Pitt Dental School Interview: DMD 2026-27
Pitt DMD interview guide from Pitt's own pages: faculty interviews on selected Mondays, the Oct 31, 2026 deadline and a 410 DAT minimum (200–600 scale).
Pitt's required interview is made up of personal interviews with members of its faculty and presentations by department chairs and directors, mostly in the fall and on selected Mondays. Here is what Pitt publishes, what applicants report, and how to prepare. return ( <> Pitt DMD Requirements and Class Size The University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine (Pitt Dental Medicine), established in 1896, runs a four-year DMD program in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Each class has 80 students; the program for its White Coat Ceremony on August 21, 2026 lists 80 in the DMD Class of 2030. You apply through AADSAS by October 31, 2026, and pay Pitt a $75 non-refundable supplemental application fee. Pitt's admissions pages give its minimums, not the GPA and DAT averages of the students it admits. Figure. What Pitt publishes. Class size. 80. Minimum GPA. A total GPA of 3.2, “including overall GPA, science GPA, and prerequisite GPA”. Minimum DAT.
Academic Average 410 (“Formerly 19”), required; 390 in each subsection, preferred. Entering class GPA and DAT. Not published on Pitt's admissions pages. Applications, interviews and offers. Not published on Pitt's admissions pages. Which DAT scale is 410 on?. The 200–600 scale the DAT has used since 1 March 2025. Pitt says the DAT “has transitioned from a 2-digit scoring system to a 3-digit scoring system” and prints its minimum Academic Average as “410 (Formerly 19),” so 19 is Pitt's own old-scale equivalent. The 390 it prefers in each subsection is also on the new scale; Pitt gives no old-scale figure for it, and we don't convert one. Pitt calls 410 “required” and, in the next sentence, calls both scores “minimum guidelines; competitive applicants typically exceed these thresholds.” Treat 410 as a floor, not a target. Why this guide gives no acceptance rate or class averages. Pitt's admissions pages give a class size of 80 and the
minimums above, but not how many applied, were interviewed or were offered a seat, or the GPA and DAT of the students it admitted. Without those, no acceptance rate or class average can be worked out from its pages. Prerequisite coursework Pitt requires the courses below to be completed before you matriculate; anatomy, the last row, is recommended but not required: Subject. Courses. English. English I and an English/writing-intensive course; at least one of the two should be an English/literature course. Biology. Biology I and II, with lab. Physics. Physics I and II. General chemistry. Chemistry I and II, with lab. Organic chemistry. Organic Chemistry I and II, with lab. Biochemistry. One course. Anatomy. 3 semester hours, recommended but not required. Science prerequisites from the last five years. Pitt says “All science prerequisite coursework must be completed within the last five years.” Grades: Pitt requires “A minimum grade of C
or 2.0 GPA for prerequisite courses” and strongly prefers grades of B or higher, taken onsite at a four-year institution. Pitt accepts pass/fail grades only for courses from the spring and summer 2020 semesters. Community college and AP/IB: Pitt prefers that no more than one-third of your credits come from a community or junior college, accepts no more than 60 of the minimum required credits from one, and prefers classes taken onsite. AP or IB credit counts for a prerequisite if your degree-granting institution awarded college credit for it toward your bachelor's degree. A bachelor's degree from the United States or Canada, before you matriculate. Letters, through AADSAS: a pre-health advisory committee letter, which Pitt prefers, or three letters from separate individuals, two of whom must be a professor, advisor or mentor. Pitt's Faculty Admissions Committee strongly prefers letters from non-relatives, and Pitt says a total of four
letters, including the committee letter, will be accepted through AADSAS this cycle. No residency requirement. Pitt says “There are no residency requirements for either application or admission.” Tuition differs: its estimated 2026–27 budget lists $58,690 a year in its in-state (“PA”) column and $74,592 out of state. Federal Stafford loans are available only to US citizens and permanent residents. Shadowing: Pitt's admissions pages set no number of hours. Pitt says it “does not provide shadowing opportunities at the School or with local dentists” and recommends contacting your family dentist, and at the interview it expects “evidence of personal exposure to the field of dentistry.” Serving as a patient. Pitt says part of its educational experience “requires students to serve as patients for other students.” Essential Program Standards. Offers of admission are contingent on your ability to fulfill Pitt's Essential Program Standards,
which “describe the nonacademic essential functions that are required for admission to, advancement through, and graduation from, the program.” CASPer or Kira?. Pitt's DMD admissions pages, its Essential Program Standards and the dental school's pages in the 2026–27 catalog don't mention CASPer, Acuity Insights, Kira or any similar assessment. What Pitt asks for is AADSAS, the $75 supplemental fee, the requirements above and, if you are invited, the interview. Pitt's Office of Student Affairs handles admissions questions at dentaladmissions@pitt.edu or 412-648-2349. The Pitt Interview: What Pitt Says Required, and by invitation only. “A personal interview is a requirement for admission.” Invitations are “sent after thorough review of submitted material,” and Pitt says an invitation “does not guarantee acceptance.” Faculty interviews and presentations. In Pitt's words, “The interview is composed of personal interviews with members of our
faculty, and presentations by various department chairs and directors.” Pitt doesn't say how many faculty members you meet or for how long. Students and a tour. “Applicants have an opportunity to interact with our current dental students and tour the School of Dental Medicine facilities.” Mostly in the fall, on selected Mondays. “Most interviews take place during the fall term of each year,” and “Interviews occur on selected Mondays.” What Pitt looks for. “During the interview, applicants are expected to display evidence of personal exposure to the field of dentistry, as well as qualities of maturity, motivation, and integrity.” Visit Days. Pitt lists Visit Days for interviewed applicants, “by invitation only to candidates that have been selected for interviews,” with invitations sent individually. It also says that “no personal meetings or one-on-one tours will be given during the application cycle,” and that “Invitations to specific
events will be offered only to interviewed students in the Fall term.” In person or virtual? Pitt's DMD pages don't say. Pitt mentions touring its facilities and lists Visit Days for applicants selected for interviews, but its DMD pages don't say whether the interview itself is in person or virtual. One applicant this cycle described it as virtual, and the forum's invite tracker (compiled by a volunteer from applicants' reports) lists it as virtual in 2025–26 and 2026–27 (see below). The virtual interview and in-person bench test on Pitt's website belong to its International Advanced Standing Program for internationally trained dentists; Pitt's DMD pages mention no bench test. Go by your invitation, and ask dentaladmissions@pitt.edu if it's unclear. What applicants report These come from a public applicant forum and its invite tracker (compiled by a volunteer from applicants' reports), not from Pitt: This cycle (2026–27): one applicant
posted on 18 August 2026 that they had been notified by email that day of an interview on 31 August, and described the method as “Virtual only, consists of an interview and a presentation session.” The forum's invite tracker (compiled by a volunteer from applicants' reports) gives the same dates for Pitt's first invitations and first interview this cycle, and lists the method as virtual. Last cycle (2025–26): the tracker lists Pitt's first invitations on 2 September and its first interview on 9 September 2025, also virtual. On 10 September 2025 one applicant asked those “who interviewed on 9/9 and also had their virtual info session” when the info session began and ended, and on 12 September another asked whether anyone had received the Zoom link for the virtual info session. Decisions (2025–26): on 15 December 2025, one applicant who had interviewed on 2 December wrote that they had been told “even though it was close we would still
hear back on the 15th,” but hadn't heard anything all day. Mondays only?. Pitt's FAQ says “Interviews occur on selected Mondays,” and 31 August 2026 was a Monday. But 9 September and 2 December 2025, the interview dates in last cycle's posts, were Tuesdays. Go by the date in your invitation. What Pitt doesn't publish. How long the interview lasts, how many faculty members you meet, whether they have read your application, whether it is in person or virtual, and what is asked. No post in the forum's two recent Pitt threads says what the faculty interview asks or how long it lasts. Since Pitt doesn't say whether the faculty members who interview you have seen your file, prepare your main experiences so they make sense to someone hearing them for the first time. AADSAS deadline; your DAT scores may be no more than three years old on this date. At the time of application. The $75 non-refundable supplemental fee; if you have an AADSAS fee waiver letter, Pitt asks you to email a copy so the fee can be waived. Mostly the fall term, on selected Mondays. Interviews, by invitation. December 15, 2026. ADEA's acceptance notification date for 2026–27; Pitt's rolling admissions begin on the earliest acceptance date and continue until the class is filled. By the due date on your offer. A $2,000 enrollment deposit; seats fill
in the order deposits arrive. By June 30 before you enroll. A successful FBI background check and any contingencies, including your bachelor's degree. Pitt reviews applications on an ongoing basis, and only once they meet every admission requirement and the AADSAS application and fee are complete. Its reapplication page warns that “An application received at a late point in the cycle will not be given the same consideration as an application received at an earlier date.” If you're applying this cycle and haven't submitted, don't wait for October 31. Pitt gives no separate last date to take the DAT, so plan to have your scores in AADSAS by then. December 13 or December 15?. Pitt's admissions page still says “the earliest date of acceptance to American dental schools for 2024 will be December 13th,” a date from an earlier cycle. For 2026–27, ADEA lists December 15, 2026 as the dental school acceptance notification date. Pitt notifies
applicants “initially by phone, followed by written acceptance and offers of admission.” To confirm this cycle's date, email dentaladmissions@pitt.edu. An offer from Pitt isn't a seat until your deposit is in. Pitt's class is limited to 80, and seats “will be filled in the order in which deposits of individuals who have been offered admission to the University are received.” The $2,000 deposit is non-refundable except as your offer letter says, is credited toward tuition upon matriculation, and is due no later than the date on your offer, but if the class fills before then, paying by that date doesn't guarantee a seat. Admitted applicants who deposit after the class is full go onto a “deferred enrollment list” and move into the class, in deposit order, only if seats open. If you're never offered a seat from that list, your deposit is refunded; if you're offered one and decline, it isn't. Pitt says “it is imperative that you submit your
deposit as soon as possible.” What Pitt Looks For Pitt names four things it expects to see at the interview: “evidence of personal exposure to the field of dentistry, as well as qualities of maturity, motivation, and integrity.” Beyond the interview, its values statement expects faculty, staff, residents and students to “embody and display” six values (service, passion for excellence, professionalism and integrity, leadership, collaboration and humanism), and its Essential Program Standards, on which offers of admission are contingent, describe how it expects students to communicate and behave. Each can anchor an interview answer: Personal exposure to dentistry: describe specific moments you saw or took part in, in a dental setting, and what they taught you about the work. Pitt doesn't arrange shadowing for applicants; it suggests your family dentist. Maturity: Pitt's standards ask students to demonstrate “emotional maturity,” manage
stress “under heavy workloads” and tolerate “uncertainty and ambiguity.” Have an example of staying steady when something went wrong. Motivation: show commitment you've kept up over time. Pitt's reapplication advice asks returning applicants to “Demonstrate continuing motivation by extending commitment to volunteering and shadowing within the profession.” Integrity: “Professionalism and Integrity” is one of Pitt's values, defined as “Adhering to the highest ethical and professional standards of our profession,” and its standards include “Is honest with others” and “Takes responsibility for behaviors and actions.” Have an example of owning a mistake. Communication: Pitt expects students to communicate “compassionately, respectfully, sensitively, and coherently,” and its standards include “Verbal and/or written communications are logical, linear, and coherent.” In an interview, that means answering the question you were asked, in order,
and finishing. Service and collaboration: Pitt's values begin with “Providing exemplary service to our students, faculty, patients, and society” and include “Embracing a team approach in working with others to accomplish shared goals.” Bring one service story and one team story. Pitt also says it is “dedicated to preparing culturally competent world class clinicians, educators and scientists that are as diverse as the challenges faced and populations served,” and “Applicants from population segments underrepresented in dentistry are encouraged to apply for admission.” The best Why Pitt material is in its curriculum. Pitt's DMD curriculum weaves four threads through all four years: professionalism and ethics, person-centered care, integration of the sciences, and evidence-based care and critical thinking. Its catalog lists a Professionalism and Ethics course in every term, from the first fall to the last spring. Patient care begins in
the first year: students practice taking a health history with standardized patients and learn to perform an oral exam on each other before being assigned their own patient in the summer of the first year, and part of the training requires students to serve as patients for one another. Through SCOPE, students spend at least 50 hours in non-dental community service in the first two years and at least two weeks providing clinical dental care at one of its affiliated community health center clinics, a network across Pennsylvania, Maryland and Ohio. Pitt says that more than half a century ago it pioneered the specialty dental care it now delivers in its Center for Patients with Special Needs, where predoctoral students rotate; the Center received ADEA's Gies Award for Innovation in 2018. Applicants interested in a simultaneous PhD or MS in Oral and Craniofacial Sciences say so on the dental application and write an essay. Connect one of
these to the dentist you want to become. The practice questions below are ours, built on these criteria. Pitt does not publish its interview questions. Internationally trained dentist? Pitt does not publish its interview questions; these are practice questions built on what it says it looks for. Pitt doesn t say
whether the faculty members who interview you have read your application so build a 90-second arc that works either who you are the experiences that led you to dentistry and why Pitt is the next step. Why dentistry? Pitt expects you to display “evidence of personal exposure to the field of dentistry” and “motivation.” Anchor your answer in something you saw or did in a dental setting then say what it confirmed for you. Why Pitt? Use what Pitt says about its program such as patient care that begins in the first year a Professionalism and Ethics course in every term of its curriculum SCOPE s community service and community health center rotations and its Center for Patients with Special Needs. Connect one of them to the dentist you want to become; praise for the name or the city is not a reason. What have you seen a dentist do that made you want to do it yourself? This is where your exposure to dentistry shows. Pitt doesn t provide
shadowing for applicants and recommends your family dentist. Describe one specific what the dentist did how the patient responded and what it showed you about the work. Behavioral Tell me about a time you handled a heavy workload or a setback. Pitt names maturity among the qualities it expects at the interview and its Essential Program Standards ask students to demonstrate “emotional maturity” and manage stress “under heavy workloads.” Say what happened what you did and what you would do again. Tell me about a time you worked with a team toward a shared goal. Collaboration is one of Pitt s “Embracing a team approach in working with others to accomplish shared goals.” Keep the setup short and spend most of the answer on what you contributed and how the team got there. Tell me about a mistake you made and how you handled it. Pitt looks for integrity and its standards include “Takes responsibility for behaviors and actions” and “Is open to
feedback from instructors.” Be specific about what went wrong what you did about it and what you do differently now. Tell me about your community service. Service is the first of Pitt s values and its SCOPE program has students spend at least 50 hours in non-dental community service in their first two years. Choose service you kept up over time and talk about the people it served rather than the hours. Ethical / Scenario A patient needs treatment they cannot afford. What do you do? Pitt s mission includes “Service to the diverse community of patients who entrust themselves to our care.” Acknowledge the patient without judgment explore legitimate options such as phased treatment or a community clinic and never lower the standard of care. Show your reasoning; a question like this rarely has a single right answer. You see a classmate cheating on an exam. What do you do? Pitt defines its value of professionalism and integrity as “Adhering
to the highest ethical and professional standards of our profession.” Describe an escalation path from a direct conversation to the proper channels and say why integrity matters when patients trust your license. A patient with a disability is anxious about dental treatment. How do you approach the visit? Pitt s predoctoral students rotate through its Center for Patients with Special Needs and its standards ask students to communicate “compassionately respectfully sensitively and coherently.” Speak to the patient directly ask what helps them explain each step in plain words and check in as you go. A patient refuses the treatment you recommend. How do you respond? Balance the patient s right to decide with their wellbeing. Explain clearly find out what worries them offer alternatives document the conversation and do not abandon the patient. Don t wait for October 31 Pitt s AADSAS deadline is October 31 2026 but its FAQ says “we strongly
suggest applying prior to September ” and its reapplication page warns that an application received late in the cycle “will not be given the same consideration as an application received at an earlier date.” If you haven t submitted do it now and pay the $75 supplemental fee with your application. Bring specific evidence of exposure to dentistry Pitt expects interviewees to display “evidence of personal exposure to the field of dentistry.” It doesn t arrange shadowing for applicants and recommends your family dentist. Have two or three specific moments what you saw what the dentist did and what it taught you. Prepare questions for the presentations and the students Pitt s interview includes presentations by department chairs and directors and Pitt says applicants have an opportunity to interact with current dental students. Have two or three questions ready that show you ve read about its curriculum such as SCOPE or the Center for
Patients with Special Needs. If you re admitted deposit quickly Pitt fills its 80 seats in the order deposits arrive. If the class fills before your $2 000 deposit is in you go onto a deferred enrollment list even if your offer s due date hasn t passed. Pitt says “it is imperative that you submit your deposit as soon as possible.” Requirement Detail Degree awarded DMD four years (Pittsburgh Pennsylvania) Application AADSAS due October 31 2026 plus a $75 non-refundable supplemental fee paid to Pitt at the time of application Class size 80 Applications and interviews Not published on Pitt s admissions pages Acceptance rate Not published (Pitt gives class size not applications interviews or offers) Entering class GPA and DAT Not published on Pitt s admissions pages Minimum GPA 3.2 total including overall science and prerequisite GPA; a minimum grade of C or 2.0 GPA for prerequisite courses Minimum DAT Academic Average 410 (“Formerly 19”)

Pitt says “The interview is composed of personal interviews with members of our faculty and presentations by various department chairs and directors ” and that applicants can interact with current dental students and tour the school s facilities. Interviews are required for admission by invitation only mostly in the fall term and on selected Mondays. Pitt doesn t publish how long the interview lasts how many faculty members you meet whether it is open or closed file or what is asked. On a public applicant forum one 2026–27 applicant described it as “Virtual only consists of an interview and a presentation session.” Is the Pitt dental interview in person or virtual? Pitt s DMD pages don
t say. They mention a tour of the facilities and Visit Days for applicants selected for interviews. On a public applicant forum one applicant invited on 18 August 2026 described their interview as “Virtual only ” and the forum s invite tracker (compiled by a volunteer from applicants reports) lists Pitt s interviews as virtual in 2025–26 and 2026–27. The virtual interview and in-person bench test on Pitt s website are for its International Advanced Standing Program not the four-year DMD program you apply to through AADSAS. Go by your invitation. Does Pitt require CASPer or Kira for dental school? Pitt s DMD admissions pages its Essential Program Standards and the dental school s pages in the 2026–27 catalog don t mention CASPer Acuity Insights Kira or any similar assessment. What Pitt asks for is AADSAS a $75 supplemental fee its GPA DAT prerequisite and letter requirements and if you are invited a personal interview. What GPA and DAT
do I need for Pitt dental school? Pitt requires a minimum total GPA of 3.2 “including overall GPA science GPA and prerequisite GPA ” and a minimum DAT Academic Average of 410 which it labels “(Formerly 19)”; it prefers at least 390 in each subsection. Both are on the 200–600 scale and Pitt calls them “minimum guidelines; competitive applicants typically exceed these thresholds.” If you ve taken the DAT more than once Pitt considers the attempt with the highest Academic Average and doesn t superscore subsections. Its admissions pages don t publish its entering class s averages. When is Pitt s dental school application deadline? October 31 2026. Pitt asks you to apply through AADSAS by then and your DAT scores may be no more than three years old on that date. Its FAQ says “we strongly suggest applying prior to September ” and Pitt gives consideration “only to those candidates who have submitted completed AADSAS applications and fees.”
AADSAS itself stays open until February 5 2027 but ADEA says it won t send your application to a school if AADSAS receives it after that school s deadline. Does Pitt dental school accept out-of-state applicants? Yes. Pitt says “There are no residency requirements for either application or admission.” Tuition differs Pitt s estimated 2026–27 budget lists $58 690 a year in its in-state (“PA”) column and $74 592 out of state. Federal Stafford loans are available only to US citizens and permanent residents. When does Pitt send acceptances? Pitt s rolling admissions begin on the earliest acceptance date dental schools agree on and continue until the class is filled. Its admissions page still gives the 2024 date (December 13th); ADEA lists December 15 2026 as this cycle s date. Pitt notifies applicants “initially by phone followed by written acceptance and offers of admission ” and because seats fill in the order $2 000 deposits arrive send
yours as soon as you can if you re admitted. On a public applicant forum one applicant who interviewed on 2 December 2025 wrote on 15 December that they had been told they would hear back on the 15th but hadn t heard anything all day. Does Pitt require shadowing for dental school? Pitt s admissions pages set no number of shadowing hours and Pitt says it “does not provide shadowing opportunities at the School or with local dentists ” recommending your family dentist instead. But at the interview Pitt expects “evidence of personal exposure to the field of dentistry ” and it advises reapplicants to extend their commitment “to volunteering and shadowing within the profession.” Come with specific experiences you can describe.
