UAB Dental School Interview: DMD 2026-27
UAB School of Dentistry DMD guide from its own pages: an Admissions Committee interview, virtual at least early on, the Oct 31 deadline and Dec 15 offers.
UAB invites applicants whose credentials indicate they may qualify to interview with its Admissions Committee, virtually at least early in the cycle, and its AADSAS deadline is October 31, 2026. Here is what UAB publishes, what applicants report, and how to prepare. return ( <> UAB DMD Requirements and Admissions Figures The University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Dentistry calls itself "Alabama's dental school," committed "to improving oral health first in our state, and then within our nation and worldwide." Its DMD, accredited by the ADA's Commission on Dental Accreditation, is a four-year program at a Carnegie R1 research university, and this cycle's class, which UAB welcomes as the Class of 2031, starts on July 5, 2027, according to its incoming-students page. You apply through AADSAS by October 31, 2026, and UAB requests a supplemental application from all Alabama applicants and from out-of-state applicants whose AADSAS
applications "indicate they can be given serious consideration." The UAB pages we read include no class profile. Its FAQ, which is undated, gives these figures: Question in UAB's FAQ. UAB's answer (undated). How many people apply each year?. Around 1,400. How many people are accepted each year?. Approximately 84. What kind of GPA does the average accepted applicant present?. Typically 3.78 overall, 3.72 science. What is the average DAT score?. Typically around 21 Academic Average and 20 Total Science on the old 1–30 scale, and 440 Academic Average and 420 Survey of Natural Sciences on the 200–600 scale. Are out-of-state residents considered?. Yes: “About 30% of our incoming class are out of state students”. "Approximately 84" counts acceptances each year; none of the UAB pages we read gives the size of an entering class. UAB publishes counts, not an acceptance rate, and we don't compute one. Which DAT scale are these on? Both. UAB's FAQ
says the average is "around 21 Academic Average. 20 Total Science (old scoring) and 440 Academic Average, 420 Survey of Natural Sciences (new scoring)," and links the ADA's concordance table. The two-digit figures are on the old 1–30 scale; the three-digit ones are on the 200–600 scale the DAT has used since 1 March 2025. In the ADA's table, an old Academic Average of 21 converts to 440, as UAB has it. The table has no "Total Science" column; UAB pairs its old Total Science with the new Survey of Natural Sciences, and the table converts an old Survey of Natural Sciences score of 20 to 430, not 420 (420 is the table's figure for an old Academic Average of 20), and UAB doesn't say how it arrived at its new-scale figures. If you compare your own Survey of Natural Sciences score with UAB's, 430 is the stricter comparison; these are typical averages, not minimums or targets. Since 1 March 2025 the ADA has reported every DAT score to AADSAS
on the 200–600 scale, older attempts converted. UAB's DMD pages we read publish no minimum GPA or DAT score. In state or out of state? UAB's How to Apply page says "Preference is given to bona fide residents of Alabama who apply for admission to the School of Dentistry. However, applications are considered from all students who have superior academic records." Its FAQ says "As a public state institution, UAB SOD gives preference to in-state applicants," and "About 30% of our incoming class are out of state students." Out of state? How UAB decides residency. Every Alabama applicant is asked for the supplemental application; out-of-state applicants are asked when their AADSAS applications "indicate they can be given serious consideration." UAB decides residency "at the point of admission," and "The state of legal residence listed in AADSAS will be utilized to determine official residency." You declare or confirm it twice, in AADSAS and on
UAB's supplemental application. If you are in Alabama "solely or primarily for educational purposes (as demonstrated by registering for a full-time course load within the last 12 months)," UAB says you "will not be eligible for resident classification, regardless of the length of time in Alabama." Your residency status is included in the official interview invitation email, and UAB says "Students may appeal the residency decision" through its residency reclassification application. Whatever your state, "Only U.S. citizens and permanent residents are considered for admission." Prerequisite coursework Course. Semester hours. What UAB specifies. Biology. 12. General biology or zoology; additional upper-level human or animal biology courses, such as cell biology, physiology, histology, human anatomy or microbiology, are recommended. Chemistry. 16. 8 hours of general inorganic chemistry “which includes qualitative analysis and laboratory
work” and 8 hours of organic chemistry “with laboratory work”; biochemistry is “strongly recommended”. Physics. 8. Mechanics, heat, light, sound and electricity, “with appropriate laboratory work, should be included in the courses”. Mathematics. 6. Analytic geometry and differential and integral calculus are recommended. Non-science courses. 30. English (six semester hours) and courses in the social sciences and humanities are “recommended strongly” to meet it; physical education and military science don't count. Course age: "All required courses must be taken within the last 5 years." UAB's admissions page says it twice. Grades: "Pass/Fail grades are accepted but standard letter grades are preferred," and UAB "will honor online courses and pass/fail courses due to the COVID-19 changes in instruction and grading." The UAB pages we read state no minimum grade. Where to study: "It is strongly recommended that students complete the last
year of predental study at 4-year institution. This is preferred but not required. Extenuating circumstances will be considered." A degree: asked whether three college years are enough, UAB's FAQ answers "Technically yes. However, competitive applicants are earning or have earned an undergraduate degree." Coursework outside the US: UAB says applicants educated at a college or university not regionally accredited in the US "should complete a minimum of 24 credits in biomedical sciences (biology, chemistry, physics, and/or math) at a U.S. accredited institution" and submit a course-by-course evaluation from a NACES.org evaluation service. Hand skills: "Courses to enhance manual dexterity (sculpting, painting, etc.) also are encouraged." The DAT: required. UAB asks each applicant "to request that test results be sent to the UAB School of Dentistry Admissions Committee," and says "DAT test scores must be taken within the last 3 years." Its
FAQ adds, "Most students take the DAT during their Junior year of college," and recommends working with your advisor to determine the best time. Letters, through AADSAS: "We will accept 4 letters of recommendation uploaded to your AADSAS application": "Two letters minimum from instructors that taught you in a science course, but no more than three," "One letter from a dentist that you have shadowed," and "One letter of your choice" (from a pre-health committee, a pre-health advisor, a supervisor, a club or organization sponsor or a research professor, for example). Shadowing: "UAB does not have a required number of shadowing hours," but "it is very important that an applicant understands first hand what they will do as a dentist." "Shadowing should consist primarily of shadowing general dentists. Many recent applicants seem to shadow 50-100 hours, some do more. Massive numbers of hours are not needed for a competitive application." UAB
says shadowing and volunteer hours "will be looked at on a case-by-case basis and will focus on consistency of experience rather than accumulation of hours." Asked whether you need a job in a dental office to be considered, its FAQ says "No." Technical standards: UAB says applicants should review them, and lists them under "Before you apply." All students must be able to meet them "with or without reasonable accommodation," and they include being able to operate "high and low speed dental instruments within a space of less than one millimeter." CASPer or Kira? Not on UAB's pages, but applicants report a Kira. UAB's DMD admissions pages, its FAQ, its technical standards and the other School of Dentistry pages we read don't mention CASPer, Acuity Insights, Kira or any similar assessment; they describe one supplemental application, with a $75 fee. Applicants on a public forum report a Kira, though. In the forum's UAB thread for 2025–26,
four applicants wrote between 28 July and 3 December 2025 that they had completed or received a Kira, two of them listing their application complete date as "supplemental and Kira completed." In this cycle's thread, one in-state applicant wrote on 20 July 2026 of a "Phase 1 supplemental submission confirmation" and asked about a "Phase 2 supplemental (Kira) interview invitation"; another in-state applicant wrote on 24 July that they had "completed phase 1." On 11 August both posted that they had received a Kira invitation ("i just received my kira invite," the second wrote). If UAB emails you a Kira link, complete it by the date it gives, and ask dentaladmissions@uab.edu if anything is unclear. To confirm anything here, email dentaladmissions@uab.edu or call (205) 934-3387, the contacts UAB gives for its Student Admissions and Services office. For course questions, UAB says your pre-health advisor "can best assist." The UAB Interview:
What the School Says By invitation, on your credentials. "Applicants whose credentials indicate they may qualify for admission will be invited for an interview with the Admissions Committee." With the Admissions Committee. That is all UAB says about who interviews you. Its pages don't say how many committee members you will meet, how long the interview lasts, whether they will have read your application, or what they ask. Virtual, at least at first. UAB's How to Apply page, which carries this cycle's dates, says "Interviews will be conducted virtually, at least in the beginning of the cycle." It doesn't say what happens later in the cycle or name a video platform. The same sentence was on the page during the 2024–25 and 2025–26 cycles (archived copies from October 2024 and May, September and November 2025), and last cycle's applicant reports describe in-person interviews (below). By email, with your residency. "Applicants’ residency
status is included in the official interview invitation email." Residency sets your tuition, and UAB describes how to ask for a review or appeal. Step four of UAB's application path. UAB's admissions page numbers the steps: "Apply through AADSAS," "Submit required materials," "Complete supplemental application if invited," "Interview if selected" and "Receive admissions decision through AADSAS." What UAB assesses. Its technical standards say "Compassion, integrity, empathy, interpersonal skills, interest, and motivation are all personal qualities that will be assessed throughout the admission and educational processes." Its FAQ says "Academics are very important" and that UAB "uses a holistic application evaluation process that includes non-academic as well" (the answer stops there on the page). Decisions through AADSAS. "Applicants will be notified of acceptance or rejection via the AADSAS website," and "All application status updates
are communicated via AADSAS, not the School of Dentistry." December 15, 2026 is UAB SOD Offer Day. Other interviews on UAB's pages. UAB's pages describe interviews for other programs too. The Early Dental School Acceptance Program (EDSAP), for high school seniors admitted to UAB as first-time freshmen, says "Students selected for interviews will receive an invitation by email in mid-January." The D.M.D./Ph.D. program asks applicants under consideration for its own supplemental application, and "Applicants who qualify for admission will be invited for a personal interview with the Admissions Committee." The Board of Dental Scholarships, open to "D1-D4 dental students," interviews selected candidates in February and August. UAB doesn't explain how any of these relate to the DMD interview. This guide covers the DMD interview for AADSAS applicants. What applicants report These come from a public applicant forum and its invite tracker, which
a volunteer compiles from applicants' reports. They are not UAB's words: This cycle (2026–27): the tracker, last updated 25 September 2026, lists UAB's first invitations on 24 August 2026 and a first interview date of 31 August, with interviews reported both in person and virtual. In the forum's UAB thread for this cycle, two in-state applicants posted on 11 August that they had received a Kira invitation. As of 8 October 2026, no one in that thread had posted an interview invitation, so it neither confirms nor contradicts the tracker. Last cycle (2025–26): the tracker, last updated 22 October 2025, listed first invitations on 24 July 2025 and a first interview date of 25 August, in person. In the forum's UAB thread, the earliest invitation post came from an out-of-state applicant invited by email on 28 July, who listed an in-person interview on 8 September, and an in-state applicant invited by email on 29 September listed an in-person
interview on 3 October. They are the only two posts that describe the setting, and both match the tracker. UAB's How to Apply page said then, as it does now, that interviews "will be conducted virtually, at least in the beginning of the cycle" (archived copy of 14 September 2025), so go by your invitation. Later interviews: on 27 October 2025, one applicant wrote that their interview was "on nov 3," and on 3 December another wrote, "I submitted my kira in mid-October, and I received my invitation on Nov 10." Asked on 20 November, "does anyone know if UAB does post December interviews?", another forum member replied three days later, "They don't usually." Offer Day: on 15 December 2025, one out-of-state applicant posted, "I’m OOS and got a call 40 min ago." Five others wrote that day that they had been waitlisted, and a sixth replied, "Same :/". UAB's FAQ says "Additional offers may be given after that date to complete the D1 class." The
format: no post in either thread describes the interview itself: how many interviewers, how long, whether they had read the application, or what was asked. The forum's separate interview-feedback survey, which pools 48 reports from 14 years, has 98% of them describing an open-file interview and an average length of 21 minutes. It can't speak for this cycle, and UAB publishes neither. Our 2026–27 interview tracker sets UAB's row beside every other US and Puerto Rico school on the forum's tracker. What UAB doesn't publish. When interviews run, how long they last, how many committee members you will meet, whether they have read your application, what is asked, which platform is used, whether interviews later in the cycle move in person, and anything about a Kira. Because UAB says only that you will interview "with the Admissions Committee," prepare a clear, specific account of your path, your motivation and your experiences that works
whether or not whoever interviews you has read your file, and practice it on camera. Practice Your UAB Answers Out Loud. UAB interviews by invitation, with its Admissions Committee, and says interviews will be virtual at least early in the cycle. UAB's 2026–27 Admissions Timeline UAB's How to Apply page gives this cycle's dates with their years, and its incoming-students page gives the first dates for the Class of 2031: When. What UAB says. May 12, 2026. “Application opened in AADSAS on May 12, 2026. Students should initiate applications as early as possible.”. After you apply through AADSAS, if UAB invites you (via AADSAS). Complete UAB's supplemental application, which it requests from “All Alabama applicants and those out-of-state residents whose AADSAS
applications indicate they can be given serious consideration”; the fee is $75, non-refundable, and UAB says to pay it only once you have that invitation. October 31, 2026. “Last date for applications to be submitted through AADSAS”; “Applications received by AADSAS after October 31, 2026, cannot be considered for admission to the incoming first-year class”. November 15, 2026. “Last date for all supplementary/remaining materials and deposit to be submitted to UAB”. December 15, 2026. UAB SOD Offer Day; its FAQ adds, “Additional offers may be given after that date to complete the D1 class”. If you are approved for admission (no due date published; see the November 15 note below). A $1,000 deposit to “UAB” reserves your place; it is credited to your account at registration and non-refundable unless the Admissions Committee revokes admission. April 16, 2027. Welcome Day for the Class of 2031: “Meet classmates, connect with faculty and
staff, and begin your transition into dental school.”. July 5, 2027. “First day of dental school,” on UAB's incoming-students page (its 2026–27 academic calendar lists July 5, “pending UAB Holiday schedule,” as the start of the fall term for second- to fourth-year students and gives no first-year date); plan on July 5 and confirm your start date with dentaladmissions@uab.edu. UAB gives no dates for supplemental invitations, interview invitations or interviews. Reapplicants "must file new and complete applications through AADSAS, as well as an updated supplemental application," and pay the non-refundable fees again. UAB's tuition page still shows 2025–26: $34,862 a year for Alabama residents and $81,258 for non-residents, with next year's figures "posted in early July." To visit, UAB says to email Student Admissions and Services to schedule a tour. November 15: what is due, and which deposit?. UAB's supplemental section says the
supplemental application, "along with all transcripts, letters of recommendation, and other specified documents, should be received by the Admissions Office no later than November 15 of the year for which admission is sought," which read literally would be 2027; its dated list says November 15, 2026, so go by that. The dated list also names a deposit, while UAB's deposit section describes a $1,000 deposit required of "Applicants who are approved for admission," and offers start on December 15. UAB doesn't say which deposit is due by November 15. Have everything UAB asks of you, including any payment, in by November 15, 2026, and confirm with dentaladmissions@uab.edu. Pay the $75 supplemental fee only "if you have received an invitation to complete the supplemental application via AADSAS." Two routes that start with your AADSAS application. The Rural Dental Scholar (RDS) Program "is a separate admissions pathway accessed via the ADEA
AADSAS application system": you indicate on your AADSAS application to UAB that you are applying for it. It is "for Alabama residents only," for applicants who "intend to practice dentistry in a rural community" and who have lived in a rural area for at least eight years or graduated from a rural high school. Applicants "should have a minimum 17 DAT, 3.30 overall undergraduate GPA, and 3.0 BCPM GPA." That 17 is on the old 1–30 scale and UAB doesn't name the section; the ADA's table converts an old 17 to 370 in Academic Average and 380 in Survey of Natural Sciences. Scholars accepted into the program receive "a conditional offer" to UAB. The program begins with a one-year Rural Health Master's program in Tuscaloosa, and to start at UAB in the July after it, scholars must earn at least a 3.5 GPA in the master's and meet the program's other requirements, including shadowing rotations. The Blaze to D.M.D. program, which offers conditional
acceptance to selected students in UAB's Master's in Biomedical & Health Sciences, has "no direct application": its candidates "are identified during the regular UAB SOD admissions cycle," with preference to Alabama residents. "During the application screening, interview, and committee review processes, members of the UAB SOD Admissions Committee will identify suitable applicants," and students who successfully complete all elements of the master's program "will be accepted to the School of Dentistry for the following academic year." Neither page describes a separate interview. What UAB Looks For UAB's technical standards name the personal qualities it assesses: "Compassion, integrity, empathy, interpersonal skills, interest, and motivation are all personal qualities that will be assessed throughout the admission and educational processes." Its admissions page says preparation for dental school "begins with a strong foundation in the
biological and physical sciences, as well as effective communication skills." With its shadowing advice and its focus on Alabama, they make a practical checklist for the interview: Compassion, empathy and integrity: have a specific story for each: a time you put someone else's needs first, understood a person whose situation differed from yours, or did the right thing when it cost you something. UAB's shared values, which its School of Dentistry lists among its foundational principles, include "Act with integrity: Be accountable and always do the right thing." Interest and motivation: UAB says "it is very important that an applicant understands first hand what they will do as a dentist and has the opportunity to interact with various dental professionals," and that shadowing "should consist primarily of shadowing general dentists." Describe what you saw a general dentist do, over time, and what it confirmed for you. Communication with
every patient: the technical standards ask candidates to "communicate effectively and appropriately with patients and/or guardian(s)," to "explain alternative solutions," and to "account for various patient backgrounds and life experiences." UAB says coursework in the social sciences and humanities "can also provide valuable perspectives for working with patients and understanding oral health care." Composure, adaptability and feedback: a candidate and student must be able to "tolerate demanding workloads, effectively function under stress, adapt to changing environments," and a candidate "must accept critical feedback and respond by appropriately modifying behavior." Have an example of each. Calming patients: a candidate "must be able to manage apprehensive patients with a range of moods and behaviors in a tactful, congenial, personal manner so as not to alienate or antagonize them." Think of a time you calmed someone who was
frightened or upset. Problem solving: the technical standards call problem solving "a critical skill demanded of a dentist" and ask candidates "to comprehend three-dimensional relationships." Practice talking through a problem out loud: the options, what you would weigh, and why you would choose one. Hand skills: a candidate must be able to "operate high and low speed dental instruments within a space of less than one millimeter," and UAB encourages "Courses to enhance manual dexterity (sculpting, painting, etc.)." Be ready to describe one activity concretely. Alabama and its communities: UAB gives preference to Alabama residents, says it is committed "to improving oral health first in our state," and says one aim of UAB Dentistry – Dothan "will be to identify, recruit and prepare the next generation of dentists committed to practicing in rural Alabama." If you hope to practice in Alabama, or in a rural or underserved community, be
ready to say where and why. UAB's values make a good ethics checklist. The School of Dentistry lists UAB's shared values among its foundational principles, beside its mission, "To improve oral health for all through collaboration, education, innovation, discovery, and service to patients and communities." The values are "Collaborate: Work as a team for the greater good," "Act with integrity: Be accountable and always do the right thing," "Respect all: Champion diversity and opportunities for all, with civility" and "Excel: Innovate and strive for excellence in everything we do." Its technical standards add "the exercise of good judgment" and "maintenance of patient confidentiality." Measure your answers to ethical questions against these. The best Why UAB material is in its clinics and its research. UAB's DMD page says students begin developing clinical skills early, "progressing from simulation and preclinical training to comprehensive
patient care," and that training "extends across specialty clinics, hospital and community-based settings, and with diverse patient populations throughout Birmingham and at UAB Dentistry locations in Dothan and Decatur (coming in 2027)." "Every week during the academic year," UAB sends third- and fourth-year students to clinics in the community. Research is integrated into the curriculum, "with every student completing and presenting research," and UAB is home to the national administrative base of the National Dental Practice Based Research Network. You can pair the DMD with a Ph.D. (a program expected to take 8 years) or an M.B.A. UAB's 2023–24 course catalog says its faculty consider "four areas of student learning to be critically important. These are clinical care, service, research, and professionalism." Connect one of these to how you want to learn and whom you want to serve. The practice questions below are ours, built on these
criteria. UAB does not publish its interview questions. Internationally trained dentist? UAB's DMD page says its International Dentist Program "offers non-US trained dentists the opportunity to earn a D.M.D. degree from the UAB School of Dentistry and prepare for practice in the United States." UAB does not publish its interview questions; these are practice questions built on
what it says it weighs. You will interview “with the Admissions Committee ” and UAB doesn t say how many committee members you will meet or whether they will have read your application so build a 90-second answer that stands on its who you are the experiences that led you to dentistry and why UAB is the next step. UAB s technical standards list interest and motivation among the personal qualities it let your story show both. Why dentistry? UAB says “it is very important that an applicant understands first hand what they will do as a dentist and has the opportunity to interact with various dental professionals ” and that shadowing “should consist primarily of shadowing general dentists.” Anchor your answer in something specific you saw a general dentist do more than once then say what it confirmed for you. UAB says shadowing and volunteer hours “will focus on consistency of experience rather than accumulation of hours.” Why UAB? Use what
UAB says about its clinical skills from early on “progressing from simulation and preclinical training to comprehensive patient care”; community clinics every week of the academic year for third- and fourth-year students; research “with every student completing and presenting research”; and the option of a Ph.D. or an M.B.A. alongside the DMD. Connect one of them to how you want to learn and whom you want to serve; the location alone is not a reason. Where do you see yourself practicing and why? UAB gives preference to Alabama residents says it is committed “to improving oral health first in our state ” and says one aim of UAB Dentistry – Dothan “will be to identify recruit and prepare the next generation of dentists committed to practicing in rural Alabama.” Name a place you know a need you have seen there and what you would bring to it. If you are from out of state be honest about your plans and what draws you to UAB. Behavioral Tell
me about a time you worked under heavy pressure. UAB s technical standards say a candidate and student must be able to “tolerate demanding workloads effectively function under stress adapt to changing environments.” Keep the setup short show what you did to stay organized and steady and say what you would carry into dental school. Tell me about a time you received critical feedback. UAB s technical standards say a candidate “must accept critical feedback and respond by appropriately modifying behavior.” Name the feedback what you changed and the evidence that it worked. Tell me about a time you helped someone whose background was very different from yours. UAB s technical standards ask candidates to “account for various patient backgrounds and life experiences ” and list compassion and empathy among the qualities UAB assesses. Describe the person and the situation with respect show what you learned by listening and what you did
differently as a result. How have you developed your hand skills? UAB s technical standards require operating “high and low speed dental instruments within a space of less than one millimeter ” and its admissions page encourages “Courses to enhance manual dexterity (sculpting painting etc.).” Describe one activity what you made how long you have done it and what it taught you about precision and patience. Ethical / Scenario A patient is anxious and upset before treatment. How do you handle it? UAB s technical standards say a candidate “must be able to manage apprehensive patients with a range of moods and behaviors in a tactful congenial personal manner so as not to alienate or antagonize them.” Show that you would acknowledge the fear explain each step in plain words agree on a signal to pause and involve your supervising dentist if the patient wants to stop. A friend asks you what was wrong with a patient you both saw in clinic. What
do you do? UAB s technical standards include “maintenance of patient confidentiality.” Decline kindly but firmly explain that patient information stays private and say what you would do if the friend kept asking. Show your reasoning not just the rule. A patient from a rural county can t easily come back for the rest of their treatment. What do you do? UAB sends third- and fourth-year students to community clinics every week of the academic year and says one aim of UAB Dentistry – Dothan “will be to identify recruit and prepare the next generation of dentists committed to practicing in rural Alabama.” Acknowledge the barrier without judgment explore legitimate options such as care at a clinic closer to the patient s home involve your supervising dentist and never lower the standard of care. Show your reasoning; a question like this rarely has a single right answer. You see a classmate cheating on an exam. What do you do? UAB s shared
values which its School of Dentistry lists among its foundational principles include “Act with Be accountable and always do the right thing.” Describe an escalation path from a direct conversation to the proper channels and say why integrity matters when patients trust your license. Submit AADSAS UAB s last date is October 31 “Application opened in AADSAS on May 12 2026. Students should initiate applications as early as possible.” October 31 2026 is UAB s last date for applications submitted through AADSAS and “Applications received by AADSAS after October 31 2026 cannot be considered for admission to the incoming first-year class.” Watch AADSAS for the supplemental invitation and finish by November 15 UAB requests its supplemental application from all Alabama applicants and from out-of-state applicants whose AADSAS applications “indicate they can be given serious consideration.” Pay the $75 non-refundable fee only “if you have received
an invitation to complete the supplemental application via AADSAS ” and have the supplemental all remaining materials and any payment UAB asks for in by November 15 2026 the date its list gives for “all supplementary/remaining materials and deposit”. UAB says “Applicants whose credentials indicate they may qualify for admission will be invited for an interview with the Admissions Committee ” and “Interviews will be conducted virtually at least in the beginning of the cycle.” The interview is the fourth step on UAB s numbered application path after the supplemental application which UAB requests from all Alabama applicants and from
out-of-state applicants whose AADSAS applications “indicate they can be given serious consideration.” UAB s pages don t say how many committee members you will meet how long the interview lasts whether they have read your application or what is asked and no post in a public applicant forum s 2025–26 or 2026–27 UAB threads describes it. UAB s technical standards say compassion integrity empathy interpersonal skills interest and motivation “will be assessed throughout the admission and educational processes.” Is the UAB dental interview virtual or in person? UAB s How to Apply page which carries this cycle s dates says “Interviews will be conducted virtually at least in the beginning of the cycle ” and doesn t say what happens later in the cycle or name a platform. The same sentence was on the page during the 2024–25 and 2025–26 cycles (archived copies). Applicants report a the forum s invite tracker which a volunteer compiles from
applicants reports lists UAB s 2026–27 interviews as both in person and virtual with a first interview date of 31 August 2026 and the two 2025–26 applicants in the forum s UAB thread who described the setting both reported in-person interviews. Go by your invitation. Does UAB use the MMI? No UAB page we read uses the term or describes UAB describes “an interview with the Admissions Committee.” No post in a public applicant forum s 2025–26 or 2026–27 UAB threads describes an MMI or the interview s format. UAB doesn t say how the interview is structured so prepare to discuss your path your motivation and your experiences in any format. Does UAB require CASPer or Kira for dental school? UAB s DMD admissions pages its FAQ its technical standards and the other School of Dentistry pages we read don t mention CASPer Acuity Insights Kira or any similar assessment. Applicants on a public forum report a Kira four applicants in its 2025–26 UAB
thread wrote between 28 July and 3 December 2025 that they had completed or received one two of them listing “supplemental and Kira completed ” and two in-state applicants in this cycle s thread posted on 11 August 2026 that they had received a Kira invitation. If UAB emails you a Kira link complete it by the date it gives and ask dentaladmissions@uab.edu if you re unsure. What GPA and DAT do I need for UAB dental school? UAB s DMD pages publish no minimum GPA or DAT score. Its undated FAQ says the average accepted applicant typically presents a 3.78 overall and a 3.72 science GPA and that the average DAT is “around 21 Academic Average. 20 Total Science (old scoring) and 440 Academic Average 420 Survey of Natural Sciences (new scoring).” In the ADA s concordance table which UAB s FAQ links an old Academic Average of 21 converts to 440 as UAB has it but the table which has no “Total Science” column converts an old Survey of Natural
Sciences score of 20 to 430 not 420 (UAB pairs its old Total Science with the new Survey of Natural Sciences) and UAB doesn t say how it arrived at its new-scale figures. These are averages not minimums or targets; if you compare your own Survey of Natural Sciences score with UAB s 430 is the stricter comparison. UAB says DAT test scores “must be taken within the last 3 years.” Does UAB accept out-of-state applicants? Yes. UAB says “Preference is given to bona fide residents of Alabama ” but “applications are considered from all students who have superior academic records ” and its FAQ says “About 30% of our incoming class are out of state students.” Out-of-state applicants are asked for the supplemental application when their AADSAS applications “indicate they can be given serious consideration.” UAB decides residency at the point of admission from the state of legal residence in your AADSAS application and students in Alabama “solely
or primarily for educational purposes” (shown by a full-time course load within the last 12 months) “will not be eligible for resident classification regardless of the length of time in Alabama.” Only US citizens and permanent residents are considered. When is the UAB DMD application deadline? October 31 2026 UAB s last date for applications submitted through “Applications received by AADSAS after October 31 2026 cannot be considered for admission to the incoming first-year class.” UAB s AADSAS application opened May 12 2026 and UAB says to start “as early as possible.” November 15 2026 is UAB s “Last date for all supplementary/remaining materials and deposit to be submitted to UAB”; UAB doesn t say which deposit so have any payment it asks for in by then and confirm with dentaladmissions@uab.edu. December 15 2026 is UAB SOD Offer Day. How many shadowing hours does UAB want? “UAB does not have a required number of shadowing hours ” but
“it is very important that an applicant understands first hand what they will do as a dentist.” UAB says shadowing “should consist primarily of shadowing general dentists ” “Many recent applicants seem to shadow 50-100 hours some do more ” and “Massive numbers of hours are not needed for a competitive application.” Shadowing and volunteer hours “will be looked at on a case-by-case basis and will focus on consistency of experience rather than accumulation of hours.” UAB s list of letters includes “One letter from a dentist that you have shadowed ” and asked whether you need a job in a dental office to be considered its FAQ says “No.” UMMC (Mississippi) Dental School Interview Guide (DMD) In Jackson UMMC s pages say its interview session includes multiple mini-interviews with members of its Admissions Committee; setting and schedule are not published.
