admissions cycle are at a distinct advantage over those who wait much later to submit their AADSAS application and other
credentials." No deadline on UKCD's admissions pages. UKCD's admissions and requirements pages publish no application deadline for 2026–27. Its 2025–2026 Catalog says "UKCD has a Priority Deadline of September 1"; if that still holds, it passed on September 1, 2026. Interview invitations roll "until all interview days are filled," and the schedule typically ends in early December, so if you haven't applied yet, email UKCDAdmissions@uky.edu before you submit to ask whether UKCD is still reviewing new applications. AADSAS verification alone takes 4–6 weeks, and only complete files are considered for interviews. What Kentucky Looks For UKCD's 2025–2026 Catalog says its Admissions Committee considers the quality of your preparation, "Dental Admission Test (DAT) scores, knowledge of and exposure to the dental profession, letters of recommendation, a commitment to service and other relevant factors." It seeks students "whose academic
preparation, personal qualities, and other qualifications suggest they will experience success in the curriculum and afterwards in the dental profession," and its technical standards name the personal qualities it assesses. Each can anchor an interview answer: Exposure to dentistry: UKCD requires shadowing "As affirmation that an applicant has spent time in the dental profession and has an understanding and desire to pursue dentistry as a career": at least 50 hours, mostly in general dentistry. Your dentist's letter "should provide insight into the applicant's understanding of the dental profession, professionalism, interpersonal skills, and motivation for a career in dentistry." Have one specific moment from shadowing ready, and what it showed you about the work. Direct service: "As a caring attitude is central to the practice of dentistry, applicants should demonstrate a commitment to service, more specifically direct service, and a
desire to help others." UKCD's examples include "tutoring, assisting seniors, volunteer EMT, coaching youth sports, mentoring." Choose a story in which you worked face to face with the people you served. Where you come from: "The college seeks to assemble a student body that includes individuals from a wide range of urban, rural, economic, and cultural backgrounds." Be ready to say what your background adds to a class. Compassion, integrity and your interests: the technical standards name "Compassion, integrity, concern for others, interpersonal skills, interests, and motivation." Have an example that shows each, rather than claims it, and talk about one interest outside dentistry in real detail. Explaining things simply: a student "must be able to communicate in lay language so that patients and their families can understand the patient's conditions," and UKCD's first-year course CDE 824 "aims to improve the student's ability to
communicate with patients and the public in an empathetic and professional manner." Practice explaining something technical in plain words. Calm with patients, open to feedback: a student must be able "to manage apprehensive patients with a range of moods and behaviors in a tactful, congenial, personal manner so as not to alienate or antagonize them," to "accept criticism and respond by appropriate modification of behavior," and "to function effectively under stress." Have an example of feedback you acted on. Problem solving and hand skills: "Problem solving, a critical skill demanded of dentists, requires all of these intellectual abilities," and students must "move high-speed or low-speed dental drills with precision of less than one millimeter." UKCD describes no hand-skills test, but be ready to talk through how you solve a problem and how you have built precision with your hands. UKCD's three principles: its dean writes that "Our
students need to be biologically oriented, technically capable, and socially sensitive," principles "presented by our founding fathers in the 1960s." Know what each means to you. UKCD's own advice for applicants. Apply early: "Plan to apply in May of the year prior to intended entrance," and early applicants "are at a distinct advantage" (catalog). Watch your email and your junk folder: "We will communicate all updates by email." If you are invited, UKCD sends an interview packet about your visit, and this cycle your tour is part of your interview day: its tours "will not be available from May 12th through the remainder of 2026" for this cycle's applicants. After the interview, you "may send in updates, letters of intent, etc." The best Why Kentucky material is in its clinics and its reach across Kentucky. UKCD's student dentists "begin their clinical education with patients in a school-based sealant project, Seal Kentucky, in rural
Kentucky," and its Seal Kentucky trips have brought screenings and sealants to schools, primarily in Eastern Kentucky, since 1996. In the fourth year, students "participate in a community-based learning experience providing services to underserved patients throughout the Commonwealth," and a field-experience course provides "a full-time, off-campus assignment to a dental practice environment for a period of 4 weeks." The student clinic "simulates the private group practice environment," with patients assigned to teams led by faculty. UKCD counts "over 20 intraoral scanners," and by graduation its students have had the opportunity to gain experience with same-day crowns, digital dentures and implants placed with guided surgery. The Class of 2029 was the first to take its new Systems-Based Integrated Biomedical Science courses, in which each body system is taught as an integrated unit, "followed by case-based small-group sessions where
they apply this knowledge to realistic patient scenarios." Its students volunteer at a monthly Saturday Morning Clinic for children, more than 84 percent of DMD students belong to at least one student organization, and a DMD-MBA can be completed within the four years. Its mission speaks of advancements "for the benefit of Kentuckians and beyond." Connect one of these to how you want to learn and whom you want to serve. The practice questions below are ours, built on these criteria. Kentucky does not publish its interview questions. Internationally trained dentist? Kentucky does not publish its interview questions; these are practice questions built on what it says it looks for. UKCD s panels are drawn from Admissions Committee members faculty staff and students and
UKCD doesn t say whether they have read your application so build a 90-second answer that works either who you are the experiences that led you to dentistry and why Kentucky is the next step. Look at each person on the panel not only the one who asked. Why dentistry? UKCD requires at least 50 hours of shadowing “As affirmation that an applicant has spent time in the dental profession and has an understanding and desire to pursue dentistry as a career.” Anchor your answer in something specific you saw while shadowing ideally in general dentistry where UKCD wants most of your hours then say what it confirmed for you about the work. Why Kentucky? Use what UKCD says about clinical education that begins with Seal Kentucky a school-based sealant project in rural Kentucky; a fourth-year community-based learning experience serving underserved patients throughout the Commonwealth; a student clinic that “simulates the private group practice
environment”; hands-on digital dentistry from the first year; and about 65 students a year. Connect one of them to how you want to learn or whom you want to serve; the location alone is not a reason. Which of UKCD s three principles do you most identify with? UKCD s dean writes that “Our students need to be biologically oriented technically capable and socially sensitive.” Pick one define it in your own words and give an experience that shows it; then say which of the three you most want to develop in dental school. Behavioral Tell me about a time you served someone directly. What did it teach you? UKCD says “applicants should demonstrate a commitment to service more specifically direct service and a desire to help others ” and gives examples such as tutoring assisting seniors volunteer EMT work coaching youth sports and mentoring. Choose an experience in which you worked face to face with people say what you did and what it changed in
how you see the people you served. Tell me about a time you received criticism. What did you do with it? UKCD s technical standards say a student “must be able to accept criticism and respond by appropriate modification of behavior.” Show that you listened without defending yourself changed something specific and what improved as a result. What do you do outside of school? UKCD s technical standards list “interests” among the personal qualities that “will be assessed during the admissions and educational processes ” and more than 84 percent of its DMD students are involved in at least one student organization. Pick one interest and talk about it in real what you do how long you have done it and what it has given you. How have you developed your hand skills? UKCD s technical standards require students to “move high-speed or low-speed dental drills with precision of less than one millimeter.” UKCD describes no hand-skills test so make the
case in one activity that demanded precision what you made or did and how you got better at it. Ethical / Scenario A patient is anxious and upset before treatment. How do you handle it? UKCD s technical standards ask students to “manage apprehensive patients with a range of moods and behaviors in a tactful congenial personal manner so as not to alienate or antagonize them.” Show that you would acknowledge the fear explain each step in plain words agree on a signal to pause and involve your supervising dentist if the patient wants to stop. A patient doesn t understand the treatment you are recommending. What do you do? UKCD s technical standards ask students to “communicate in lay language so that patients and their families can understand the patient s conditions ” and its first-year course CDE 824 “aims to improve the student s ability to communicate with patients and the public in an empathetic and professional manner.” Check what the
patient understands explain the options in plain words answer their worries and go ahead only with their informed agreement. At a school sealant visit a child whose parent hasn t given consent asks for sealants like their friends. What do you do? UKCD s Seal Kentucky trips apply sealants “to children whose parents consent to their treatment.” Explain to the child kindly why you can t treat them today never treat without consent and suggest a legitimate next step such as sending the form home again or telling your supervising faculty. Show that you can be warm and still follow the rules that protect patients. You see a classmate cheating on an exam. What do you do? UKCD s technical standards name “integrity” among the personal qualities it assesses and its catalog says the codes students are expected to follow “call for high standards of professional and human behavior in caring for patients.” Describe an escalation path from a direct
conversation to the proper channels and say why integrity matters when patients trust your license. Ask about the deadline before you apply UKCD s admissions pages publish no deadline for 2026–27 and its 2025–2026 Catalog gives a “Priority Deadline of September 1 ” which if it still applies has passed. Interview invitations roll “until all interview days are filled ” so if you haven t applied email UKCDAdmissions@uky.edu first allow 4–6 weeks for AADSAS verification and make sure your file is only complete files are considered for interviews. Prepare for a panel not one interviewer “UKCD conducts interviews in a panel format ” with panels drawn from “members of the Admissions Committee faculty staff and students ” in “a traditional interview in conversation style.” Practice answering several people at keep your answers short enough for others to ask their questions address the whole panel and be ready for a student s question as well as
a faculty member s. Plan your visit as soon as you re invited UKCD strives for “at least a 30-day notification for the applicant to make travel arrangements ” gives you the next assigned interview day with “an opportunity to reschedule as needed ” and sends an interview packet with directions and airport and hotel information. In 2026–27 your interview day includes a tour; UKCD s tours page says other tours aren t available to this cycle s applicants for the rest of 2026. Use the weeks after your interview UKCD says “In the waiting period between the interview and the tell date candidates may send in updates letters of intent etc.” No offer comes before December 15 and decisions arrive by “an email at midnight and a phone call during the day.” If you are waitlisted you “may submit updates and letters of intent ” so keep one real update ready.
