UT San Antonio IDEP: Kira Interview & Requirements
UTSA's IDEP screens with a Kira virtual interview before an in-person skills test. ECE 2.50 GPA floor, TOEFL on both scales, and $535 in fees before any offer.
IDEP screens with a Kira virtual interview before anyone speaks to you live, then an in-person skills test — and charges $535 across the two stages. return ( <> Kira First, Then a Day in San Antonio UT Health San Antonio's IDEP screens in two stages, and the first one happens without a human in the room. Applications that are complete by the deadline are "considered for a KIRA virtual interview first, followed by an in-person interview ." So before anyone at the school speaks to you live, you will have recorded answers alone into a webcam on a timer. Kira is a one-take recorded interview. There are no retakes. You get a prompt, a short time to think, and a fixed window to answer — then it moves on. If you have not done one before, our Kira prep guide for CAAPID covers the format, and the NYU Kira guide walks through what one of these actually feels like. Clear that, and the in-person stage adds skills testing — which is where the second
fee arrives. Practise recording an answer before Kira records you. One take, on a timer, scored on clarity, structure and reasoning — the same shape as the assessment UTSA screens with.. Try it free →. $535 Before Anyone Offers You a Place IDEP charges twice, and the second charge is the largest of any program we have documented. Fee. Amount. When. Supplemental application fee. $150. With the application, by June 9. Skills testing fee. $385. Interview stage — the deadline comes in your invitation email. For comparison, UNC charges $150 plus a $300 bench test fee, and Michigan charges $75 with no interview fee at all. Budget for San Antonio accordingly, and remember the $385 lands alongside flights to Texas. The 2.50 GPA Floor, and What Counts Toward It UTSA requires an ECE course-by-course evaluation — "we accept only ECE evaluations" — showing a minimum comprehensive US GPA of 2.50 for your dental degree. That floor is higher than
Dugoni's 2.0. If your evaluation lands between the two, that single number decides which of these programs you can apply to at all. Advanced training can go in, and carries no GPA floor. UTSA asks you to include any advanced dental education you completed abroad in the ECE evaluation if you want the committee to consider it — and states there is no minimum GPA requirement for those advanced programs. If you have postgraduate training, it can only help, so make sure ECE evaluates it. One recent change worth noting: official foreign transcripts are no longer required at the application stage — they are collected at the interview phase instead, and are no longer accepted by post. Older guides still tell you to send them up front. TOEFL: Both Scales Published, MyBest Refused UTSA is one of the clearer programs on the January 2026 scale change, publishing a minimum on both: iBT 92 on the old scale, or 4.5 on the new scoring introduced
January 2026. The Home Edition is accepted — as at UNC , but unlike Washington , which rejects it. MyBest scores are not accepted , and UTSA adds "no exceptions or modifications". Scores must be under two years old at the deadline and sent from ETS to CAAPID. Every program's minimum on both scales is in our TOEFL requirements guide . They Tell You What the Letters Should Cover Three electronic evaluations through CAAPID, with at least one from the Dean or a faculty member of your dental school or a dental post-graduate program you attended. More useful than the sourcing rule is that UTSA publishes what it wants the letters to address : dental skills, ethics, clinical reasoning, personality, character, and patient management That is effectively a brief. Send it to your evaluators verbatim rather than hoping they guess — a letter praising your work ethic in general terms covers almost none of those six things. One Deadline for Everything,
and UTSA's Own Warning June 9, 2026 applies to every item: the ECE evaluation, TOEFL, INBDE or NBDE, all three evaluations, the CV, your diplomas and licences, and the $150 fee. UTSA is unusually blunt about what happens if things arrive late. It notes that an application can show as complete in CAAPID while their program still considers it incomplete, that it "strongly discourages last-minute submissions", and that documents arriving after the deadline result in disqualification. The school tries to flag missing items, but states plainly that the responsibility is yours. Apply early enough to be told what is missing. That is the practical reading of UTSA's warning. Applying early does not just avoid a rush — it buys you the chance to be notified that something has not arrived while there is still time to chase it. Answer the question in your first sentence — recorded formats punish long wind-ups → one concrete reason from your own clinical history → close cleanly rather than trailing off. The Kira round is a recorded one-take video assessment so it happens before anyone at the school speaks to you live. What does it cost to apply to UTSA IDEP? $150 as a supplemental application fee at the time of applying and a further $385 skills testing fee at the interview stage
with the payment deadline communicated in the interview invitation. That is $535 before any offer plus travel to San Antonio. What GPA does UT San Antonio IDEP require? A minimum comprehensive US GPA of 2.50 on an ECE course-by-course evaluation of your dental degree. UTSA accepts only ECE evaluations. Advanced dental education completed abroad can also be included if you want it considered and carries no minimum GPA. What TOEFL score does UTSA IDEP require? A minimum iBT scaled score of 92 or 4.5 under the new scoring introduced in January 2026. The Home Edition is accepted but MyBest scores are not with no exceptions. Scores must be no more than two years old at the deadline and sent from ETS to CAAPID. Do I need to send transcripts to UT San Antonio when I apply? No not any more. UTSA no longer requires official foreign transcripts during the application phase — they are required at the interview phase instead and are no longer
accepted by mail. Older guides still say otherwise. How is the UTSA IDEP program structured? It is a 29-month DDS. Students begin with a six-month hybrid preparatory course combining online distance learning with hands-on training taught by specialists then integrate with traditional third-year dental students for two years of multidisciplinary clinical training.
