The Only TOEFL Waiver We Have Found VCU prefers a total TOEFL score of 4.5 on the new scale. What makes it unusual is the sentence that follows: Waived if you hold a US degree. VCU states the TOEFL requirement "may be waived if the applicant has received a degree from an accredited U.S. Institution." Compare that with Michigan , UNC and Washington , which all state that no waivers are granted at all. If you hold a US master's or another US degree, VCU may be the one program on your list where the TOEFL is not a barrier. VCU also explains why it is strict, which is rare enough to be worth knowing: it cites a Journal of Dental Education study finding that TOEFL and language skill are among the more predictive criteria for success in an international dental studies program. Extra Letters Are Welcome Here — Which Is Unusual VCU asks for three letters, with the same prescribed sources as UNC: The dean or a faculty member of your dental school. A dentist practising in the United States who supervised or worked with you. Someone who has supervised you in a professional setting. They must be less than two years old , on letterhead, and signed. But then VCU says something no other program on this site does: letters beyond the number CAAPID accepts may be emailed directly by the writer to idp@vcu.edu, or posted to the program. Program. optional extra from a dental professional. Michigan. Not accepted at all. UNC. Only the three submitted via CAAPID. So if you have a genuinely strong fourth advocate — particularly a US dentist — VCU is a program where that letter can actually reach the committee. Expect a Long Silence, and Do Not Call VCU is refreshingly direct about its own timeline: "Our application cycle is very long, there may be large intervals of time between communications from our office." "We highly discourage applicants calling our office to find out the status of their application." That is genuinely useful. Silence from VCU is the normal state of the process rather than a signal, and chasing it is explicitly unwelcome. Allow 72 hours after applying for processing — VCU confirms receipt, so that first email is the one to watch for. You cannot visit while under review.
