Utah Dental School Interview & CASPer: DDS 2026-27
University of Utah DDS guide from its own pages: in-person-only interviews, required CASPer, the Oct 15, 2026 deadline, 380 DAT minimums (200–600 scale).
Utah interviews only in person, requires the United States Casper 2 this cycle, and won't review applications submitted after October 15. Here is what the University of Utah School of Dentistry publishes, what applicants report, and how to prepare. return ( <> Utah DDS Requirements and Class Profile The University of Utah School of Dentistry, in Salt Lake City, says that as part of University of Utah Health it is "a member of the Mountain West’s only academic medical center." It is a young school: its inaugural class of 20 began the four-year DDS program in August 2013, and in 2017 it admitted its first full class of 50 students, 25 of them from out of state. You apply through AADSAS by October 15, 2026. Once you submit, Utah sends qualified applicants a link to its supplemental application, which comes with a $100 non-refundable fee, and this cycle it requires the United States Casper 2. Utah accepts only US citizens or permanent
residents. It publishes no counts of applications, interviews or offers, and no current class size. This is what it does publish: Figure. What Utah publishes. Where. Minimum GPA. 3.0, cumulative and science; “Any application with a GPA below 3.0 will be denied”. Requirements page. Minimum DAT. 380 in every section, on the 200–600 scale. Requirements page. Average DAT of “current D1 students”. Academic average 470, perceptual ability 480, survey of natural sciences 480 (200–600 scale). Requirements page (last updated May 2026). “Current D1 averages”. GPA 3.76 cumulative and 3.69 science; DAT AA 22, PAT 21 and SNS 22 on the old 1–30 scale, which Utah calls approximately 460, 450 and 460 on the 3-digit scale. Quick-Start Guide 2025–2026, dated August 2025. Class size. Not published; the 2025–26 guide speaks of a “small class size”. —. Which DAT scale are these on?. The 380 minimum and the requirements page's averages (470, 480 and 480) are
on the 200–600 scale the DAT has used since 1 March 2025. Utah gives no old-scale equivalent for them, and we don't convert any. Its 2025–26 Quick-Start Guide gave its averages on the old 1–30 scale (AA 22, PAT 21, SNS 22) and said they are "approximately equivalent" to 460, 450 and 460 on the 3-digit scale: those conversions are Utah's. The two sets of "current D1" averages differ, and Utah doesn't say which class either describes. Utah accepts DAT scores from the last three years, but doesn't say how the 380 minimum applies to a score on the old scale; if yours is one, ask dental.admissions@hsc.utah.edu. The university catalog sets lower bars than the school's website. The University of Utah's 2026–2027 catalog entry for the DDS says "Job shadowing: 40 hours (minimum) required," "There is no minimum GPA requirement for acceptance," and "no minimum DAT score is required," and it lists anatomy as a recommended course and microbiology
without a lab. The School of Dentistry's own requirements page asks for 100 shadowing hours, a 3.0 cumulative and science GPA, 380 in every DAT section (200–600 scale), anatomy and a microbiology lab. Utah's PRE-CAP page gives a different GPA rule: admission to the School of Dentistry "requires a 3.00 GPA average on at least the last 60 credit hours of coursework." Meet the stricter rules (the website's, plus a 3.0 over your last 60 credit hours), and confirm with dental.admissions@hsc.utah.edu. Why this guide gives no acceptance rate. Utah's pages publish no counts of applications, interviews or offers, and no current class size, so no acceptance rate or interview rate can be worked out from them. The only class sizes on the pages we read are historical: 20 students in its first class, in 2013, and 50 in its first full class, in 2017. In state or out of state? Utah says "The University of Utah only accepts United States citizens or
permanent residents. Our program does not allow students to change their residency status after applying." Its 2025–26 guide adds that students accepted as non-residents "will be classified as non-residents for the duration of their education with the School of Dentistry." For the 2026–2027 academic year, Utah lists totals of $59,903 for Utah residents and $104,129 for non-residents, and expects an increase of about 5 percent a year. Its admissions pages don't state a preference for Utah residents. Applicants from Alaska, Arizona, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, Hawaii, Montana, New Mexico, North Dakota and Wyoming can apply for tuition funding through WICHE's Professional Student Exchange Program (PSEP), in which Utah has taken part since the 2016–2017 academic year; Utah points you to WICHE's website, state by state, for the application materials. Prerequisite coursework Utah requires these courses to be completed
before you matriculate, and accepts coursework from the last ten years; anything older "needs to be repeated before matriculation." Course. Semester hours. Anatomy (human or comparative). 3. Biochemistry. 3. Biology. 6. General/inorganic chemistry. 8. Organic chemistry. 6. English composition/technical writing. 6. Physics. 6. Physiology. 3. Microbiology. 3. Microbiology lab. 1. Labs and grades: the list names a lab only for microbiology. Utah's requirements page doesn't say whether the other courses need labs, or what minimum grade a prerequisite needs; if one of yours is in doubt, ask before you apply. A bachelor's degree from an accredited United States college or university is required of all applicants. Recommended courses, counted toward elective credits: business, cell biology, communications, computer science, ethics, histology, immunology, molecular biology/genetics, additional biology, chemistry or physics, and 3-dimensional
art. Shadowing: "100 hours minimum required; we recommend shadowing a minimum of four different dentists." Letters, through AADSAS: three are required: two from science instructors who taught you in a classroom setting and assigned a grade, and one from a college/university committee, a non-science instructor, dental professional, employer, supervisor or clergy member. You may add an optional fourth letter attesting to character and fitness for the profession of dentistry. The DAT: required, with scores submitted through AADSAS; Utah accepts scores from the last three years and requires at least 380 in every section (200–600 scale) to be considered for admission. Its catalog asks for the scores by October 15 of the application year. Physical ability: "Applicants must be able to perform physical and manual functions, with reasonable accommodations, necessary to the performance of dentistry." Utah's admissions office answers questions at
dental.admissions@hsc.utah.edu or 801-646-4654. CASPer: Required in the 2026–27 Cycle Utah's Casper page says "In the 2026-2027 cycle, the University of Utah School of Dentistry requires the United States Casper 2 assessment." It describes the test as "an open-response, situational judgment test that evaluates applicants' social intelligence and professionalism," and sends you to Acuity Insights, at acuityinsights.app, to sign up. Utah doesn't publish how it weighs the results. Rule. What Utah says. Which test. The United States Casper 2. What it measures. It “evaluates applicants' social intelligence and professionalism”. How results reach Utah. “Official results from the Casper situational judgment test” are on Utah's list of materials for its Admissions Office, with the supplemental application form and the $100 fee. Deadline. No separate Casper date on Utah's pages. Utah says all required credentials necessary to complete the
application must be received by October 15 (October 15, 2026, this cycle); it doesn't say in so many words that Casper results count among them, so plan for yours to arrive by then. Without Casper and Duet scores (2025–26 guide). “Applications without these scores will be considered incomplete”. Casper only, or Casper and Duet?. Utah's 2025–2026 Quick-Start Guide, still the guide linked from its DDS pages, said "All applicants must complete both the Casper and Duet assessments. Applications without these scores will be considered incomplete." Its Casper page for the 2026–2027 cycle names only the United States Casper 2. The Casper page is this cycle's, but before you book, ask dental.admissions@hsc.utah.edu whether Duet is also needed. Acuity says there are "no additional charges to take Duet, should your program(s) require it." Seen November 2 somewhere?. When we checked Acuity's program directory in August, it listed November 2, 2026
for Utah. Utah's own pages give no Casper date, but they say all required credentials necessary to complete the application must be received by October 15, and its 2025–26 guide said "All materials must be submitted and verified by Oct. 15." Go by the school: if you haven't taken Casper yet, book the earliest date you can, and ask dental.admissions@hsc.utah.edu how late your results can arrive. The Utah Interview: What the School Says In person, and only in person. In Utah's words, "Interviews are only offered in-person. There are no online interviews offered." Who is invited. "The Admissions Committee at the University of Utah School of Dentistry will review applications upon completion. Applicants are then selected for in-person interviews based on information submitted through AADSAS." September to November, last cycle. Utah's 2025–26 Quick-Start Guide said "Interviews take place Sept - Nov; first admissions offers sent on Dec. 15."
Utah hasn't published a guide or an interview window for 2026–27. The format isn't published. Utah doesn't say who interviews you, how many interviewers there are, how long it lasts, whether they have read your file, or what the day involves. None of the Utah pages we read mentions an MMI, interview stations or a panel. How Utah selects. Utah says "Students are selected based on objective and subjective evaluations": cumulative GPA, DAT scores and science grades, plus other factors that include, but are not limited to, commitment to its values, to building a humanistic culture, to its mission of serving the underserved, and to the dental profession and learning. "Applications are considered holistically." What applicants report These are posts on a public applicant forum, and an invite tracker that a forum volunteer compiles there from applicants' reports, not Utah's words: This cycle (2026–27): the forum's invite tracker (compiled by a
volunteer from applicants' reports), last updated 25 September 2026, lists Utah's first invitations on 30 July and a first interview date of 1 September, in person. In the forum's Utah thread for this cycle, the two replies as of 6 October 2026 pass on other applicants' news second-hand; no one there has described their own interview. Last cycle (2025–26): the tracker lists first invitations on 5 August and a first interview on 5 September 2025, in person. One out-of-state applicant posted on 16 August 2025 that they had been invited by email on 15 August, for an in-person interview on 26 September. No post in either cycle's thread describes the interview itself: who interviewed, how long it lasted, or what was asked. What Utah doesn't publish. How many people interview you, how long the interview lasts, whether your interviewers have read your application, what is asked, and this cycle's interview window. Utah does say it selects
interviewees on what you submitted through AADSAS, and it lists six considerations for candidate selection (below), so reread your whole application before the day and be ready to talk about any part of it. Practice Your Utah Answers Out Loud. Utah interviews only in person, and it names communication, compassion and professionalism among its considerations for candidate selection. What Utah says. From June 2, or when AADSAS opens. AADSAS applications can be filed; “Early application is strongly encouraged”. Once you submit AADSAS. Utah sends “qualified students” a link to its supplemental application; the materials to send are the supplemental form, a $100 non-refundable fee, official Casper results and, if they weren't in AADSAS, official
DAT scores. The Admissions Committee reviews applications “upon completion” and selects interviewees “based on information submitted through AADSAS”. September to November (last cycle's window). In-person interviews; no 2026–27 window is published. October 15, 2026. The last day to file AADSAS; all required credentials necessary to complete the application must be received. Applications submitted after October 15 “will not be reviewed”. December 15, 2026. First-round acceptances begin. Within 30 days of accepting an offer. A $1,000 non-refundable deposit, credited to first-year tuition. March 31, 2027. A second $1,000 non-refundable deposit. April 1, 2027. Utah asks students to complete the FAFSA by April 1 of the entering year. June 30, 2027. A third and final $1,000 non-refundable deposit. Before you matriculate in fall 2027. Every prerequisite completed, and any coursework more than ten years old repeated. October 15 is close: plan
for received and verified by then. Utah's How to Apply page says all required credentials necessary to complete the application "must be received by October 15," and that applications submitted after October 15 "will not be reviewed by the Admissions Committee." Its 2025–26 guide went further: "All materials must be submitted and verified by Oct. 15." Utah sends the supplemental link once you submit AADSAS, and gives the supplemental application no separate due date. If you're still applying this cycle, submit AADSAS now, complete the supplemental application and fee as soon as the link arrives, and ask dental.admissions@hsc.utah.edu whether your file can be complete in time. Not admitted? Utah's PRE-CAP. If your DDS application is rejected or waitlisted, Utah's PRE-CAP admissions committee reviews it for PRE-CAP, a program for applicants who qualify as part of a rural, tribal or medically underserved community. The rural and medically
underserved routes depend on a Utah address (high school, current or childhood); the tribal route also counts "demonstration of strong interest in caring for tribal communities." PRE-CAP offers conditional acceptance to the School of Dentistry: after three semesters of coursework, with mentorship and academic counseling, students who meet the academic standards gain admittance into the DDS program. A full tuition scholarship and a cost-of-living stipend are provided for the duration of PRE-CAP, and Utah says successful graduates will continue their work in regions of the state with limited access to oral healthcare. Eligible applicants are contacted by email around February 15 to schedule a PRE-CAP interview, and decisions are usually made April 15. What Utah Looks For Utah says "Students are selected based on objective and subjective evaluations." The objective criteria include "cumulative GPA, DAT scores, and science grades"; the
other factors it names include commitment to its values "of compassion, trustworthiness, excellence, innovation, and equality," to "building a humanistic culture and learning environment," to its mission "in making a meaningful impact on the health of the underserved," and to "the dental profession and learning." Under the heading "Considerations for Candidate Selection," its DDS page lists six qualities. Utah doesn't say what the interview itself scores, but these make the best checklist for it: Communication: "Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and non-verbally, and demonstrate empathy, cultural sensitivity, and conflict resolution and problem-solving skills." In person, the non-verbal part shows too, so practice answering out loud to another person, and have a conflict you helped resolve. Compassion: "Ability to show empathy in patient care, ethical decision-making, cultural competency, and sensitivity."
Practice talking through an ethical dilemma out loud, including what each person in it needs. Dental knowledge: "Knowledge of basic sciences, observation of dental techniques and procedures, knowledge of technological advancements in dental history, and participation in dental research." Know what you observed in your shadowing hours, one technological change in dentistry you can explain, and any research you did. Professionalism: "Ability to demonstrate ethical behavior, responsibility, integrity, interpersonal skills, and be a team player to build relationships with colleagues in dental school and future professional settings." Have a team story and an example of owning a mistake. Service: "Volunteer experiences, community engagement, leadership, and commitment to community service and addressing access to care for underserved populations." The first item in Utah's mission is "Service: we care for the underserved," so bring service
you kept up over time, and what it showed you about access to care. Tenacity, perseverance and grit: "Ability to overcome challenges, commitment to achieving goals, response to failure and setbacks, and resilience." Pick a real setback, what you did next, and what changed. Utah's 2025–26 guide also lists "OTHER CONSIDERATIONS: Personal statement, research experience, volunteering, community service, and leadership roles." And once you are a student, its 2026–2027 Student Handbook holds you to a Code of Ethics built on honesty, confidentiality, respect for others and responsibility, which includes: "I will participate fully in the enforcement of this statement of principles. I realize that failure to take appropriate action is itself a violation of the principles." The best Why Utah material is in its clinics and its mission. Utah's 2025–26 guide says "Our students receive a remarkable volume of clinical training that begins in the first
year" and "At Utah, students are not responsible for recruiting patients." It lists student clinics in Salt Lake City and St. George, and says students rotate in a mobile clinic that serves communities throughout the state; Utah's history page adds, "From St. George to Ogden, the school has the largest clinical network of any dental school in the nation." A February 2026 school news story says "In partnership with the Utah Legislature, the school became the administrator of dental care for Utah’s Medicaid patients," and describes clinics where dental, medical and behavioral health providers work side by side. Its 2026–2027 catalog lists clinic courses from the first year's spring, an ethics and professionalism course in the first semester, three community-engaged learning courses and an ethical leadership course in the third year, and each of the first three years includes a summer semester. Connect one of these to how you want to learn
and whom you want to serve. The practice questions below are ours, built on these criteria. Utah does not publish its interview questions. Internationally trained dentist? Utah
does not publish its interview questions; these are practice questions built on what it says it weighs. Utah selects interviewees “based on information submitted through AADSAS” but doesn t say whether your interviewers have read it so build a 90-second answer that works either who you are the experiences that led you to dentistry and why Utah is the next step. Why dentistry? Utah weighs “Commitment to the dental profession and learning ” and its “Dental Knowledge” consideration includes “observation of dental techniques and procedures.” Anchor your answer in something you saw in your shadowing hours then say what it confirmed for you. Why the University of Utah? Use what Utah says about its clinical training that begins in the first year; students who aren t responsible for recruiting patients; student clinics in Salt Lake City and St. George and a mobile clinic that serves communities across the state; and a mission whose first item
is “ we care for the underserved.” Connect one of them to how you want to learn and whom you want to serve; the mountains alone are not a reason. What did you learn from shadowing more than one dentist? Utah requires at least 100 shadowing hours and recommends “shadowing a minimum of four different dentists.” Compare two of what differed in how they worked or talked with patients and what you took from it. Behavioral Tell me about a setback and how you responded. Tenacity perseverance and grit is one of Utah s six considerations for candidate selection described as “Ability to overcome challenges commitment to achieving goals response to failure and setbacks and resilience.” Keep the setback short and spend most of the answer on what you did next and what changed. Tell me about a time you helped resolve a conflict. Utah s “Communication” consideration includes “conflict resolution and problem-solving skills.” Describe what each side
needed what you said or did and how it ended; show that you listened before you tried to solve it. Tell me about your service to an underserved community. Utah s “Service” consideration includes “commitment to community service and addressing access to care for underserved populations ” and the first item in its mission is “ we care for the underserved.” Choose service you kept up over time and talk about the people it served and the barriers to care you saw rather than the hours. Tell me about a time you worked on a team. Utah s “Professionalism” consideration includes the ability to “be a team player to build relationships with colleagues in dental school and future professional settings.” Keep the setup short and spend most of the answer on what you contributed and how the team got there. Ethical / Scenario A patient needs treatment they cannot afford. What do you do? The first item in Utah s mission is “ we care for the underserved
” and its “Compassion” consideration includes “ethical decision-making.” Acknowledge the patient without judgment explore legitimate options such as phased treatment or a community clinic and never lower the standard of care. Show your reasoning; a question like this rarely has a single right answer. You see a classmate cheating on an exam. What do you do? Utah s Code of Ethics for its students says “I will neither give nor receive aid in examinations or assignments unless such cooperation is expressly permitted by the instructor ” and “failure to take appropriate action is itself a violation of the principles.” Describe an escalation path from a direct conversation to the proper channels and say why integrity matters when patients trust your license. A classmate posts a patient s treatment photo on social media without asking the patient. What do you do? Utah s 2026–2027 Student Handbook says “In order to post any patient treatment
outcomes or photos students must obtain written consent of the patient or they will be in violation of HIPAA.” Show that you would raise it with your classmate promptly and privately ask them to take it down and go to a faculty member if it isn t resolved keeping the patient s privacy first. A patient from a different cultural background declines the treatment you recommend. How do you respond? Utah s considerations for candidate selection name “cultural sensitivity” under communication and “cultural competency” under compassion. Find out what worries the patient explain in plain words offer alternatives respect their right to decide document the conversation and don t abandon the patient. Get everything in by October 15 Utah won t review applications submitted after October 15 and all required credentials necessary to complete the application must be received by then; its 2025–26 guide said all materials must be “submitted and verified
by Oct. 15.” If you re still applying submit AADSAS now complete the supplemental application and $100 fee as soon as Utah s link arrives and ask dental.admissions@hsc.utah.edu whether your file can be complete in time. Book Casper now and ask about Duet Utah requires the United States Casper 2 in 2026–27 and lists official Casper results among the materials for its Admissions Office but gives no separate test date. Book the earliest date you can and ask admissions how late your results can arrive and whether Duet which its 2025–26 guide also required is needed this cycle. Prepare for a face-to-face interview Utah says “Interviews are only offered in-person. There are no online interviews offered.” Plan the trip as soon as your invitation arrives and practice answering out loud to another Utah s “Communication” consideration covers communicating “both verbally and non-verbally.” Bring evidence of service to the underserved The first
item in Utah s mission is “ we care for the underserved ” and its selection factors include “Commitment to the U of U School of Dentistry mission in making a meaningful impact on the health of the underserved.” Have one specific service experience whom it served what barrier to care you saw and what you did about it. Utah publishes only the “Interviews are only offered in-person. There are no online interviews offered.” Its Admissions Committee reviews applications “upon completion ” and applicants “are then selected for in-person interviews based on information submitted through AADSAS.” Its 2025–26 guide said interviews take place from September to November. Utah doesn t publish who interviews you how many interviewers there are how long the interview lasts whether it is open or closed file or what is asked and none of
the Utah pages we read mentions an MMI. Is the University of Utah dental interview in person or virtual? In person and only in Utah says “There are no online interviews offered.” A public applicant forum s invite tracker compiled by a volunteer from applicants reports lists Utah s interviews as in person in 2025–26 and 2026–27 and one 2025–26 applicant posted there that they had been invited to an in-person interview on 26 September 2025. Does the University of Utah require CASPer for dental school? Yes. Utah s Casper page says “In the 2026-2027 cycle the University of Utah School of Dentistry requires the United States Casper 2 assessment ” an open-response situational judgment test that “evaluates applicants social intelligence and professionalism.” Official Casper results are among the materials Utah asks you to send to its Admissions Office. Utah gives no separate test date. All required credentials necessary to complete the
application must be received by October 15 2026; Utah doesn t say in so many words that Casper results count among them so plan for yours to arrive by then.
