UNC Dental School Interview: DDS 2026-27
UNC Adams DDS guide from its own pages: in-person interviews by invitation, Sept–Nov; admitted averages 3.72 GPA, 460 DAT AA (new scale). Deadline passed.
UNC interviews by invitation only between September and November, plans in-person interviews for 2026–27, and reports averages of a 3.72 GPA and a 460 DAT Academic Average (200–600 scale) for its most recently admitted class. Here is what UNC publishes, what applicants report, and how to prepare. return ( <> UNC DDS Requirements and Class Profile The 2026–27 deadline has passed. UNC's DDS admissions page gives October 1, 2026 as the deadline for AADSAS and for UNC's own supplemental application. If you applied, watch for an interview invitation: UNC notifies the applicants it selects on a rolling basis between September and November, and this guide sets out what it says about the interview. If you didn't, plan for the next cycle; UNC's admissions page doesn't give its dates yet. UNC's university catalog prints later deadlines, explained in the timeline below. The UNC Adams School of Dentistry, at the University of North Carolina at
Chapel Hill, runs a four-year DDS program. Established in 1950, it was the first dental school in North Carolina and the state's only dental school for 61 years. You apply through AADSAS and UNC's own supplemental application. UNC says it has no GPA or DAT minimum; it publishes preferred scores and the averages of its most recently admitted class: Figure. UNC's number. Note. Average GPA, most recently admitted class. 3.72. UNC doesn't say whether this is overall or science GPA. Average DAT Academic Average, same class. 460 (200–600 scale). UNC doesn't name the class. Preferred overall GPA. At least 3.2. A preference, not a minimum. Preferred DAT Academic Average. 420 (200–600 scale). A preference, not a minimum. First-year DDS students who received white coats, spring 2026. 89. A count at the ceremony, from a UNC news story; UNC's admissions pages and catalog state no class size. In UNC's words, "Admissions considers the entire
application in making its decisions, and the GPA and DAT scores are just part of this holistic review." Its catalog adds that there "is not sufficient space in the dental school to admit all students who meet its quantitative and qualitative standards," so "the quality of the student's undergraduate work is of great importance in selection for admission, as well as motivation to pursue a career in dentistry." Which DAT scale are 420 and 460 on?. The 200–600 scale the DAT has used since 1 March 2025. UNC prints no old-scale (1–30) figure beside either number, and we don't add a conversion of our own. If your score is on the old scale, don't compare it with a bare 420; ask ddsadmissions@unc.edu how UNC reads it. Why this guide gives no acceptance rate. UNC publishes preferred scores and the averages of its most recently admitted class, but not how many people apply, interview or receive offers. No acceptance rate can be worked out from
its pages. Prerequisite coursework Course. What UNC requires. Semester (quarter) hours. General biology and anatomy & physiology. Two lecture courses of at least 4 semester hours each, with labs: one general biology, one human anatomy and physiology (both parts, if your school splits it into two). 8 (12). General chemistry. Two lecture courses of at least 4 semester hours each, with labs. 8 (12). Organic chemistry. Two lecture courses of at least 3 semester hours each; labs not required. 6 (10). Biochemistry. One upper-level lecture course of at least 3 semester hours; lab not required. 3 (5). Physics. Two college-level courses covering basic principles of physics relevant to living things; labs not required. 6 (10). English. Two semesters. 6 (10). Finished before July 15, 2027. UNC's admissions page says all prerequisite courses and degrees must be completed by mid-July of the year you enter: for fall 2027, "by July 15, 2027." Its FAQ
says "before July 15, 2027," so finish before then. You need at least a C in each prerequisite. In person is recommended; labs must be. UNC strongly recommends taking required science prerequisites in person at a regionally accredited four-year institution, no more than five years old, and says "All laboratory-based coursework must be completed in person." It accepts up to 64 credit hours from a community college or an accredited online college or university, as accepted by UNC-Chapel Hill's Office of Undergraduate Admissions. Letter grades. Pass/fail counts only for prerequisites taken in a semester affected by COVID-19 (spring 2020 through summer 2021). AP and IB credits count if your college transcript lists them as credit earned; CLEP credits don't. A substitute course needs the Director of Admissions' approval, and UNC verifies it only after admission. A degree is strongly recommended. UNC's catalog says students not pursuing a
degree must complete at least three years of accredited college courses (96 semester or 144 quarter hours). UNC doesn't recommend any specific major. The DAT is required , with official scores, which UNC wants "before we will review their application." "Scores more than three (3) years old will not be considered." Canadian applicants can submit Canadian DAT scores. Letters: three, sent through AADSAS: one from a science professor, one from a professor in your major and one from a dental practitioner. A committee letter can replace the science letter, the major letter or both, "but applications must still include letter from dental practitioner." You can send up to four. Shadowing: no set number of hours. UNC wants applicants to have "a broad, well-rounded understanding of what it means to be a general dentist," and its catalog says "Multiple, long-term experiences are valued more highly than short-term interactions." UNC also encourages
online dental continuing education, with any certificates of completion included in your application. No transfer students into the DDS program. Where UNC's own pages disagree. A dentist's letter. The admissions page's list of required materials includes one, but its FAQ counts an application complete with "three letters of evaluation from faculty members (i.e. academic references) or a Pre-Health committee letter." Include the dentist's letter. Official DAT scores. The admissions page requires them before review; the catalog says that during the admissions cycle "applicants may submit unofficial DAT scores by email or fax or in-person." Send official scores. Dissection. The catalog says "one laboratory must include dissection," and that one biology course must be "human anatomy or vertebrate zoology with a laboratory." The admissions page asks for human anatomy and physiology with a lab and mentions dissection only for substitute
courses. If your anatomy lab had no dissection, ask before you count on it. In each case the stricter reading is the safe one. To confirm, email ddsadmissions@unc.edu. Applying as an international student? International students are eligible to apply to UNC's DDS program. International coursework or degrees must be officially evaluated (for the DDS, UNC recommends a course-by-course evaluation by World Education Services), and international applicants need a TOEFL score of 100, internet-based only, no more than two years old at the time of application. North Carolina substantially subsidizes tuition for students whose permanent legal residence is in the state. The state's Residency Determination Service decides who counts as a resident, and you may qualify as a resident for tuition purposes if you have established and maintained legal residence in North Carolina for at least 12 consecutive months before claiming it; UNC's catalog lists
the residency application among the supplemental materials for in-state applicants. UNC's DDS pages don't say whether residency affects admission. UNC says its admissions office is small and has "limited availability to counsel applicants about their admissions potential or provide application feedback during the application cycle." Its email is ddsadmissions@unc.edu. The UNC Interview: What UNC Says UNC publishes little about its DDS interview and says more details come with the invitation. Here is what its admissions page and its 2026–2027 catalog say: By invitation only, September to November. "Interviews occur on an invitation-only basis between September and November," and UNC notifies the applicants it selects "on a rolling basis between September and November." In person, as planned for 2026–27. "We are planning on conducting in-person interviews for the 2026-2027 admissions cycle. More details about our interview process will be
included in our interview invitations." A series of interviews at the school. UNC's catalog says "selected applicants are invited to the school for a series of personal interviews with our Admissions Committee." It doesn't say how many interviews there are, how long each lasts, or how many committee members you meet. What it counts toward. "An evaluation from the interview combined with the applicant's academic record, engagement in various activities, and performance on the DAT are the basis for the applicant's consideration for acceptance." Apply early. The catalog says "Applying at the end of the spring semester is encouraged to facilitate early consideration for an interview by the admissions committee." UNC's admissions page also quotes a graduate, Mylan Young, DDS 2023: "it was my interview day that solidified it for me. At my interview, the faculty and upperclassmen were so welcoming — I could feel that they sincerely wanted us
to be there." That describes an earlier cycle's interview day. What applicants report These are posts on a public applicant forum, and that forum's invite tracker, which a volunteer compiles from applicants' comments and private messages. They are not UNC's words: Invitations before September. On 1 August 2025, one out-of-state applicant posted an invitation received by email that day, for an in-person interview. The tracker lists UNC's first reported invitations as 1 August in 2025–26 and 21 July in 2026–27, with first interview dates of 6 September 2025 and 5 September 2026, in person. UNC's own page says it notifies selected applicants between September and November. We publish both; we can't tell you which will apply to you. One date, and the last one. An in-state applicant invited on 13 October 2025 listed 1 November as the date available, in person, and wrote that the email called it UNC's "last interview day for the cycle." Asked
on 18 October 2025 whether there were other November dates, the same applicant replied that the only option was the date in the invitation, "as far as I know." The night before. One applicant wrote on 6 September 2025 that UNC has "an optional pizza social night the day before the interview day" for interviewees. Decisions. The applicant invited for 1 November posted on 15 December 2025 that they had been accepted by email at 10 a.m. Another applicant posted on 16 December 2025 that they had been rejected without an interview. This cycle (2026–27). As of 6 October 2026, no applicant had posted an invitation in the forum's 2026–27 UNC thread; the tracker's 2026–27 dates above rest on comments and private messages we can't see. What UNC doesn't publish. How many interviews make up the series, how long each lasts, who you meet besides members of the Admissions Committee, whether your interviewers have read your application, the day's
schedule, and what is asked. Even the "Interview Process" item on UNC's student recruitment page says only "What to expect, how to prepare, and tips for making a strong impression." Read your invitation closely: UNC says more details come with it. Practice Your UNC Answers Out Loud. Deadline for AADSAS and the supplemental application, on UNC's admissions page (passed); UNC's catalog gives November 1 and November 15. December 2026. First offers of admission; acceptance packets are mailed with details of the $500 non-refundable deposit. By the end of March 2027. All applicants should have received a status update. By July 15, 2027. All course and degree requirements completed, for fall 2027 entry (UNC's FAQ says prerequisites “before July 15, 2027”). Offers continue on a rolling basis: UNC notifies admitted applicants "beginning in December and on a rolling basis thereafter," and its catalog says offers follow ADEA's Acceptance Notification Date Guidelines and "continue on a rolling basis until the
class is full." Acceptance is provisional on further requirements, including background checks, and the $500 deposit is credited to your tuition and fees when you register. October 1 or November 1?. UNC's DDS admissions page says "Our application deadline is October 1, 2026" and that you "must also complete our supplemental application by this deadline." UNC's 2026–2027 academic catalog says "The AADSAS application deadline is November 1 and the UNC D.D.S. Supplemental application deadline is November 15." The admissions page names this cycle's date and is the stricter of the two, so treat October 1, 2026 as the deadline: it has passed. If you haven't applied and are counting on the catalog's dates, ask ddsadmissions@unc.edu first. Planning for the next cycle? UNC's admissions page gives only 2026–27 dates so far. Its admissions office can generally give feedback on an application from March through early May, as availability allows,
and its catalog says advising meetings "must occur outside of the active application cycle for which the prospective student is applying." UNC offers guided tours, hosted by its Barakat Student Ambassadors, and presentations by its Assistant Dean of Student Recruitment at least once per semester, and runs live Virtual Dentistry: Shadowing events. What UNC Looks For UNC's catalog lists five things "The school expects applicants to demonstrate." Each can anchor an interview answer: Academic ability , shown by completing the prerequisites and the DAT "at an acceptable level of performance." Be ready to explain a weak grade and what you changed. Psychomotor ability , shown by an acceptable performance on the DAT's perceptual ability exam and "participation in hobbies and other experiences that require psychomotor activity outside of the normal college curriculum." Have a hand skill you can describe: how you learned it and how you got
better. A service commitment and a desire to help others , "evidenced by participation in extracurricular and volunteer activities that require interaction with others." UNC adds that "A caring attitude is considered central to the practice of dentistry." Tell one story about one person you helped. The potential to be a self-directed, lifelong learner. "Extracurricular experiences that indicate a high level of independent, intellectual curiosity are favored." Have an example of something you learned because you wanted to. Knowledge of the dental profession , from "talking with and observing dentists and reading appropriate dental literature." UNC expects "a firm grasp of what the dental profession is and what important issues are facing the profession," so have one issue you can discuss. The catalog also says: "Prospective students should demonstrate the ability to function as both a leader and a productive team member"; "Experiences
working in diverse communities or with diverse groups of people is suggested"; and "No school, including ours, wants to train prospective dentists who lack either the highest ethical standards or a sense of social responsibility." The best Why UNC material is in its curriculum and its service. UNC's Advocate-Clinician-Thinker (ACT) curriculum puts students in the clinic early: starting in the spring of the first year, they join assigned practice groups, working alongside upper-level classmates in patient care, and by summer they receive their first primary provider-patient assignment. Its clinic model has "two main practices housing three vertically integrated offices," each led by faculty preceptors. The curriculum includes a four-week Dentistry in Service to Community (DISC) rotation between the third and fourth years, at sites such as Federally Qualified Health Centers, local health departments, prisons and a Veterans Affairs
hospital; DISC currently serves 59 of North Carolina's 100 counties. The school also has seven student outreach clinics, the AROWS program for students interested in caring for underserved North Carolinians, and a five-year DDS-MBA with the Kenan-Flagler Business School. Connect one of these to the dentist you want to become. The practice questions below are ours, built on these criteria. UNC does not publish its interview questions. Internationally trained dentist? UNC does not publish its interview questions; these are practice questions built on the selection factors in its catalog. UNC doesn t say whether its interviewers have read your application so build a 90-second answer that works either who you are the experiences that led you to dentistry and why UNC is your next step. Why dentistry? UNC expects applicants to “demonstrate knowledge of the dental profession ” says such knowledge “can be obtained from talking with and observing dentists and reading appropriate dental literature ” and recommends exploring the field “with a strong emphasis on the practice of general
dentistry.” Anchor your answer in what you saw a general dentist do then say what it confirmed for you. What is an important issue facing the dental profession today? UNC s catalog expects applicants “to have a firm grasp of what the dental profession is and what important issues are facing the profession.” Pick one issue you have read about explain it in a sentence or two give your view and say how it affects patients. Why UNC? Use what UNC says about its the Advocate-Clinician-Thinker curriculum assigned practice groups with upper-level classmates from the spring of the first year a four-week DISC rotation in underserved North Carolina communities and seven student outreach clinics. Connect one of them to how you want to learn and whom you want to serve; praise for the name is not a reason. Behavioral Tell me about a time you helped someone through a hard moment. UNC says “A caring attitude is considered central to the practice of
dentistry ” and looks for “volunteer activities that require interaction with others.” Tell one story about one what you noticed what you did and what changed. Describe a time you led a group and a time you supported someone else s lead. UNC s catalog says prospective students “should demonstrate the ability to function as both a leader and a productive team member.” Have a short example of each and say what you learned from the one that went less well. What do you do with your hands outside of class? UNC looks for “participation in hobbies and other experiences that require psychomotor activity outside of the normal college curriculum.” Name the skill how you learned it and how you practiced to get better. Tell me about something you learned on your own. UNC favors “Extracurricular experiences that indicate a high level of independent intellectual curiosity” and looks for the potential to be “a self-directed lifelong learner.” Say what
sparked your interest how you went about learning it and what you did with it. Ethical / Scenario A patient at a community clinic can t afford the treatment you recommend. What do you do? UNC s students rotate through underserved North Carolina communities on DISC and its catalog asks for “a sense of social responsibility.” Acknowledge the patient without judgment explore legitimate options such as phased treatment or a community clinic and never lower the standard of care. You see a classmate cheating on an exam. What do you do? UNC s catalog says “Good moral character is an important prerequisite for entering the dental profession ” and that no school wants to train dentists who lack “the highest ethical standards.” Describe an escalation path from a direct conversation to the proper channels and say why integrity matters when patients trust your license. A patient refuses the treatment you recommend. How do you respond? UNC s catalog
says patients “are involved in the planning of their care ” and that students must give them “the information needed so they make informed decisions about their treatment.” Explain clearly find out what worries them offer alternatives and respect their decision. Read your invitation closely UNC says “More details about our interview process will be included in our interview invitations ” and it plans in-person interviews for 2026–27. Its catalog describes “a series of personal interviews with our Admissions Committee” at the school. Note everything the invitation tells you about the day and plan to be there in person. Bring evidence for each of UNC s five selection factors UNC s catalog expects applicants to show academic ability psychomotor ability a service commitment with a caring attitude the potential to be a self-directed lifelong learner and knowledge of the dental profession. Prepare one specific example for each including a
hand skill you have built outside class. Know general dentistry and the issues it faces UNC recommends exploring dentistry “with a strong emphasis on the practice of general dentistry” and says “Multiple long-term experiences are valued more highly than short-term interactions.” It also expects “a firm grasp of what the dental profession is and what important issues are facing the profession ” so be ready to discuss one issue in depth. Missed October 1? Use the off-season UNC s catalog says advising meetings with its admissions office “must occur outside of the active application cycle for which the prospective student is applying ” and it encourages applying at the end of the spring semester for early interview consideration. UNC also offers guided tours and live Virtual Shadowing events and it encourages online dental continuing education with any certificates of completion included in your application. applicants are invited to the school for a series of personal interviews with our Admissions Committee.” Its DDS admissions page says interviews are by invitation only between September and November that UNC plans to hold them in person for 2026–27 and that “More details about our interview process will be included in our interview invitations.” UNC doesn t publish how many interviews there are how long they last whether interviewers have read your file or what is asked. Is the UNC DDS interview in person or virtual? In person as UNC says “We are planning on conducting in-person interviews for the 2026-2027 admissions cycle ” and its catalog says selected applicants are “invited to the school.” On a public applicant forum two applicants invited on 1 August and 13 October 2025 listed their interviews as in person. When does UNC send interview invitations? UNC says it notifies the applicants it selects “on a rolling basis between
September and November ” and that interviews occur between September and November. Some applicant reports are on a public forum one applicant posted an invitation on 1 August 2025 and the forum s invite tracker (compiled by a volunteer from applicants reports) lists UNC s first reported invitations as 1 August in 2025–26 and 21 July in 2026–27. Another applicant invited on 13 October 2025 wrote that the email called 1 November UNC s last interview day of the cycle. When does UNC send acceptances? UNC extends its first offers of admission in December and notifies admitted applicants “beginning in December and on a rolling basis thereafter”; all applicants should receive a status update by the end of March. Acceptance packets are mailed with details of the $500 non-refundable deposit. On a public applicant forum one applicant posted on 15 December 2025 that they had been accepted by email at 10 a.m. Does UNC require CASPer or Kira for
dental school? UNC s DDS admissions pages and its 2026–2027 catalog don t mention CASPer Acuity Insights Kira or any similar assessment. What they ask for is AADSAS with transcripts three letters and official DAT scores; UNC s supplemental application with an $84 fee and a passport-style photo; and if you are invited an interview. What GPA and DAT do I need for UNC dental school? UNC says it has no GPA or DAT minimum but prefers an overall GPA of at least 3.2 and a DAT Academic Average of 420 on the 200–600 scale the DAT has used since 1 March 2025. Its most recently admitted class averaged a 3.72 GPA and a 460 Academic Average. UNC prints no old-scale (1–30) figures so if your score is on the old scale ask ddsadmissions@unc.edu how UNC reads it. Can I still apply to UNC for the 2026–27 cycle? UNC s DDS admissions page set October 1 2026 as the deadline for AADSAS and its supplemental application so it has passed. UNC s 2026–2027
catalog gives November 1 for AADSAS and November 15 for the supplemental application; the admissions page names this cycle s date and is the stricter of the two so ask ddsadmissions@unc.edu before counting on the catalog s dates. UNC s admissions page doesn t yet give dates for the next cycle. Does UNC give preference to North Carolina residents? UNC s DDS pages don t say. They explain residency for North Carolina s Residency Determination Service decides it and you may qualify if you have established and maintained legal residence in the state for at least 12 consecutive months before claiming it. UNC s catalog says its DDS admissions process is dedicated to selecting and enrolling students “to study dentistry and to provide qualified dental practitioners to the State of North Carolina and beyond.” ECU Dental School Interview Guide (DMD) In Greenville North by invitation an interview with members of ECU s Admissions Committee; ECU
