UIC Dental School Interview: DMD 2026-27

UIC College of Dentistry DMD guide from its own pages: a virtual, typically closed-file faculty interview, the Dec 1 deadline and its Illinois preference.

UIC interviews virtually from September 2026 through March 2027: one interview with one or two faculty members, typically closed file, alongside student services and a student panel. Here is what UIC publishes, what applicants report, and how to prepare. return ( <> UIC DMD Requirements and Class Profile The University of Illinois Chicago College of Dentistry sits in the heart of the Illinois Medical District. It grew out of the Columbian Dental College, founded in Chicago in 1891, was chartered as a college of the University of Illinois in 1913, and calls itself Illinois' largest dental school. Its DMD is a full-time, year-round, four-year program with a fall start, and the Class of 2030 began on August 31, 2026, with 72 students. You apply through AADSAS and UIC's own DMD supplemental application, both due December 1, 2026. UIC publishes a class profile that counts its applicants, interviews, offers and enrollees by residency. This is

what it reports for the class that started this fall: Figure. Class of 2030 (began August 31, 2026). Enrolled. 72. GPA. 3.80 cumulative, 3.75 science, 3.91 non-science (on a 4.0 scale). Average DAT. Academic Average 458, Total Science 463, Perceptual Ability 447, on the 200–600 scale. Applicants. 2,198 (573 resident, 1,625 nonresident). With a bachelor's degree. 72 of 72. Average age. 21.5. Which DAT scale are 458, 463 and 447 on?. The 200–600 scale the DAT has used since 1 March 2025. UIC's class profile notes that "Effective 3/1/2025, the ADA replaced the DAT scale with a 3-digit scale from 200-600 in 10-point increments," and gives the Class of 2030's averages as three-digit scores. It gives no old-scale equivalents for them, and we don't convert any. Its figures for the Classes of 2026 to 2029 (an Academic Average of 20 to 21) are on the old 1–30 scale. UIC doesn't say how it averaged scores from tests taken before the change. It

has no minimum GPA or DAT: it calls each "a competitive application component." In state or out of state? UIC says "As a state institution, there is a strong preference for Illinois residents," and its requirements page says "Preference will be given to residents of Illinois." Its class profile splits each class it covers by residency: Class of 2030. Resident. Nonresident. Applicants. 573. 1,625. Interviewed. 214. 9. Offers extended. 100. 4. Enrolled. 71. 1. Out of state? Know these numbers. Across the five classes in UIC's report, the Classes of 2026 to 2030, it interviewed 20, 17, 12, 9 and 9 nonresidents, and 4 enrolled in all (2, 1, 0, 0 and 1; the sum is ours). The profile's rows say "Resident" and "Nonresident" without defining the terms; UIC's requirements page links Illinois residency guidelines. UIC publishes counts, not an acceptance rate, and we don't compute one. Every applicant needs a bachelor's degree from "an accredited

United States college or university located in the US," conferred no later than June of the year you start (June 2027, this cycle). On visas, UIC says it is accepting applications "from students who currently live in the U.S. and hold a valid visa status." Prerequisite coursework Course. Semester hours. Quarter hours. Chemistry, including at least 4 semester hours (6 quarter hours) of organic chemistry. 14. 21. Biological science. 6. 9. Physics. 6. 9. English. 6. 9. Biochemistry (no lab required). One course. One course. Labs and grades: "All dental school prerequisite science courses must include labs. This does not apply to elective science courses." Every required course needs a C or better, and all must be completed by June of the year you start (June 2027, this cycle). UIC selects on your credentials "including both completed and planned courses." AP credit: AP courses aren't accepted as course requirements. If basic chemistry,

biology or physics requirements were met with AP credit, UIC says students "may take the specific number of credit hours in each area from upper level science courses (preferably at a 4-year university)." English AP credit can be replaced with 6 hours of upper-level literature, advanced composition or intensive writing classes. Community college: "There are no limitations on junior college work, but it is recommended that most work be completed at a 4-year institution." Recommended courses: "To be competitive, applicants are encouraged to take 3-4 upper level courses" from human anatomy, human physiology, histology, microbiology, cell biology, molecular biology, immunology and genetics (lab "not required but encouraged where possible"). The DAT: required, and UIC doesn't accept the Canadian DAT. Scores count only if you took the test "within 2 years prior to application submission," and UIC strongly suggests completing it before the

year you wish to start (before 2027, this cycle). If you retake it after applying, your new official score reaches UIC through AADSAS, which its FAQ says may take 2–4 weeks; UIC doesn't accept unofficial scores by email. Three letters, through AADSAS only: UIC strongly recommends two academic references, preferably from two science professors, and says a third letter "from a dental professional (non-relative) that an applicant shadows is highly preferred." Its requirements page adds, "One committee letter of recommendation will satisfy the three-letter requirement." Letters should be signed and on professional letterhead; paper and emailed letters aren't accepted. Community service: UIC "prides itself on serving the underserved" and expects "a variety of experiences, including community service and volunteer work." They don't have to be related to dentistry. Research: "Students are encouraged to become exposed to research where

possible." Safety and technical standards: UIC's form says "Applicants are required to complete this Safety and Technical Standards form." Its standards include performing dental procedures "measured in increments as small as 0.25 mm." The form doesn't say when it is due. DAT retakes: UIC's pages disagree. UIC's requirements page says "The DAT can be taken up to 5 times, but candidates must wait 60 days between exams." Its 2026–2027 catalog says "The DAT can be taken up to three times, but candidates must wait 90 days between exams." Plan on the stricter reading, three attempts at least 90 days apart, and confirm with codadmissions@uic.edu. Shadowing: recommended on UIC's current pages, required in its 2018–19 blog posts. UIC's requirements page says "It is recommended that applicants obtain 100 or more United States college level dental practice shadowing hours at the time of application submission," and its catalog says the same

without "college level." Two posts on its admissions blog, from 2018 and 2019, say "Most dental schools (including UIC) require that applicants have shadowed a dentist or dental professional." Treat shadowing as required: have 100 or more hours in US dental practices by the time you submit, and confirm with codadmissions@uic.edu. The catalog notes that students often shadow a variety of dentists, including general practitioners. CASPer or Kira?. UIC's DMD admissions pages, its DMD FAQ and the DMD page of its 2026–2027 catalog don't mention CASPer, Acuity Insights, Kira or any similar assessment. Besides AADSAS and your coursework, what they do ask for includes the DAT, three letters of recommendation, the supplemental application with its $85 fee and, if you are invited, an interview. To confirm a rule where UIC's pages disagree, email codadmissions@uic.edu. Its application and DMD program pages say you'll get a reply within 3–4

business days; its requirements page says 7–10 business days "when not in peak application season," so write early. The UIC Interview: What the College Says Virtual, September 2026 through March 2027. In UIC's words, "For the 2026-2027 cycle, interviews will be held virtually September 2026 through March 2027." It doesn't name the video platform. By invitation only. "The interview will be extended by the College's Admissions Office via email at the approval of the Admissions Committee," and "Candidates should not contact the Office of Admissions to request an interview." One interview, with one or two faculty members. "Interview formats are typically closed file and candidates interview one time with 1-2 faculty members." The current page doesn't say how long the interview lasts. More than the interview. "Interview day components consist of student services, faculty interviews and a student panel. Components may be held on different

days of the week." The current page doesn't describe the student services session or the student panel further, and UIC doesn't say whether either is evaluated. No recording. "It is UIC policy not to allow recording of the interview of any type. This can disqualify a candidate." What it counts for. UIC bases its selection on "the applicant's credentials (including both completed and planned courses), letters of recommendation, and information obtained during the application process." A 2018 post on its admissions blog says interviews give "our reviewers a much deeper understanding of your personal qualities, in addition to academic achievement." What closed file means at UIC. UIC's 2018 post on preparing for its interview explains: "The admissions committee conducts a closed file interview. This means that the admissions committee members interviewing you have not reviewed your application." The current page says formats are "typically

closed file," so be ready to introduce yourself and tell your story with specific examples, rather than assuming your interviewers have read your essay. That 2018 post is still on UIC's site, and it describes the interview as it ran then: "a conversational, in-person interview with one or two interviewers," from September to February, during a half-day visit with a welcome, a "One-on-one interview with 1-2 faculty members for 20 minutes (closed file)", an informal student panel, a college tour, a student services and financial aid presentation, and a wrap-up. For 2026–27, go by the current page: the interviews are virtual and run through March. The 20 minutes is the only interview length on the UIC pages we read, and it dates from 2018. What applicants report These are posts on a public applicant forum, and an invite tracker that a forum volunteer compiles there from applicants' reports, not UIC's words: This cycle (2026–27): the

forum's invite tracker (compiled by a volunteer from applicants' reports), last updated 25 September 2026, lists UIC's first invitations on 24 September and a first interview date of 28 September, virtual. As of 6 October 2026, the forum's UIC thread for this cycle held only its opening post, and no invitation had been reported there. Last cycle (2025–26): the tracker listed UIC's first invitations on 18 September 2025 and a first interview date of 1 October, virtual. In the forum's UIC thread, one in-state applicant invited by email on 25 September listed a virtual interview on 30 September (a day before the tracker's date), and posted on 15 December 2025: "Just got the acceptance email!" Two in-state applicants reported invitations by email on 27 and 30 January 2026. The first listed a virtual interview on 5 February and said the dates offered were February 3, 5 and 6. The second posted on 17 March that they had been placed on the

alternate list. On 4 December 2025, an out-of-state applicant posted that they hadn't heard anything yet. One applicant posted "ACCEPTED!!" on 6 April 2026, and on 11 May 2026 another, who had interviewed in mid-October, posted that they had been waitlisted and had heard nothing since. The three applicants in the thread who described the setting all wrote "Virtual." None described the format: how many interviewers, how long, or what was asked. What UIC doesn't publish. The interview's current length, the video platform, whether you will meet one faculty member or two, what is asked, which components fall on which day, and how soon decisions follow an interview. UIC does say it will notify every applicant of a final admissions decision no later than April. Because the interview is typically closed file, reread your whole application before the day and be ready to tell its story yourself. Practice Your UIC Answers Out Loud. UIC's 2026–27

UIC's 2026–27 Admissions Timeline When. What UIC says. June 1, 2026. Applications opened: “Applications for admission open June 1 and close December 1”. As early as you can. Admissions are rolling, “with preference given to earlier applications” (its requirements page says “competitive earlier applications”). After you submit AADSAS. Complete the UIC DMD supplemental application (it asks for your AADSAS ID) and pay the $85 fee, by credit card only; UIC adds, “This can take up to two weeks to post”. During the time frame AADSAS allows. Update your academic records; once AADSAS is submitted, UIC can't accept transcripts, extra letters, résumés or other documents

unless its admissions staff ask. September 2026 through March 2027. Virtual interviews, by emailed invitation. October 14 and December 2, 2026. UIC's virtual tours, by Zoom, for college students and graduates (dates on its Request a Tour page). December 1, 2026. Deadline for both AADSAS and the UIC supplemental application. Before 2027. When UIC strongly suggests you complete the DAT (“prior to the year they wish to enter school”). No later than April 2027. UIC notifies every applicant of a final admissions decision. After April 1, 2027. Reapplicant advising, after the cycle closes. June 2027. Bachelor's degree conferred, and all required coursework completed with a C or better. Fall 2027. Classes begin (the Class of 2030 began on August 31, 2026). UIC gives no date for its first offers. It doesn't keep application materials: to reapply, you resubmit everything through AADSAS. Requests for deferred entrance are "for exceptional

circumstances only." December 1 covers the supplemental too. UIC's requirements page says "Both the AADSAS and UIC online application deadline is December 1." You complete the supplemental application after submitting AADSAS, and right after the $85 fee UIC notes, "This can take up to two weeks to post," so don't leave either part to the last weeks. Admissions are rolling, so earlier is better anyway. A second route in, by invitation. UIC's Urban Health Program page describes a yearlong post-baccalaureate program, run with the College of Medicine, for "an invited group of students who have applied for admission to the College of Dentistry." To be considered, you apply as a regular DMD applicant, "including submitting a complete AADSAS application, letters of recommendation, a Dental Admissions Test score, and the dental school interview." The Admissions Committee considers applicants for the program, and those accepted get a one-year

deferred acceptance, with a space held in the following year's D1 class "upon successful completion of the post-baccalaureate program." The page gives the program's mission: "to recruit, retain, and graduate students from economically and educationally disadvantaged communities, in the oral health sciences." What UIC Looks For UIC says it "must be selective in choosing students," and bases its choice on your credentials, your letters and "information obtained during the application process." Its 2018 interview post says UIC, like most dental schools, uses a personal interview "to assess qualities such as self-confidence, interpersonal skills and your level of passion and knowledge about the field of dentistry," and describes what it looks for. With its current requirements and its technical standards, they make the best checklist for the interview: Communication and interpersonal skills: the 2018 post says "We also want to know how you

will interact with your classmates, faculty, staff and future patients." UIC's technical standards ask students to "Communicate effectively, efficiently and sensitively with patients, colleagues and members of the health care team." Critical thinking and problem solving: UIC teaches through small group learning, in which student teams work through patient cases, and its 2018 post says the approach "demands a high degree of critical thinking and problem solving skills." Practice talking through a problem out loud: the options, what you would weigh, and why you would choose one. Passion and knowledge: the 2018 post says "We want to know that you have researched the field and that you are passionate about being a future oral health provider." UIC's requirements page says applicants "are expected to demonstrate passion for the field," often through shadowing. What makes you, you: the 2018 post says UIC wants "to hear about your

leadership/extracurricular activities," that "We are always looking for leaders to be the next president of student organizations here at the College," and that it wants "students that will add to the diversity of the class in their experiences and contributions." Service to the underserved: UIC "prides itself on serving the underserved" and says service experiences "may be helpful to one's own understanding of selfless giving, compassion for others and exposure to diverse populations." Have one specific story from your service and what it taught you. Taking feedback and calming patients: UIC's technical standards ask students to "Accept critical feedback and respond by appropriate modification of behavior" and to "Manage apprehensive patients with a range of moods in a tactful and congenial manner." Have an example of each. Learning with peers: the same standards include "The ability to learn, and contribute to the learning of others,

through collaboration with peers." Hand skills: a 2019 post on UIC's admissions blog says "Most dental school admissions staff will ask you to discuss how you have developed and practiced your hand skills in everyday life." Be ready to describe one activity concretely. UIC's own interview advice (its 2018 post). "Be yourself. It is crucial that you practice; just do not memorize your answers." Be honest about your weaknesses: UIC says it "shows your interviewers that you have great self-assessment skills." Be reflective: "Rather than just name activities you've been involved in, highlight how they shaped you as an individual and a future oral health provider." "If you don't know something just indicate that you don't know the answer." And come with questions: "During the interview you will have the opportunity to ask your own questions." The best Why UIC material is in its curriculum and its patients. UIC replaced the traditional "2 x

2" structure with "a spiral curriculum that integrates foundational learning and clinical learning throughout the four-year program," and its DMD features small group learning, in which "student teams investigate real-world patient cases," prompted by clinical case studies that a team of its faculty developed. From the first year, students learn foundational clinical skills in pre-patient care clinics. Service learning runs through all four years, and fourth-year students "devote a minimum of 50 days" to community sites serving underserved urban, rural and special-needs patients; UIC says they can dedicate up to half of their fourth year to a community health focus. UIC says 98 percent of the children treated in its dental clinics are Medicaid enrolled or Medicaid eligible. You can also earn a DMD and an MPH together within five years (you apply separately and must be admitted to both), and UIC offers an eight-year PhD/DMD track.

Connect one of these to how you want to learn and whom you want to serve. The practice questions below are ours, built on these criteria. UIC does not publish its interview questions. Traditional / Motivational Tell me about yourself. UIC does not publish its interview questions; these are practice questions built on what it says it looks for. UIC s interviews are “typically closed file ” and its 2018 interview post says that means the committee members interviewing you “have not reviewed your application.” Build a 90-second answer that stands on its who you are the experiences that led you to dentistry and why UIC is the next step. Why dentistry? UIC s 2018 interview post says “We want to know that you have researched the field and that you are passionate about being a future oral health provider ” and its requirements page expects applicants “to demonstrate passion for the field ” often through shadowing. Anchor your answer in something specific you saw while shadowing then say what it confirmed for you. Why UIC? Use what UIC says about its small group learning built on real-world patient cases pre-patient care

clinics from the first year at least 50 days at community sites in the fourth year and clinics where 98 percent of the children treated are Medicaid enrolled or Medicaid eligible. Connect one of them to how you want to learn and whom you want to serve; the location alone is not a reason. What did you learn from shadowing? UIC recommends “100 or more United States college level dental practice shadowing hours at the time of application submission ” and a letter from a dental professional you shadowed is “highly preferred.” Name one thing you saw a dentist do with a patient and what it taught you about the profession. Behavioral Tell me about a time you worked through a disagreement on a team. UIC teaches through small group learning and its technical standards include “The ability to learn and contribute to the learning of others through collaboration with peers.” Keep the setup short show how you listened and what you did and say what

the team achieved. What is your greatest weakness? UIC s own advice is “Be honest about your weaknesses ” which its 2018 interview post says “shows your interviewers that you have great self-assessment skills.” Name a real weakness what you are doing about it and the evidence that it is improving. Tell me about your community service. What did it teach you? UIC “prides itself on serving the underserved” and expects “a variety of experiences including community service and volunteer work ” which don t have to be related to dentistry. Pick one experience and as UIC s 2018 interview post advises “highlight how they shaped you as an individual and a future oral health provider.” Describe a leadership role and what you accomplished in it. UIC s 2018 interview post says “We are always looking for leaders to be the next president of student organizations here at the College.” Pick a time you took responsibility for an outcome not just a title

and say what changed because of you. Ethical / Scenario A patient is anxious and upset before treatment. How do you handle it? UIC s technical standards ask students to “Manage apprehensive patients with a range of moods in a tactful and congenial manner.” Show that you would acknowledge the fear explain each step in plain words agree on a signal to pause and involve your supervising dentist if the patient wants to stop. A patient needs treatment they cannot afford. What do you do? UIC “prides itself on serving the underserved” and says 98 percent of the children treated in its dental clinics are Medicaid enrolled or Medicaid eligible. Acknowledge the patient without judgment explore legitimate options such as phased treatment or a community clinic and never lower the standard of care. Show your reasoning; a question like this rarely has a single right answer. A member of your small group isn t doing their share of the case work. What

do you do? UIC lists “peer evaluation” and “self-reflection” among the features of its small group learning. Talk to your classmate privately first find out what is going on and offer help and involve faculty only if it continues. Show that fairness to the group and respect for the person can go together. You see a classmate cheating on an exam. What do you do? UIC s core values include professionalism “regarding the highest ethical principles in our research teaching and helping those we serve.” Describe an escalation path from a direct conversation to the proper channels and say why integrity matters when patients trust your license. Apply early and finish both parts by December 1 UIC s admissions are rolling “with preference given to earlier applications.” Submit AADSAS first then UIC s supplemental application and its $85 fee (credit card only): both are due December 1 2026 and right after the fee UIC notes “This can take up to two

weeks to post.” Prepare as if your interviewers haven t read your application UIC s interviews are “typically closed file ” which its 2018 interview post says means the committee members interviewing you “have not reviewed your application.” Practice introducing yourself and telling your story with specific examples and say what each experience taught you rather than listing activities. Never record the interview UIC says “It is UIC policy not to allow recording of the interview of any type. This can disqualify a candidate.” Close any recording software before the call set up your camera light and sound in advance and practice answering out loud in the same setup. Don t chase an interview or send extra documents UIC says “Candidates should not contact the Office of Admissions to request an interview ” and once your AADSAS application is submitted it can t accept transcripts extra letters résumés or other documents unless its admissions

staff request them. Update your academic records within the time frame AADSAS allows. UIC says “Interview formats are typically closed file and candidates interview one time with 1-2 faculty members.” Its 2018 interview post explains that closed file means the committee members interviewing you “have not reviewed your application.” For 2026–27 the interviews are virtual from September 2026 through March

2027 and the interview day also includes student services and a student panel; “Components may be held on different days of the week.” Recording the interview in any way is not allowed and “can disqualify a candidate.” UIC s current page doesn t say how long the interview lasts or what is asked. Is the UIC dental interview virtual or in person? Virtual this cycle. UIC s application page says “For the 2026-2027 cycle interviews will be held virtually September 2026 through March 2027.” It doesn t name the video platform. A 2018 post still on its admissions blog describes an in-person interview; go by the current page and your invitation. In a public applicant forum s UIC thread the three 2025–26 applicants who described the setting all wrote “Virtual.” Does UIC use the MMI? UIC s own pages describe no candidates “interview one time with 1-2 faculty members ” typically closed file. Its 2018 interview post set UIC s conversational

interview apart from schools that “may do a panel interview a multiple mini interview open file or skype interviews.” None of the 2025–26 applicants who posted in a public forum s UIC thread described an MMI. Prepare for one interview with one or two faculty members. Does UIC require CASPer or Kira for dental school? UIC s DMD admissions pages its DMD FAQ and the DMD page of its 2026–2027 catalog don t mention CASPer Acuity Insights Kira or any similar assessment. Besides AADSAS and your coursework what they do ask for includes the DAT three letters of recommendation the supplemental application with its $85 fee and if you are invited a virtual interview. What GPA and DAT do I need for UIC dental school? Academic Average 463 Total Science and 447 Perceptual Ability on the 200–600 scale the DAT has used since March 2025. UIC gives no old-scale equivalents for them. It accepts a DAT only if you took it within 2 years before you submit your application and it doesn t accept the Canadian DAT. Does UIC accept out-of-state applicants? Yes but “As a state institution there is a strong preference for Illinois residents.” UIC s class profile counts the Class of 2030 by of 1 625 nonresident applicants 9 were interviewed 4 were offered a seat and 1 enrolled; of 573 resident applicants 214 were interviewed 100 were offered a seat and 71 enrolled. supplemental application; applications opened June 1. Admissions are rolling “with preference given to earlier applications ” so apply well before the deadline. Complete the supplemental application after you submit AADSAS and pay its $85 fee by credit card. UIC notifies every applicant of a final decision no later than April. How many shadowing hours does UIC require? UIC s requirements page recommends “100 or more United States college level dental practice shadowing hours at the time of application submission ” and its catalog says the same without “college level.” Two posts on its admissions blog from 2018 and 2019 say “Most dental schools (including UIC) require that applicants have shadowed a dentist or dental professional.” To be safe have 100 or more hours in US dental practices when you submit and confirm with codadmissions@uic.edu. A letter from a dental professional you shadowed is “highly preferred.” UTHealth Houston Dental
