MUSC Dental School Interview: DMD 2026-27

MUSC College of Dental Medicine DMD guide from its own pages: two virtual 30-minute faculty interviews, the Dec 15 deadline and a late-May start.

MUSC interviews virtually: its FAQ describes a day with a welcome session, two 30-minute interviews with faculty members, a virtual tour of the Charleston area and a chance to question current students. Here is what MUSC publishes, what applicants report, and how to prepare. return ( <> MUSC DMD Requirements and Class Profile The James B. Edwards College of Dental Medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC), in Charleston, calls itself "South Carolina's only dental college," and it admitted its first class of dental students on September 5, 1967. Its DMD curriculum "consists of 225 credits and is designed to be completed in 11 semesters," and the first year starts in the summer: MUSC's academic calendar lists May 25, 2027 as the day the D1 summer semester begins. You apply through AADSAS and the MUSC Supplemental Application, and the final deadline is December 15, 2026. These are the figures MUSC publishes about who gets

in: Figure. What MUSC publishes. Where. Average cumulative GPA, accepted students. 3.65. DMD page FAQ (undated; no class named). Average science GPA, accepted students. 3.59. DMD page FAQ. Average DAT, accepted students. “20 AA/21 DAT” (old 1–30 scale). DMD page FAQ. Applicants and seats. 1,750 applicants for 78 seats in the Class of 2028. Facts & Figures page. Average class size. 75 DMD students per class. MUSC's virtual campus tour. Where first-year students come from. 74% in state, 26% out of state (no class named). Facts & Figures page. Which DAT scale are 20 and 21 on?. The old 1–30 scale: no score on the 200–600 scale the DAT has used since 1 March 2025 can be 20 or 21. MUSC's FAQ labels the 20 "AA" (the Academic Average) but doesn't say which section "21 DAT" refers to, which class the averages describe, or whether any new-scale scores went into them. It gives no new-scale equivalent, and we don't convert one. The MUSC pages we

read publish no minimum GPA or DAT score. If your DAT is on the new scale, ask oesadmis@musc.edu how MUSC reads it. In state or out of state? MUSC's FAQ answers: "As the only dental school in South Carolina, we look for qualified in-state students as well as highly qualified candidates from near and far." Its Facts & Figures page says 74% of enrolled first-year students come from in state and 26% from out of state, without naming a class. MUSC's central admissions page, which covers all of its programs, adds: "MUSC is a state-assisted institution and preference is awarded to applicants who are residents of South Carolina. Therefore, while non-residents are considered for admission, superior credentials are usually necessary for acceptance." Out of state? Know these numbers. MUSC publishes no acceptance rate, and we don't compute one: its Facts & Figures page counts applicants and seats for one class, the Class of 2028, not offers, and

none of the pages we read splits applicants or offers by residency. This cycle's applicants join the class MUSC's calendar calls CDM 2031. Residency also sets your tuition: MUSC's tuition table for the 2026–27 academic year lists first-year fall tuition of $13,099 a semester in state and $27,903 out of state. Prerequisite coursework Course. Credits. General chemistry (general or introductory college-level). 8. Organic chemistry. 8. Biology or zoology (general or introductory college-level). 8. Physics (general or introductory college-level). 8. Science electives (upper-level natural sciences, such as microbiology, biochemistry, anatomy, physiology or genetics). 8. English (introductory college-level, such as reading and composition, rhetoric or literature). 6. Mathematics (college-level, such as college algebra, statistics or calculus). 6. Labs: for each of the five science requirements, "Each science course must include the

corresponding laboratory credit." Where and when: from "a regionally accredited U.S. institution prior to matriculation." "Required coursework may include coursework taken at a community or technical college and/or offered in an online format." MUSC's DMD page states no minimum grade for prerequisites. AP credit: "This program does accept AP credits to fulfill prerequisite requirements." If your AP credits aren't listed individually on your transcript, MUSC says you can order a College Board score report and have it sent to MUSC. A bachelor's degree: "Strong preference is given to applicants who have, or will have completed, four years of college coursework and have earned a bachelor's degree at a regionally accredited US institution prior to matriculation." At least three years of "exemplary college work, including an exceptional science GPA and DAT scores," may be considered only "In extremely rare circumstances." The DAT: "Your

official U.S. DAT scores must be less than five years old." MUSC doesn't accept Canadian DAT scores, and it recommends taking the DAT early "to allow ample time for official scores to be received or retested if necessary." Scores go through AADSAS; MUSC's test-score page lists code 85 for the DMD. Letters: "A minimum of three individual letters of recommendation or one confidential committee letter are required," through AADSAS. MUSC recommends letters "from those most familiar with the applicant (i.e., faculty member, dentist, leader or mentor in a volunteer organization)." Transcripts: through AADSAS; "Transcripts for coursework in progress at the time of application must be sent to MUSC upon matriculation into the program." Shadowing: MUSC's DMD page doesn't mention shadowing or a number of hours. Minimum abilities: MUSC lists abilities it says "are needed by all students at MUSC," among them "Ability to communicate effectively,"

"Ability to adapt to a variety of patient/client situations, including crises" and "Ability to perform duties while under stress." Reapplying: "Applicants that have applied in previous years must submit new ADEA AADSAS and MUSC supplemental applications and should update all application materials for each new admissions cycle." CASPer or Kira?. MUSC's DMD page, the page for its DMD/PhD program, MUSC's central admissions pages and the dental pages of its Academic Bulletin don't mention CASPer, Acuity Insights, Kira or any similar assessment. That isn't the same as saying MUSC doesn't require one: its pages simply don't say either way. What they do ask for is the AADSAS application, with your transcripts, DAT scores and letters, the MUSC Supplemental Application and, if you are selected, the interview. If you're unsure, ask oesadmis@musc.edu. Our CASPer guide names the dental programs Acuity Insights' directory lists as requiring it, and

puts MUSC among the schools whose own pages say nothing either way. To confirm anything, MUSC's dental pages send prospective students and applicants to its Office of Enrollment Management, "the first point of contact for applicants and prospective students": oesadmis@musc.edu or 843-792-4892. The MUSC Interview: What the College Says Virtual. Asked "What interview style does MUSC use and what is the interview day like?", MUSC's FAQ answers: "Interviews are conducted virtually." It doesn't name the video platform. The FAQ is undated and names no cycle, but the page it sits on lists this cycle's application dates. Two 30-minute interviews with faculty members. "Applicants then have two 30-minute interviews with faculty members." MUSC doesn't say how many faculty members sit in each interview, whether you meet different people in the two, whether they have read your application, or what they ask. The rest of the day. "The day begins with

a welcome session, an overview of MUSC's campus and an explanation of the day's events." The interviews follow, and "There is also a virtual tour of the Charleston area and an opportunity to ask questions of current students." MUSC doesn't say whether any part of the day besides the interviews is evaluated. By selection, after review. "Once both applications are complete and the ADEA AADSAS application has been verified, your application will be reviewed. Selected applicants will be contacted for an interview." MUSC doesn't publish when interviews run or how invitations arrive. Who decides. Complete applications are "reviewed by the admissions committee," and MUSC's central admissions page says "Decisions regarding eligibility for admission and offers of admission are made solely through each College." MUSC's dental pages don't say how much the interview counts. Two interviews: tell your story twice. Two 30-minute interviews add up to

an hour with faculty (our arithmetic). Because MUSC doesn't say whether your interviewers have read your file, be ready to introduce yourself and tell your story with specific examples in each interview, and keep it consistent. Plan a few questions for the current students, too: the FAQ says the day includes "an opportunity to ask questions of current students." What applicants report These come from a public applicant forum and its invite tracker, which a volunteer compiles from applicants' reports. They are not MUSC's words: This cycle (2026–27): the tracker, last updated 25 September 2026, lists MUSC's first invitations on 6 August and a first interview date of 11 September, virtual. Last cycle (2025–26): the tracker, last updated 22 October 2025, listed MUSC's first invitations on 12 August 2025 and a first interview date of 5 September, virtual. Both cycles' entries agree with MUSC's FAQ that the interviews are virtual. The forum's

MUSC threads add nothing about the interview itself: the 2025–26 thread holds its opening post and one question, posted on 5 January 2026 and unanswered there, asking when MUSC stops sending interview invitations, and as of 7 October 2026 the 2026–27 thread held only its opening post. No one in either thread reported an invitation, an interview or a decision. Our 2026–27 interview tracker sets MUSC's reported dates beside those of every other school on the forum's tracker. What MUSC doesn't publish. When interviews run, how invitations arrive, the video platform, how many faculty members sit in each interview, whether they have read your application, what is asked, how the interview is weighed, and when decisions follow. Because your two interviews are separate 30-minute conversations with faculty, prepare a clear, specific account of your motivation and experiences that works for any interviewer. MUSC's 2026–27 Admissions Timeline When. What MUSC says. May 12, 2026. AADSAS opened (“AADSAS opens: May 12, 2026”). July 1, 2026. “MUSC opens: July 1, 2026,” in the application timeline on MUSC's DMD page. As early as possible. Submit AADSAS: after your fee and official transcripts arrive, “it usually takes four to six weeks to process and verify the application”. As soon as you can. Submit the MUSC Supplemental Application; your AADSAS application doesn't have to be verified first. Friday, October 30, 2026. Dental Day, 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., for pre-dental advisors, students and organizations: dental faculty, students and admissions counselors, and a student panel

(registration on MUSC's Recruitment Events page). December 15, 2026. “Final deadline”: your AADSAS application must be verified, and you must be marked complete, which takes both applications “received in full”. After December 15. MUSC's FAQ: “You may submit application updates after the deadline; however, you must already be marked complete by the deadline”. After an offer. A $485 matriculation fee “upon applicant acceptance”; MUSC's central admissions page expects acceptance “within four weeks of the offer unless otherwise stipulated by the college”. Before you start. Every prerequisite finished (“prior to matriculation”); transcripts for coursework in progress go to MUSC when you matriculate. May 25, 2027. D1 summer semester begins (MUSC's academic calendar; its dates are “subject to change”). May 26–27, 2027. “D1 Orientation – CDM 2031” (the same calendar). MUSC publishes no interview window and no date for its first offers. Its

application fee is $95 per application, in its fee table for the 2026–27 academic year. Guided tours for prospective dental students run in June and July, on Mondays and Wednesdays at noon, so this year's have passed; MUSC also offers a virtual tour and materials for a self-guided one. December 15 means verified and complete. MUSC's DMD page says "The application must be verified by the application deadline to be eligible for review," and its FAQ, asked about sending materials after the deadline, says "You may submit application updates after the deadline; however, you must already be marked complete by the deadline." AADSAS verification "usually takes four to six weeks" after your fee and official transcripts arrive, so for AADSAS to verify your application by December 15, they need to reach AADSAS by about November 3 (six weeks before) to November 17 (four weeks before). That is our arithmetic from MUSC's estimate, not a MUSC date.

Earlier is better: MUSC reviews an application once it is complete and verified, and selected applicants are contacted for an interview after that review. A late-May start: two MUSC pages to read together. MUSC's FAQ says that for D1 students "the summer semester begins online at the end of May and in-person orientation is on the first business Monday in June," which in 2027 would be June 7 (our arithmetic). Its academic calendar for summer 2027 lists "May 25 – D1 Summer Semester Begins" and "May 26–27 – D1 Orientation – CDM 2031," without saying whether that orientation is in person. Plan to be available from May 25, 2027, and confirm the in-person dates with oesadmis@musc.edu. What MUSC Looks For MUSC's dental pages don't list interview criteria. MUSC's central admissions page says its programs weigh "the applicant's previous academic success, work previously completed, and cognitive and non-cognitive traits necessary and desirable in

health professionals," and gives examples: "leadership, compassion, teamwork, creativity, curiosity." With the DMD program's own values and goals and the abilities MUSC expects of every student, they make the best checklist for the interview: Compassion: the DMD program's first value is "Compassion: We act with kindness, empathy and dignity." MUSC says its dedicated clinic for patients with special health care needs is known for preparing tomorrow's dentists to be "confident in caring for patients with a wide range of abilities." Teamwork: "Collaboration: We achieve common goals through teamwork and partnerships." The program aims to prepare graduates to "Demonstrate commitment to ethical practice, societal responsibility and interprofessional collaboration in both patient care and scholarly endeavors," and first-year students take an interprofessional foundations course. Integrity: "Integrity: We do the right thing and commit to

accountability in words, actions and use of resources." Graduates should be able to "Demonstrate cultural competence, ethical integrity and reflective practice in all clinical and research activities, fostering trust and equitable care across diverse patient populations." Communication: MUSC says its integrated approach "prepares students to think critically, communicate effectively with patients, and deliver high-quality oral healthcare in a variety of practice environments," and the abilities it expects of all students include "Ability to communicate effectively." Composure: the same list includes "Ability to adapt to a variety of patient/client situations, including crises" and "Ability to perform duties while under stress." Have an example of each. Leadership: the program aims to prepare graduates to "Assume leadership roles in diverse professional contexts through sustained scholarly and clinical excellence," and its mission is "To

develop transformative leaders and oral health providers to improve wellness." South Carolina: MUSC's history page says "As South Carolina's only dental school, the MUSC College of Dental Medicine is an important source of dentists in a state that is currently under-served in terms of dental care. About 75 percent of our graduates have chosen to remain in South Carolina." Its Pre-Dental Academy, run with South Carolina AHEC, aims to raise "the acceptance, retention, and graduation rates of students from rural and medically underserved in healthcare areas" in its dental program. If you are from out of state, have a real answer to why MUSC. Curiosity: one of the traits MUSC's central admissions page names, and the DMD builds in research: in the third year, students "complete two research courses, culminating in a poster presentation at the college's Scholars Day." The best Why MUSC material is in its clinics and its digital dentistry.

Students start in the clinic in the first year, "assisting and observing," spend "two half-days per week in the clinics," and don't have to find their own patients: "The college supplies patients for student training through our screening clinic." MUSC calls itself "a leader in digital dentistry": students have 24/7 access to its Simulation Lab to practice CAD/CAM skills, and in its Innovation Lab "students can participate in all steps of producing teeth and implant-supported restorations using digital technologies." Its Facts & Figures page says CAD/CAM instruction, with hands-on use of 3D scanners, begins in the fall of the first year. In the fourth year, students "complete two weeks of community-based care rotations throughout the state," in places including Greenville, Myrtle Beach and Summerville, and "Over 50 students participate in international and domestic volunteer mission trips annually." Its electives include Safety Net

Dental Leadership and Poverty & Health Consumerism. Connect one of these to how you want to learn and whom you want to serve. The practice questions below are ours, built on these criteria. MUSC does not publish its interview questions. Drawn to research? MUSC's Dental Scientist Training Program (DMD/PhD) uses the same AADSAS and supplemental applications and lists the same dates; its page says selected applicants "will be contacted for an interview" and describes no separate interview format. Internationally trained dentist? MUSC's FAQ says "The D.M.D. program does not accept transfers into the program. Applicants must start the program from the beginning," and its program finder lists no advanced-standing program for internationally trained dentists. ); }; export default MUSCDentalSchoolInterview; musc-dental-school-interview MUSC James B. MUSC does not publish its interview questions; these are practice questions built on what it says it weighs. Its FAQ describes “two 30-minute interviews with faculty members” and doesn t say whether your interviewers have read your application so build a 90-second

answer that stands on its who you are the experiences that led you to dentistry and why MUSC is the next step. You may give it twice so keep it consistent. Why dentistry? MUSC s central admissions page says its programs weigh “previous academic success work previously completed and cognitive and non-cognitive traits necessary and desirable in health professionals.” Anchor your answer in something specific you saw or did in a dental setting then say what it confirmed for you about the work. Why MUSC? Use what MUSC says about its clinic from the first year “two half-days per week ” with patients supplied through its screening clinic; CAD/CAM instruction from the fall of the first year and an Innovation Lab where students can take part in the whole digital workflow; two weeks of community-based rotations around South Carolina in the fourth year; and a dedicated clinic for patients with special health care needs. Connect one of them to how

you want to learn and whom you want to serve; Charleston alone is not a reason. Where do you see yourself practicing? MUSC s history page calls the college “an important source of dentists in a state that is currently under-served in terms of dental care” and says “About 75 percent of our graduates have chosen to remain in South Carolina.” Be honest and specific about where you want to practice and why; if you re from out of state say what draws you to MUSC without promising what you haven t thought through. Behavioral Tell me about a time you worked on a team toward a shared goal. One of the DMD program s values is “ We achieve common goals through teamwork and partnerships ” and MUSC s central admissions page names teamwork among the traits its programs consider. Keep the setup short show what you did and how you kept the team working and say what the team achieved. Describe a leadership role and what you accomplished in it. MUSC s

mission is “To develop transformative leaders and oral health providers to improve wellness ” and its central admissions page lists leadership first among its examples of the traits its programs consider. Pick a time you took responsibility for an outcome not just a title and say what changed because of you. Tell me about a time you were under pressure. How did you handle it? MUSC s minimum abilities which it says “are needed by all students at MUSC ” include “Ability to perform duties while under stress” and “Ability to adapt to a variety of patient/client situations including crises.” Describe a real situation what you did in the moment and what you learned from it. Tell me about your volunteer work. What did it teach you? MUSC recommends letters from those most familiar with you including a “leader or mentor in a volunteer organization ” and its DMD page says “Over 50 students participate in international and domestic volunteer

mission trips annually.” Pick one experience say what you did and for whom and explain how it shaped the dentist you want to be. Ethical / Scenario A patient with special health care needs is anxious and struggling in the chair. What do you do? MUSC has a dedicated clinic for patients with special health care needs which it says is known for preparing tomorrow s dentists to be “confident in caring for patients with a wide range of abilities ” and its first value is “ We act with kindness empathy and dignity.” Show that you would slow down explain each step in plain words involve the patient s caregiver and your supervising dentist and put the patient s dignity first. A patient can t afford the treatment you recommend. What do you do? MUSC says its community-based rotations “emphasize access to care and public health impact” and that some “focus on underserved communities.” Explain the options without judgment consider phased or

alternative treatment and community resources and never lower the standard of care. Show your reasoning; a question like this rarely has a single right answer. You see a classmate cheating on an exam. What do you do? One of the DMD program s values is “ We do the right thing and commit to accountability in words actions and use of resources.” Describe an escalation path from a direct conversation to the proper channels and say why integrity matters when patients will trust your license. A teammate on a group project isn t doing their share. What do you do? MUSC s values include “ We value everyone and their many perspectives to build trust and a sense of belonging.” Talk to your teammate privately first find out what is going on and offer help and involve faculty only if it continues. Show that fairness to the group and respect for the person can go together. Be verified and complete by December 15 MUSC s final deadline is December 15

2026 and “The application must be verified by the application deadline to be eligible for review.” AADSAS verification “usually takes four to six weeks” after your fee and official transcripts arrive so submit AADSAS early and send the MUSC Supplemental Application as soon as you your AADSAS application doesn t have to be verified first. Prepare for two separate conversations with faculty MUSC s FAQ says “Applicants then have two 30-minute interviews with faculty members.” It doesn t say whether your interviewers have read your file so practice introducing yourself and telling your story with specific examples and keep it consistent across both interviews. Set up for a virtual day “Interviews are conducted virtually ” and the day also includes a welcome session an overview of MUSC s campus a virtual tour of the Charleston area and “an opportunity to ask questions of current students.” Test your camera light and sound in advance practice

answering out loud in that setup and bring questions for the students. Have a real answer to Why MUSC MUSC calls itself “South Carolina s only dental college ” says about 75 percent of its graduates have chosen to remain in the state and looks for “qualified in-state students as well as highly qualified candidates from near and far.” Out-of-state applicants especially should connect something specific about MUSC such as its digital dentistry or its community rotations to their own plans. MUSC s FAQ which is undated says “Interviews are conducted virtually.” The

day “begins with a welcome session an overview of MUSC s campus and an explanation of the day s events”; next applicants “have two 30-minute interviews with faculty members ” and “There is also a virtual tour of the Charleston area and an opportunity to ask questions of current students.” MUSC doesn t say how many faculty members sit in each interview whether they have read your application or what is asked. Interviews go to applicants selected after MUSC reviews a complete application with a verified AADSAS. Is the MUSC dental interview virtual or in person? Virtual. MUSC s FAQ says “Interviews are conducted virtually ” and the interview day includes “a virtual tour of the Charleston area.” It doesn t name the video platform. The FAQ is undated but the page it sits on lists this cycle s dates and a public applicant forum s invite tracker which a volunteer compiles from applicants reports lists MUSC s interviews as virtual in both

2025–26 and 2026–27. Does MUSC use the MMI? MUSC s pages describe no MMI. Its FAQ describes “two 30-minute interviews with faculty members” during a virtual interview day and none of the MUSC pages we read mentions stations or a multiple mini interview. Prepare for two conversations with faculty about your motivation your experiences and your judgment. Does MUSC require CASPer or Kira? MUSC s DMD page its DMD/PhD page MUSC s central admissions pages and the dental pages of its Academic Bulletin don t mention CASPer Acuity Insights Kira or any similar assessment so they don t say whether one is required. What they do ask for is the AADSAS application with your transcripts DAT scores and letters the MUSC Supplemental Application and for selected applicants a virtual interview. If you re unsure ask MUSC s Office of Enrollment Management at oesadmis@musc.edu. What GPA and DAT do I need for MUSC dental school? The MUSC pages we read publish

no minimum GPA or DAT score. Its FAQ gives accepted students averages as a 3.65 cumulative GPA a 3.59 science GPA and a DAT of “20 AA/21 DAT ” without naming a class. Those DAT figures are on the old 1–30 scale which the DAT replaced with a 200–600 scale on 1 March 2025; MUSC gives no new-scale equivalent and we don t convert one. Your official US DAT scores must be less than five years old and MUSC doesn t accept Canadian DAT scores. Does MUSC accept out-of-state applicants? Yes. MUSC s FAQ says “As the only dental school in South Carolina we look for qualified in-state students as well as highly qualified candidates from near and far ” and its Facts & Figures page says 74% of enrolled first-year students come from in state and 26% from out of state without naming a class. MUSC s central admissions page which covers all its programs says non-residents are considered but “superior credentials are usually necessary for acceptance.”
