OU Dental School Interview (Oklahoma): DDS 2026-27
OU College of Dentistry DDS guide from its own pages: interviews Sept–Nov, a format it doesn't publish, DAT minimums and its Sept 30 deadline (passed).
OU interviews DDS applicants by invitation from September to November and communicates acceptances in mid-December, but doesn't publish the interview's format or setting. Here is what OU publishes, where its pages disagree, what applicants report, and how to prepare. return ( <> OU DDS Requirements and Class Figures The University of Oklahoma College of Dentistry in Oklahoma City calls itself "the exclusive institution offering a Doctor of Dental Surgery program" in Oklahoma. Its DDS takes four years, "Patient interaction begins in the first year," and OU offers a limited number of students the option of completing years three and four in Tulsa (below). You apply through AADSAS, and OU's 2025–2026 catalog adds an online supplement and fee (see below). The catalog gives September 30 as the deadline, which has passed for this cycle. OU's DDS page and catalog give these figures, without saying which class they describe: Figure. What OU
publishes. Class size. 60. Average GPA of admitted class. 3.7 (OU doesn't say which class). Average DAT of entering students. “between 19-21 in recent years,” on the old 1–30 scale, with no section named (its 2025–2026 catalog). Minimum GPA. 2.5 for all college work; 2.5 in math and science (“Minimum” on its DDS page, “Recommended” in its catalog). DAT minimums. 16 in each section on the old scale, listed with a 200–600 figure for each: Academic Average 350, Survey of Natural Sciences 360, Biology 360, General Chemistry 360, Organic Chemistry 370, Perceptual Ability 340, Quantitative Reasoning 360, Reading Comprehension 320 (now “Suggested,” pending regents' approval). Location. Oklahoma City; an option to complete years 3 and 4 in Tulsa, for a maximum of 8 third-year and 8 fourth-year students. OU's catalog says applicants "must have a minimum overall GPA of 2.5 and a minimum DAT score of 16. However, these scores are not considered
competitive." The OU pages we read give no counts of applicants, interviews or offers and no acceptance rate, and we don't compute one. Which DAT scale are these on? Both. OU's DDS page pairs each section's minimum on the old 1–30 scale with a figure on the 200–600 scale the DAT has used since 1 March 2025: "AA: 16 / 350," "SNS: 16 / 360," and so on. All eight of OU's 200–600 figures are exactly the ADA's Table 1 conversions of an old 16. The sections convert differently: an old 16 becomes 340 in Perceptual Ability but 370 in Organic Chemistry. The catalog's "Competitive scores for entering students have averaged between 19-21 in recent years" is on the old scale, names no section and gives no new-scale figure, so it has no single new-scale equivalent: in the ADA's Table 1, old scores of 19 to 21 become 370 to 410 in Reading Comprehension and 410 to 450 in the other seven sections. Those conversions are the ADA's, not OU's, and an
average is not a target. Since 1 March 2025 the ADA has reported every DAT score to AADSAS on the 200–600 scale, older attempts converted. OU says "Highest score is accepted" and "Exam score is valid for 3 years from the date of the exam." DAT and GPA minimums: OU's pages disagree. OU's DDS page now calls its DAT figures "Suggested* Minimums," with the note "*Pending final approval by the OU Board of Regents and the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education." In January 2026, an archived copy shows, the same page called the same figures "DAT Minimums." OU's 2025–2026 catalog says "All eligible applicants must have a minimum overall GPA of 2.5 and a minimum DAT score of 16." For math and science, the DDS page says "Minimum 2.5 math and science GPA," and the catalog says "Recommended 2.5." Take the stricter reading: treat 16 as a firm minimum in every section, meaning the 200–600 figure OU lists for each, and 2.5 in math and science as
a minimum, since a minimum excludes more applicants than a suggestion or a recommendation. Confirm with cod-admissions@ouhsc.edu or COD-admissions@ou.edu. Prerequisite coursework Course. Semester hours. Quarter hours. What OU specifies. Biology. 16. 24. With labs: “at least 2 Biology labs, however 4 completed labs are preferred”. General (inorganic) chemistry. 8. 12. With labs. Organic chemistry. 8. 12. With labs. Biochemistry. 3. 5. “A lab is not required” (its prerequisite chart). Physics. 8. 12. With labs; mechanics, light, heat, sound, electricity and radiation (its prerequisite chart). General psychology. 3. 5. AP credit accepted (see below). English. 6. 10. Composition or writing intensive; AP credit accepted (see below). Hours, not a degree: OU asks for a "Minimum of 90 semester hours of coursework from any accredited college or university (75 hours completed prior to application)." The pages we read don't require a bachelor's
degree. Its catalog advises applicants who completed a bachelor's degree "more than two years before expected dental school attendance" to "pursue academic activities or employment in the oral health field." Online labs now count: "Online labs will be accepted by the University of Oklahoma College of Dentistry DDS program," OU's DDS page says, and the catalog agrees. The DDS page changed during 2026: in January, it said "ALL labs must be taken in person." AP credit: accepted for English and psychology, and "Advanced Placement (AP) credits will NOT be accepted for any science prerequisite." OU's prerequisite chart adds that AP credit counts for English and psychology "if the degree-granting institution awarded college credit toward the bachelor’s degree," and that upper-level college courses in biology, chemistry or physics can fill those hours. OU's catalog calls the chart's lists of OU and OSU courses "for guidance only."
Writing-intensive English: the chart says university-designated writing intensive courses also satisfy the English requirement, and "A course description will be required at time of interview." The chart's file dates from May 2023; OU still links it from its 2025–2026 catalog. The DAT: "Designate OU College of Dentistry to receive your scores," and tell OU your planned test date if your test is still ahead or you plan to retake it. OU says "We will accept the unofficial Exam Report you received the day of your exam and you must email those to the Admissions Team." You don't have to wait for your DAT, or your letters, before submitting AADSAS. Letters, on letterhead, through AADSAS: "A letter from a dentist," and a recommendation from your institution's pre-professional advisory committee, which OU prefers. "In lieu of a committee recommendation, two letters of recommendation from science instructors are acceptable." Shadowing: "A
minimum of 100 hours of dental shadowing." OU says "Hours should reflect shadowing in at least 3 different offices of which 2 offices should be a general dental environment," across "a variety of specialties and dental environments" and "outside of places of employment." If you have dental assisting hours, OU says to contact its Office of Admissions, and to email the Admissions Team any updates to your observation hours. Community service: "A minimum of 100 hours of community service." OU says "Hours should reflect a variety of opportunities" and "Hours should show engagement in different types of communities." English proficiency: OU's catalog says TOEFL scores are required "of all applicants from countries where English is the second language," a rule that "pertains to any person born outside the United States and includes Permanent Residents of the U.S. (green card holders) and Naturalized U.S. Citizens." The minimum internet-based
score is 88. OU "may waive TOEFL scores if the applicant provides evidence of a diploma from an English-speaking high school or a bachelor’s degree from a U.S. institution." Every grade counts: OU Health's campus-wide Apply page says OU Health is excluded from the Oklahoma State Regents' academic forgiveness provisions ("repeat, reprieve, and renewal"), so "all grades earned will be included in grade point calculations when applying for acceptance to an OU Health program." Technical standards: OU's catalog lists them, including "sufficient dexterity to manipulate dental and dental hygiene equipment appropriately and to perform in class, clinic and laboratory settings for extended periods of time." A supplemental application this cycle? OU's pages don't agree. OU's 2025–2026 catalog lists two steps, "Step 1: Submit to AADSAS" and "Step 2: Submit to OU College of Dentistry," and the second includes an "On-line Application Supplement and
Fee," with no amount or due date. That link opens OU Health Sciences' online application, whose page says applicants who use a service such as AADSAS "must also complete the OUHSC application," though it addresses "Fall 2026 applicants," an earlier cycle. In January 2026, OU's DDS page listed an "OU Supplemental Application" under "Application" (an archived copy); today it lists only the "ADEA AADSAS Application," and OU Health's program portal sends DDS applicants straight to AADSAS. That portal lists an "Application Cost: $264," the same amount AADSAS charges for a first program this cycle, and a "Deposit Cost: $900," without saying what either covers or when the deposit is due. OU doesn't say whether its supplement is still required for 2026–27. Take the stricter reading: plan on completing it and paying the fee, as the catalog's Step 2 says, and confirm with cod-admissions@ouhsc.edu or COD-admissions@ou.edu. CASPer or Kira?. OU's
DDS page, the DDS page of its 2025–2026 catalog and the other OU pages we read don't mention CASPer, Acuity Insights, Kira, a situational judgment test or a bench test. What they ask for is AADSAS with your transcripts and letters, the DAT, at least 100 hours each of dental shadowing and community service, OU's online supplement and fee (as its catalog lists them) and, if you are invited, an interview. The skills testing on OU's catalog page for its Advanced Standing Program for International Dentists belongs to that program. OU's two contact listings differ. OU Health's contact page gives the College of Dentistry's cod-admissions@ouhsc.edu and (405) 271-5444 for the DDS, and OU Health's program portal gives COD-admissions@ou.edu and 405-271-3530. OU doesn't say which reaches its DDS admissions team, so write to both. OU's DDS page also offers a meeting with an admissions counselor, booked through OU Health's campus-visits page. The OU
Interview: What the College Says By invitation, from early fall or August. OU's DDS page says "Early Fall – Interview Invitations Begin Going out"; its 2025–2026 catalog says "August – Interview invitations begin going out." Neither says how invitations are sent. September to November. "Sept – Nov – Interviews Conducted" (its DDS page) and "September – November – Interviews Conducted" (its catalog). OU gives no year; for this cycle, we read it as September to November 2026. The DDS page carried the same timeline in January 2026, during last cycle. Acceptances in mid-December. "Mid-December – Acceptance Communicated" (its DDS page) and "December 15 – Acceptances communicated" (its catalog). ADEA calls December 15, 2026 this cycle's acceptance notification date. A course description, for writing-intensive English. If a university-designated writing-intensive course meets your English requirement, OU's prerequisite chart, a 2023 file its
catalog still links, says "A course description will be required at time of interview." Follow whatever OU's invitation tells you. What OU weighs. Its catalog lists "Subjective Criteria": at least 100 hours of dental shadowing, at least 100 hours of community service, and "Demonstrates quality communication and problem-solving skills, time management, personal character, and motivation." OU doesn't say how much the interview counts. In person or virtual? OU doesn't say. Neither OU's DDS page nor the DDS page of its catalog, nor any other OU page we read, says whether the interview is in person or virtual, who interviews you, how many interviewers you will meet, for how long, whether they have read your application, or what is asked. Two pages on OU's dental site whose addresses name admissions interviews now return its error page ("This page cannot be found..."), and the Internet Archive holds no copy of either, so this guide uses
nothing from them. The forum's invite tracker, which a volunteer compiles from applicants' reports, lists OU's interviews as in person in both recent cycles (below). OU's catalog page for its Advanced Standing Program for International Dentists describes that program's selection, over two days in October 2022: "personal interviews with faculty," and exercises in diagnosis-treatment planning and "in restorative dental procedures on a mannequin-mounted typodont." OU doesn't say whether the DDS interview resembles it, so don't prepare from it. Go by your invitation, and ask cod-admissions@ouhsc.edu or COD-admissions@ou.edu if anything is unclear. What applicants report These come from a public applicant forum and its invite tracker, which a volunteer compiles from applicants' reports. They are not OU's words: This cycle (2026–27): the tracker, last updated 25 September 2026, lists OU's first invitations on 11 September 2026 and a first
interview date of 2 October, in person. As of 8 October 2026, the forum's OU thread for this cycle held only its opening post, so no applicant there confirms or contradicts the tracker. Last cycle (2025–26): the tracker, last updated 22 October 2025, listed first invitations on 3 September 2025 and a first interview date of 19 September, in person. In the forum's OU thread, one out-of-state applicant posted on 26 October that they had been invited by email on 24 October, for an in-person interview on 7 November 2025. Theirs is the only invitation reported in that thread. On 30 October, another member asked anyone who had interviewed how it went; no one answered there. Both trackers report OU's first invitations in September, later than the "August" in its catalog. The tracker's two first interview dates and the thread's one reported interview date were all Fridays (our check of the calendar). OU doesn't say on which days it interviews.
No post in either thread describes the interview itself: how many interviewers, how long, whether they had read the application, or what was asked. Our 2026–27 interview tracker sets OU's row beside every other US and Puerto Rico school on the forum's tracker. What OU doesn't publish. How its interview runs: in person or virtual, one conversation or several, with whom, for how long, whether your interviewers have read your application, and what is asked. It does say what it looks for: communication and problem-solving skills, time management, personal character and motivation, plus shadowing you can reflect on and service across different communities. Reread your whole AADSAS application before the day, and be ready to talk about any part of it. Practice Your OU Answers Out Loud. OU's Admissions Timeline OU's DDS page and its 2025–2026 catalog give these dates without years. The years below are ours, for the 2026–27 cycle, and ADEA's AADSAS page gives its own dates for this cycle: When. What OU says. Mid-May (ADEA: May 12, 2026). “Mid May – ADEA AADSAS application opens” (its catalog). Early June (ADEA: from June 2, 2026). “Early June – Able to submit AADSAS application” (its catalog); its DDS page gives an “Application Window” of “June – September”. August, or early fall. Interview invitations begin: “August” in its catalog, “Early Fall” on its DDS page. By the first week of September. The catalog's advice: “It's advisable to submit your application by the first week of September 2023” (its 2025–2026 edition still prints 2023). September 30 (2026: passed). “Application deadline is September 30” (its
catalog). September–November (2026). Interviews conducted. December 15 (2026). “Acceptances communicated” (its catalog; its DDS page says “Mid-December”); ADEA's 2026–27 acceptance notification date is the same day. Summer (2027). The first year begins with a summer term: the catalog's course list starts with “Summer Year 1”; OU hasn't published a 2027 start date (its 2026–2027 academic calendar started its first-year dentistry and dental hygiene students on June 1, 2026). OU's catalog numbers its steps: "Step 1: Submit to AADSAS," with your application, transcripts and letters, then "Step 2: Submit to OU College of Dentistry," with the online supplement and fee and your DAT scores. OU's 2026–2027 cost sheet estimates a first-year cost of attendance of $93,777 for Oklahoma residents and $136,444 for non-residents, including tuition and fees of $50,106 and $92,773. OU calls the figures estimates, and they are for students enrolled in
2026–27. Invitations: early fall or August?. OU's DDS page says "Early Fall – Interview Invitations Begin Going out"; its 2025–2026 catalog says "August – Interview invitations begin going out." Take the stricter reading and be ready from August, the earlier date. The forum's invite tracker reports OU's first invitations in September in both recent cycles. Confirm with cod-admissions@ouhsc.edu or COD-admissions@ou.edu. September 30 has passed: what that means. OU's catalog gives September 30 as its deadline, and its DDS page gives an application window of June to September. ADEA says AADSAS "will not send your application to a school if it is received by ADEA AADSAS after the school's deadline." If you applied, interviews run through November and acceptances are communicated in mid-December. If you are planning for a later cycle, OU's own advice is to submit by the first week of September, and it says you don't need to wait for your
letters or DAT before submitting. Invitations begin in August (its catalog) or early fall (its DDS page), and the forum's tracker reports first invitations on 3 September 2025 and 11 September 2026, weeks before the deadline. What OU Looks For OU's catalog lists its subjective criteria: a minimum of 100 hours of dental shadowing, a minimum of 100 hours of community service, and "Demonstrates quality communication and problem-solving skills, time management, personal character, and motivation." With its technical standards, its values and its mission, they make the best checklist for the interview: Communication: OU's technical standards say "Students must be able to communicate effectively with patients; convey or exchange information at a level allowing development of a health history; identify problems presented; explain alternative solutions; and give directions during treatment and post treatment." Practice explaining something
technical in plain words. Problem solving: the same standards say "Students must be able to use reasoning to analyze and integrate learned material and apply principles to new problems." Practice talking through a problem out loud: the options, what you would weigh, and why you would choose one. Time management: one of the five qualities OU's catalog names. OU's course list includes a summer term in each of the four years, and its technical standards say students "must be able to tolerate physically taxing workloads and to function effectively under stress." Have an example of a demanding stretch you planned your way through. Personal character: OU's first value is "Professionalism: Committed to upholding the highest standards of professionalism in ethical conduct, patient care, interprofessional collaboration and leadership." Its 2026–2027 student handbook names the areas a Professionalism Concerns Report can cite: "Integrity &
Honesty," "Patient-Centered Care & Patient Safety," "Respect," "Service & Working within the Team," "Responsibility" and "Responsiveness, Adaptability, & Self-Improvement." Have a story for two or three of them. Motivation you can reflect on: about shadowing, OU says "You should be able to reflect on these experiences and describe how they impact you." Pick moments from more than one office and say what each changed in how you see dentistry. Service across communities: OU says service hours "should show engagement in different types of communities." Its mission is "To provide outstanding patient care and dental education to continuously improve the health of Oklahomans and those we serve," and its strategic plan includes "Address Health Disparities Across Oklahoma." Relationships with patients: the technical standards ask for "the development of mature, sensitive and effective relationships with patients," and OU's student clinics say
"We welcome special needs patients in our student clinics." Think of a time you put someone at ease who was frightened or upset. Hand skills: the technical standards call for "sufficient dexterity to manipulate dental and dental hygiene equipment appropriately." Be ready to describe one activity concretely. OU's standards for its students make a good ethics checklist. OU's values include "Accountability: Hold ourselves accountable to personifying the mission, vision and values of the University of Oklahoma College of Dentistry." Its handbook says that "Upon acceptance of an offer of admission, the student commits to comply with all professional conduct regulations established by the University, respective college, and program." OU's course list includes Introduction to Ethics in the first year and Ethical and Legal Aspects of Dentistry in the fourth. In its student clinics, fees are "normally 40 – 60% lower than private practice fees,"
"Patients are expected to pay for services before the procedure is performed," and patients "may qualify for Patient Assistance Funding for non-covered services." Measure your answers to ethical questions against these. The best Why OU material is in its clinics. OU's dean says "Our curriculum is developed around a patient-centered comprehensive care model, meaning individual students provide their patients’ complete oral health care from start to finish." Students learn in "three comprehensive care clinics," and OU's prospective-students page describes "a patient base that allows you to focus on learning, not finding patients," training with intraoral scanning and digital workflows, and service built into the curriculum, "including the Oklahoma Mission of Mercy, Kids' Day, and externships." Each February, Kids' Day gives free care to children ages 4–12, provided by OU's dental students under faculty supervision. A maximum of eight
third-year and eight fourth-year students may be assigned to the Tulsa Clinic, at the OU-Tulsa Schusterman Center Campus, by lottery if more eligible students want Tulsa than there are places; they are enrolled in "exactly the same curriculum." OU's regents authorized a college of dentistry in 1954 "to respond to the need of underserved areas of rural Oklahoma," and its student organizations include a Rural Dentistry Interest Group, which exists "to bring together dental students who have an interest in practicing rurally." Connect one of these to how you want to learn and whom you want to serve. The practice questions below are ours, built on these criteria. The OU pages we read don't publish interview questions. Internationally trained dentist? OU's Advanced Standing Program for International Dentists (ASPID) is a separate program that "offers qualified graduates of international dental programs the opportunity to earn the Doctor of
Dental Surgery (D.D.S.) degree in 2 ½ years," with its own application through CAAPID and its own interview and skills testing. The OU pages we read don t publish interview questions; these are practice questions built on what OU says it weighs. OU doesn t say who will interview you or whether they will have read your application so build a 90-second answer that stands on its who you are the experiences that led you to dentistry and why OU is the next step. Its catalog
names personal character and motivation among its subjective let your story show both. Why dentistry? OU asks for at least 100 hours of dental shadowing which it says should span at least 3 offices and “You should be able to reflect on these experiences and describe how they impact you.” Anchor your answer in something specific you saw a dentist do say what it showed you about the profession and how it shaped your plans. Why OU? Use what OU says about its a curriculum built around “a patient-centered comprehensive care model ” patient interaction from the first year its three comprehensive care clinics service built into the curriculum through the Oklahoma Mission of Mercy Kids Day and externships and an option to complete years three and four in Tulsa. Connect one of them to how you want to learn and whom you want to serve; cost or location alone is not a reason. Where do you see yourself practicing and why? OU s mission is “To provide
outstanding patient care and dental education to continuously improve the health of Oklahomans and those we serve ” its strategic plan includes “Address Health Disparities Across Oklahoma ” and its regents authorized a college of dentistry in 1954 “to respond to the need of underserved areas of rural Oklahoma.” Name a place you know a need you have seen there and what you would bring to it. If you are from out of state be honest about your plans and what draws you to OU. Behavioral Tell me about a time you had more to do than time to do it. Time management is one of the qualities OU s catalog names and OU s course list includes a summer term in each of the four years. Describe one demanding what you were carrying how you planned it what you set aside or shared and what you would do differently. Describe a problem you solved that had no obvious answer. OU s catalog names problem-solving skills and its technical standards say students
must be able “to use reasoning to analyze and integrate learned material and apply principles to new problems.” Walk through the options you saw what you weighed what you chose and what happened. Tell me about your community service. What did it teach you? OU asks for at least 100 hours of community service and says “Hours should reflect a variety of opportunities” and “Hours should show engagement in different types of communities.” Pick one experience describe the people you served with respect and say what it taught you and how it shapes the dentist you want to be. Tell me about a time you received critical feedback. OU s 2026–2027 student handbook names “Responsiveness Adaptability & Self-Improvement” among the areas a Professionalism Concerns Report can cite. Name the feedback what you changed and the evidence that it worked. Ethical / Scenario A patient is anxious and upset before treatment. How do you handle it? OU s technical
standards ask for “the development of mature sensitive and effective relationships with patients” and the ability to “explain alternative solutions.” Show that you would acknowledge the fear explain each step in plain words agree on a signal to pause and involve your supervising dentist if the patient wants to stop. A clinic patient can t afford the treatment they need. What do you do? OU s student clinics say fees are “normally 40 – 60% lower than private practice fees ” that “Patients are expected to pay for services before the procedure is performed ” and that patients “may qualify for Patient Assistance Funding for non-covered services.” Acknowledge the patient without judgment explore legitimate options with your supervising faculty member and never lower the standard of care. Show your reasoning; a question like this rarely has a single right answer. You see a classmate cheating on an exam. What do you do? OU s values begin with “
Committed to upholding the highest standards of professionalism in ethical conduct patient care interprofessional collaboration and leadership ” and its handbook says that “Upon acceptance of an offer of admission the student commits to comply with all professional conduct regulations established by the University respective college and program.” Describe an escalation path from a direct conversation to the proper channels and say why integrity matters when patients trust your license. A classmate on a group project keeps missing deadlines. What do you do? OU s 2026–2027 student handbook names “Service & Working within the Team” and “Responsibility” among the areas a Professionalism Concerns Report can cite. Talk to your classmate privately first find out what is going on and offer help and involve faculty only if it continues. Show that fairness to the team and respect for the person can go together. This cycle s deadline has passed;
for the next one submit early OU s catalog gives September 30 as its deadline which for 2026–27 has passed and advises submitting by the first week of September; it says you don t need to wait for your letters or DAT before submitting. Interview invitations begin in August (its catalog) or early fall (its DDS page) and the forum s invite tracker compiled by a volunteer from applicants reports lists first invitations on 3 September 2025 and 11 September 2026. Prepare for a format OU doesn t publish OU s DDS page and catalog say only that interviews are conducted from September to November. It doesn t say who interviews you for how long in person or online or whether your interviewers have read your application so know your whole AADSAS application well enough to tell its story yourself. The forum s invite tracker lists OU s interviews as in person in both recent cycles; go by your invitation. Be ready to reflect on your shadowing and
